Predicting the duration of chaotic transients in excitable media
AbstractThe spatiotemporal dynamics of excitable media may exhibit chaotic transients. We investigate this transient chaos in the 2D Fenton–Karma model describing the propagation of electrical excitation waves in cardiac tissue and compute the average duration of chaotic transients in dependence on model parameter values. Furthermore, other characteristics like the dominant frequency, the size of the excitable gap, pseudo ECGs, the number of phase singularities and parameters characterizing the action potential duration restitution curve are determined and it is shown that these quantities can be used to predict the average transient time using polynomial regression.Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschafthttps://doi.org/10.13039/501100001659German Center for Cardiovascular Researc
Raymond Aron on human rights: a potential contribution to the debate between Claude Lefort, Marcel Gauchet, and Pierre Manent
I will present some of Raymond Aron’s texts as a contribution to the debate on human rights between Claude Lefort, Marcel Gauchet, and Pierre Manent (three authors who have an intellectual dialogue with Aron). On one hand, Aron will be presented as a source of inspiration for Gauchet’s and Manent’s critique of the “politics of human rights”. The core of this critique consists in the effort to think together the points of view of power and law, in contrast with the dissociation between power and law seen by Lefort in the modern democratic revolution. On the other hand, I will argue that Aron comes close to Lefort, and distances himself from Gauchet and Manent, by his refusal to assimilate human rights to an individualistic philosophy. Both Aron and Lefort emphasize the critical dimension of human rights: they express a critique of modern society in the name of the ideals of that same society.
Success rates of simulated multi-pulse defibrillation protocols are sensitive to application timing with individual, protocol-specific optimal timings
Ventricular fibrillation is a lethal condition where the heartbeat becomes too disorganised to maintain proper circulation. It is treated with defibrillation, which applies an electric shock in an attempt to reset the heart rhythm. As the high energy of this shock risks long-term harm to the patient, means of reducing it without compromising treatment efficacy are of great interest. One approach to maintaining efficacy is to improve the success rate of such low-energy shocks (i.e., pulses) through the proper timing of their application as defibrillation protocols, which consist of one or more pulses with predetermined inter-pulse periods. In practice, however, the effects of application timing remain to be tested for any of the multi-pulse protocols proposed in literature. We use (de)fibrillation simulations to show that such timing matters: The success rate of single-pulse protocols can vary by as much as 80 percentage points depending on timing, and using more shocks in succession only lessens this sensitivity up to a point. We also present evidence that feedback-based defibrillation on a shock-by-shock basis may be the only practical means of using timing to increase treatment efficacy, as we also generally find any optimal application timings to be specific to each combination of protocol and fibrillation episode
Optimising low-energy defibrillation in 2D cardiac tissue with a genetic algorithm
Sequences of low-energy electrical pulses can effectively terminate ventricular fibrillation (VF) and avoid the side effects of conventional high-energy electrical defibrillation shocks, including tissue damage, traumatic pain, and worsening of prognosis. However, the systematic optimisation of sequences of low-energy pulses remains a major challenge. Using 2D simulations of homogeneous cardiac tissue and a genetic algorithm, we demonstrate the optimisation of sequences with non-uniform pulse energies and time intervals between consecutive pulses for efficient VF termination. We further identify model-dependent reductions of total pacing energy ranging from ∼4% to ∼80% compared to reference adaptive-deceleration pacing (ADP) protocols of equal success rate (100%)
Raymond posthumous work provides an excellent occasion to recapitulate and reevaluate his essential theses in the field of international relations. Twenty years after the publication of Peace and war among nations, R. Aron is led to wonder if the interstate system on which he had concentrated was the most representative and significant element of international relations. Although he does not go as far as to give up his initial postulate, he seems much more favorable than in the past to considering new factors and new actors. The road thus seems open to an approach which would try to comprehend all aspects of international society. But this change of perspective goes back, in the end to Aron's basic intuition : it is in the space left between the two terms of the famous phrase "war improbable peace impossible" that changes of all types occur, of which the international system is both the arena and the stakes.L'ouvrage posthume de R. CAPRI versus AGLINK-COSIMO: Two partial equilibrium models - Two baseline approaches
The agricultural modelling world has generated several models aiming at the analysis of the response of the sector to certain changes in exogenous mainly policy variables. Among those, the CAPRI modelling system developed by a consortium centred on the University of Bonn and the AGLINK-COSIMO model, a joint product of the OECD and the FAO, are well known and accepted as comprehensive tools. This analysis focuses on a qualitative comparison of both models and particularly on the process of setting up the baseline. The baseline is a medium-term projection of agricultural markets reflecting current policies and those already decided upon. This projection in turn serves as the base for comparisons when analyzing scenarios. It is shown that CAPRI uses generic and automatic procedures whenever possible for conducting the database and the baseline, while AGLINK-COSIMO puts more emphasis on expert knowledge in this process. Both approaches are shown to have certain advantages while the conclusion that a combination of them would potentially improve both models will be drawn from this analysis.CAPRI, AGLINK-COSIMO, Baseline process, Agricultural and Food Policy,
