Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Interrelationship of biomass yield, carbon input, aggregation, carbon pools and its sequestration in Vertisols under long-term sorghum-wheat cropping system in semi-arid tropics
Not AvailableWe investigated dynamics of soil organic carbon (SOC) i.e. total soil organic carbon (TOC), oxidisable organic carbon (OC) and its different pools viz. very labile (CVL), labile (CL), less labile (CLL) and non-labile (CNL), and various sized aggregate associated carbon (AAC) and also its sequestration along depth (0-0.15, 0.15-0.30, and 0.30 -0.45m) in a typical Vertisols under hot semi-arid agro-climatic conditions. Such dynamics were studied under different soil management practices viz., control, NPK (100% recommended doses of N, P and K fertilizers, RDF), NPK+FYM (50% N and whole of the RDF and 50% N through FYM) and fallow using a 28year old long-term experiment with sorghum (Sorghum bicolour L.) wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cropping system. On average, a higher proportion (70% of TOC) of SOC was found in passive pool (less labile+non labile) than active one (very labile+labile) throughout the profile. The proportion of active pool was, however, higher under balanced (NPK) and integrated nutrient management practices (NPK+FYM) over the others followed. Long-term intensive cropping with NPK (15.1%) and NPK+FYM (22%) caused a net enrichment in SOC stock over the control. To offset the loss of C and maintain the SOC level, a critical amount of 0.96Mg C ha1yr1 was needed to be incorporated into the soil. Out of the total water stable aggregates (WSA), mesoaggregates (0.252.0mm) predominated (73.6%) followed by micro (16.4%), and macroaggregates (10.7%) at surface soil. Amount of carbon associated with different sized aggregates had the following trend: mesoaggregate (52.3%) > coarse microaggregate (13.7%)> coarse macroaggregate (13.5%)> (silt+clay) sized aggregate (13.1%)> fine microaggregate (12.2%). Balanced fertilization with organics thus provided not only higher yield but also increased C sequestration in Vertisols even with intensive cropping of sorghum-wheat system under hot semi-arid conditions

Not AvailableFarmers mostly prefer mineral gypsum as reclamation ameliorant for sodic soils. Timely availability of quality product many a times hampers the pace of reclamation process impairing crops productivity to a greater extent. To measure the reclamative efficiency of pressmud in sodic ecosystems dominating rice (Oryza sativa L.) - wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)system, a total of 37 farmers participatory trials were carried out in Kaithal district of Haryana state. Soil incorporation of pressmud at 10 t/ha improved the plants adaptation through significant improvement in agro-physiological and biochemical parameters of crop response. Concomitant reduction in spikelets sterility (~21%) and chaffy grains per panicle (~17%) in rice under pressmud ameliorated plots imparted yield advantage to the tune of ~21% under sodic conditions. In wheat, pressmud application increased productive tillers per mrl (13%), spikelets per spike (8%), grains per earhead (10%) and 1000-grain weight (2%) elucidating ~14% yield gain compared to farmers managed plots. System productivity in terms of wheat equivalent yield improved by ~15% per cent due to pressmud application under a variable range of soil pH (7.18-8.65) and RSCiw (1.6-7.6 me / L). Pressmud incorporation resulted in reduction of Na saturation in soil-plant continum and neutralized soil alkalinity with consequent reduction in soil pH to the extent of 0.07-0.44 units with a mean value of 8.47 after crop harvest against initial value of 8.68. Amelioration of sodic soils through pressmud application showed economic benefits of ` 24779 / ha with incremental benefit-cost ratio of 5.04 for each rupee invested against the added cost of ` 4920 / ha. Field application of pressmud not only ensured the safe disposal of this waste byproduct but also helped in achieving the sustainable yields. Evidences from farmers participatory trials revealed that pressmud can serve as affordable alternative amendment to gypsum in sodic land reclamation programme. In nutshell, scientific diagnosis of field problems, strong farmers-scientist interface and participatory research could work as suitable and location specific adaptive strategies in arresting the salt induced land degradation and strengthening farmers livelihood
