    The Relation between Treated Maternal Urinary Tract Infection and Adverse Maternal, Prenatal Outcomes in Pregnant Women of Ardabil, Iran

    Background and Objective: ­ Urinary tract infection is one of the most common bacterial infections during pregnancy and has also been implicated as a risk factor for adverse maternal and prenatal ­­outcomes. The aim of our study was to determine the relation between maternal urinary tract infection and adverse maternal, prenatal outcomes in pregnant women of Ardabil, Iran. Material and Methods: ­ This retrospective-case-control study was conducted on­ prenatal file records of pregnant women in Ardabil (2011). ­ ­The pregnant women ­who had a positive urine culture in their prenatal files­ (N= 211) ­were considered as a case ­group and ­232­ ones without urinary tract infection as a control. Using a research- made questionnaire, the data related to present pregnancy and prenatal information was collected and analyzed by KrusKal Wallis, Chi- Square and Fisher statistical tests. Results­: Maternal age of under 25 (%61.6 vs. 56.5), body mass index of more than 30 (%18.3 vs. 15.6), primigravida (%55 vs. 48.8), hypertension (%2.4 vs. 1.3), hyperemesis Gravidarum (%14.8 vs. 12.6), frequency ­and dysuria ­(%1.9 vs. 0.9), low birth weight (%95.4 vs. 93.2), congenital malformation (%3.5 vs. 1.8), artificial milk feeding (%6.5 vs. 2.7), neonatal death (%0.9 vs. 0.0) are higher in urinary infection group, however the differences are not statistically significant. Other maternal and prenatal adverse outcomes such as diabetes, pre-eclampsia , hemoglobin level, prematurity, abortion and stillbirth have not significant relation with urinary infection. Conclusion: Because of low level of adverse maternal or prenatal outcomes reported in our study, we conclude that screening and treatment of urinary tract infection in Ardabil health service is ­appropriate; therefore, ­no change is needed for present ­screening­ or treatment processes

    Contaminant back-diffusion from low-permeability layers as affected by groundwater velocity: A laboratory investigation by box model and image analysis

    Low-permeability lenses represent potential sources of long-term release when filled from contaminant solute through direct contact with dissolved plumes. The redistribution of contaminant from low to high permeability aquifer zones (Back-Diffusion) was studied. Redistribution causes a long plume tail, commonly regarded as one of the main obstacles to effective groundwater remediation. Laboratory tests were performed to reproduce the redistribution process and to investigate the effect of pumping water on the remediation time of these contaminated low-permeability lenses. The test section used is representative of clay/silt lenses (k ≈ 1 ∗ 10− 10 m/s/k ≈ 1 ∗ 10− 7 m/s) in a sand aquifer (k ≈ 1 ∗ 10− 3 m/s). Hence, an image analysis procedure was used to estimate the diffusive flux of contaminant released by these low-permeability zones. The proposed technique was validated performing a mass balance of a lens saturated by a known quantity of tracer. For each test, performed using a different groundwater velocity, the diffusive fluxes of contaminant released by lenses were compared and the remediation times of the low-permeability zones calculated. For each lens, the obtained remediation timeframes were used to define an analytical relation vs groundwater velocity and the coefficients of these relations were matched to grain size of the low-permeability lenses. Results show that an increase of the velocity field is not useful to diminish the total depletion times as the process mainly diffusive. This is significant when the remediation approach relies on pumping technology

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Umbrella Review of Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses on Consumption of Different Food Groups and Risk of All-cause Mortality

    Consumption of different food groups is linked to a range of health outcomes. It is essential to integrate the most reliable evidence regarding intake of different food groups and risk of mortality to optimize dietary guidance. Our aim is to systematically and comprehensively assess the associations between the consumption of various food groups and all-cause mortality. The food groups under consideration include edible grains (refined and whole grains), fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, fish and fish products, eggs, dairy products/milk, meat and meat products (including processed meat, unprocessed red and white meat), sugar-sweetened beverages, and added sugars. We present these associations with high compared with low consumption and per serving comparisons. We comprehensively and systematically reviewed a search in Medline, Embase, Web of Science, and Epistemonikos (PROSPERO: CRD42024498035), identifying 41 meta-analyses involving over a million participants, many of which showed significant heterogeneity. Of the 41 studies, 18 were rated high quality, 8 moderate quality, 5 low quality, and 10 critically low quality according to AMSTAR-2 assessments. Our findings revealed that higher consumption of nuts, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and fish was associated with lower mortality rates, both in high compared with low comparisons and per serving analyses. Similarly, we observed favorable outcomes for legumes and white meat in high compared with low comparisons. Conversely, high intakes of red and processed meats, as well as sugar-sweetened beverages, were linked to higher all-cause mortality. Dairy products and refined grains did not show clear associations with mortality, whereas there was a tendency in all-cause mortality for high intakes of added sugars and eggs

    Simulation of thermal plant optimization and hydraulic aspects of thermal distribution loops for large campuses

    Following an introduction, the author describes Texas A&M University and its utilities system. After that, the author presents how to construct simulation models for chilled water and heating hot water distribution systems. The simulation model was used in a $2.3 million Ross Street chilled water pipe replacement project at Texas A&M University. A second project conducted at the University of Texas at San Antonio was used as an example to demonstrate how to identify and design an optimal distribution system by using a simulation model. The author found that the minor losses of these closed loop thermal distribution systems are significantly higher than potable water distribution systems. In the second part of the report, the author presents the latest development of software called the Plant Optimization Program, which can simulate cogeneration plant operation, estimate its operation cost and provide optimized operation suggestions. The author also developed detailed simulation models for a gas turbine and heat recovery steam generator and identified significant potential savings. Finally, the author also used a steam turbine as an example to present a multi-regression method on constructing simulation models by using basic statistics and optimization algorithms. This report presents a survey of the author??s working experience at the Energy Systems Laboratory (ESL) at Texas A&M University during the period of January 2002 through March 2004. The purpose of the above work was to allow the author to become familiar with the practice of engineering. The result is that the author knows how to complete a project from start to finish and understands how both technical and nontechnical aspects of a project need to be considered in order to ensure a quality deliverable and bring a project to successful completion. This report concludes that the objectives of the internship were successfully accomplished and that the requirements for the degree of Degree of Engineering have been satisfied
