Nutritional value and prediction of digestible and metabolizable energy of full-fat deactivated soybeans for pigs
Objective The objective of this work was to determine the energetic values of 14 full-fat deactivated soybeans samples, the effect of partial removal of the hull, and to develop equations for predicting digestible (DE), metabolizable (ME), and ME corrected for nitrogen balance (MEn) for pigs. Methods Ten metabolism experiments were conducted over a two-year period to evaluate 14 batches of full-fat deactivated soybeans, following the method of the total collection of feces and urine. One hundred and ninety-two pigs with an average initial body weight of 51.4±5.4 kg were assigned to dietary treatments. Results Partial dehulling of soybeans did not affect DE, ME, and MEn values. The variables that best explained the variations (p<0.05) in DE were ureatic activity (UA) and crude fiber. The variables that showed the greatest association (p<0.05) with ME and MEn were UA, protein solubility, and processing pressure. The observed effect of UA on energy values was quadratic (p<0.05). Phosphorus also showed association (p<0.05) with DE and ME and the energy applied per kg of sample showed association (p<0.05) with ME and MEn. Conclusion The overall mean values of DE, ME, and MEn were 4,558, 4,457, and 4,344 kcal/kg, respectively. The partial removal of the hull prior to soy deactivation did not affect the digestibility or the energy values. This study shows that the processing conditions are the main factors affecting the energetic value of full-fat deactivated soybeans for pigs, which can be accurately predicted using a combination of chemical composition, quality indicators, and processing parameters

Swine carcasses classified by degree of exudation and marbling content.
The objective of this work was to develop and evaluate prediction equations, based on measurements obtained on the slaughter line, for carcass classification according to the degree of exudation and the content of marbling. A total of 747 pig carcasses originated from 27 producers were randomly selected on the slaughter line at two slaughterhouses, constituting representative samples from each one. Hot carcass weight, loin depth, back fat thickness, and pH and temperature 45 min after slaughter were used to generate the equations. The carcasses were classified as normal or exudative for drip loss of loin and ham, and as acceptable or undesirable for marbling content. For drip loss of loin and ham, respectively, the overall correct classification of the carcasses was 87.3 and 76.8%, using the discriminant functions, for both categories. For marbling, the overall correct classification was 67.2%, and only 69% of the carcasses were correctly classified as acceptable (marbling >1). The equations developed based on the measurements obtained on the slaughter line allow classifying swine carcasses with high accuracy, according to the degree of exudation, but not with the content of marbling
Efficient products in the disinfection that do not cause damages to the environment are a challenge for the organic poultry keeping. The antibacterial activity of four disinfectants was evaluated to per acetic acid, quaternary ammonium, sodium hypochlorite at 1% and 0,1% and the composed of organics acids (citric, lactic and ascorbic) against standard samples of Escherichia coli, Salmonella enteritidis and Staphylococcus aureus in the presence and absence of organic matter, at two different temperatures and with 20 minutes of contact. Organic acids were shown less effective in the presence of organic matter. However, the per acetic acid in the absence of this revealed most efficient against S. Enteritidis and equally effective in the presence of organic matter, against S. aureus and E. coli showing a valid option for disinfection in the organic poultry keeping since preceded of careful cleanness
Somatic cells count and milk yield in confined holstein cows.
The objective of the present study was to evaluate whether milk yield losses due to increasing in milk somatic cells count (SCC) are proportional to milk yield (dependent of it), or absolute (independent of it). Also, it was investigated starting from which value of SCC the losses become evident. To achieve the objective of this research, two studies were done. In the first one, 7,756 observations were used, collected monthly from a single herd, from September/2000 up to June/2002, while in the second one, 13,725 observations were used, collected monthly from 6 herds, from January/2001 up to June/2002. In both cases, the analysis model for lactation curve was based upon the incomplete gamma function; in the first study the effects of lactation order, calving season, peripartum disorder incidence and body condition score at calving were considered, and in the second one, the effects of lactation order, calving season and herd were added. Somatic cells count entered in that model in two ways: as multiplicative factor (representing relative losses) and as additive factor (representing absolute losses). The best model was chosen based on the information criteria of Schwarz (BIC). In both studies, it was concluded that losses are absolute and just vary with the lactation order (primiparous and multiparous cows). In the first case, losses become evident starting from 14,270 cells/mL, and for each unitary increase in the natural logarithm scale from that value, there are losses of 184 and 869 g/day for primiparous and multiparous cows, respectively. In the second study, it was estimated that losses start from 17,000 cells/mL and are of 238 and 868 g/day for primiparous and multiparous cows, respectively, for each unitary increase in the natural logarithm scale from that value
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
