On my path to become a physicist I must finalise my bachelor studies with a thesis. In the course of this, I am free to choose the topic of my specialisation. Since applied physics and especially large scale research facilities have always raised my interest, I have decided to concentrate on the most fitting research facility in Berlin-Adlershof: the electron storage ring BESSY II. After talking to Prof. Andreas Jankowiak he agreed to support my bachelor studies on the BESSY II injector system and especially the booster synchrotron. Then Dr. Peter Kuske supervised my studies on the energy fluctuations of the injector linac, the phase acceptance of the synchrotron and the beam oscillations in the booster

We must combine conservation of nature with benefits to society. Interview by Gaby Allheilig with Andreas Heinimann on IPBES' Global Assessment Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services

    No full text
On 6 May 2019, the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) presented its report on the state of biodiversity and ecosystem services worldwide. The first such assessment since 2005, it concludes that biodiversity and ecosystem loss has reached the point where it threatens human well-being. The researchers involved recommend several urgent measures to political decision-makers. Andreas Heinimann of CDE was the one Swiss scientist who worked as a lead author on a chapter of the report

Family Virtues and Social Critique: Andreas Latzko’s Anti-War Prose (1917-1918)

    No full text
Between 1917 and 1918, the Austro-Hungarian author Andreas Latzko (1876-1943) wrote three separate publications against the Great War: Menschen im Krieg (1917), Friedensgericht (1918), and Der letzte Mann (published 1919). Literary historians tend to bypass these works, and the few who note them chiefly focus on the best-selling novella cycle Menschen im Krieg (1917). It is usually presented as an example of expressionist political prose, or as a mixture of social satire and aesthetic shock-tactics that chiefly remains indebted to realist traditions, albeit with occasional incursions into expressionistic styles..

How fear of crime affects punitive attitudes

    No full text
This article investigates different types of fear of crime as predictors for punitive attitudes. Using data from a Germany-wide representative survey (n = 1272) it examines the reliability and validity of survey instruments through confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and uses structural equation modeling (SEM) to explain variations in the level of respondents’ punitive attitudes. The results show that different emotional and cognitive responses to crime have a distinctive effect on the formation of punitive attitudes. These effects vary significantly depending on socio-demographic factors and assumed purposes of punishment. A crucial observation of the study is that men’s fear of crime works in a different way in the formation of punitive attitudes than women’s fear of crime. The perceived locus of control for the crimethreat is a possible explanation for this difference

Jihadi violence. A study of al-Qaeda's media

    No full text
Many speculations revolve around the political goals of Islamists and jihadists. What is it that al-Qaeda think they can achieve through political violence? This book provides clear answers to this and other important questions. Based on the systematic analysis of claims of responsibilities and video messages of al-Qaeda leaders, it opens intriguing insights into the world view and mindset of the jihadi movement. Thereby it enables the reader to gain a clearer picture of the political-religious program of Islamism and to better distinguish between its radical and moderate political claims. This knowledge is important because political Islam and jihadi violence not only is an increasingly important topic in domestic politics, but also became, through the Arab Spring, a tangible factor in foreign affairs. In al-Qaeda’s ideology theological and political arguments are blended into a coherent media strategy. Political claims and grievances are convincingly backed up by quasi-journalistic evidence, whereas theological arguments are complemented by legal references to the Quran and Sunna. In addition, the jihadi leaders provide doctrines and strategies describing how the use of force can defend Islam against its perceived three existential threats – the global conflict, Arab despotism and secular governance. Theological and strategic considerations converge in al-Qaeda’s rationale for violence
