Costs and benefits of debt and debt service reduction

    No full text
The author evaluates the costs and benefits of debt and debt service reduction (DDSR) from the point of view of five countries that have concluded Brady deals: Costa Rica, Mexico, the Philippines, Uruguay, and Venezuela. He concludes that, contrary to widely held views, commercial banks have probably benefited from the operations. Commercial bank participation in DDSR is voluntary, so direct financial savings to the country are probably negative at present values. The benefit from DDSR is not that debt is bought at"bargain prices"at the expense of commercial banks. It appears difficult to justify a DDSR operation on purely financial grounds. A more realistic way to look at a DDSR operation is to view it as a"project"that involves a certain financial cost. The return on such a project is how the DDSR operation improves the macroeconomy, or contributes to development. The main purpose of DDSR is to establish a more efficient arrangement between debtor countries and commercial banks, leading to improved conditions for development. A DDSR operation that does not help development is costly and should not be undertaken. The impact of DDSR on development is usually measured by the increase in the growth rate of GDP, but it is too soon to measure that for these five countries. A suitable alternative is to look at the change in investment patterns. A strong policy framework is needed if debt and debt service reduction are to significantly improve development. In Mexico and, to a lesser extent, Venezuela, improved and sustained strong adjustment policies have generated the greatest development benefits. Gains have been less in smaller countries where policies were not as supportive. The author concludes that for a country to benefit from DDSR, it needs significant indirect benefits (such as increased domestic and foreign savings). Direct benefits are likely to be negative because of the commercial banks'financial gains and because DDSR operations are frontloaded. DDSR operations cannot be justified solely by direct benefits and savings in cash flow.Strategic Debt Management,Banks&Banking Reform,Economic Theory&Research,Environmental Economics&Policies,Financial Intermediation

Complete multicomponent versus mixture-averaged calculations of a laminar H2/N2 diffusion flame including heat transfer at the burner and Soret effects

    No full text
The implementation of full multicomponent treatment of diffusion fluxes in the CFD solver for laminar reacting flows with detailed kinetic mechanisms laminarSMOKE++ is presented. The optimised 1+M multicomponent formulation (including Fick diffusion and Soret effects) derived from the Kinetic Theory of Gases, with a similar computational cost as mixture-averaged, is considered. Results are presented for a H2/N2 laminar coflow diffusion flame, where either heat transfer at the burner wall is included, either the wall is considered adiabatic. We observe that full multicomponent and mixture-averaged results are very similar when Soret effects are neglected. However, differences are observed when including thermodiffusion. In particular with heat transfer at the wall, large differences are observed whether thermodiffusion is neglected or included. In this case, the mixture-averaged approximation used for the thermal diffusion coefficients leads to significant differences in the results compared to the full multicomponent 1+M formulation

La finalidad de esta plataforma es didáctica para la puesta en práctica de los conceptos básicos de robótica, control y comunicacionesAbstract : Mobile robotics is a research field of great dynamic in recent decades, the increasing complexity of mobile robots, has created the need to distribute the robot control and processing load in modules with specific tasks, therefore, is required a flexible communication architecture for sharing information between the modules. In this work is described the development of distributed control for a mobile robotic platform, comprised of: an AHRS orientation module (Attitude and Heading Reference System), one for displaying information and one for motor control and odometry. For the comunication between this modules is used an abtraction layers comunication architecture. Client-Server model is used, with UDP/IP Sockets in the transport layer and Ethernet as the physical layer and medium access protocol. As control device into each module, accounts a MBED platform for fast prototyping, that uses the LPC1768 32 Bits microcontroller from the ARM Cortex-M family and a real time operating system (RTOS) for task administration. This platform has a didactic goal, for the training in the basic concepts of robotics, the control and communicationsMaestrí

Toward predicting tensile strength of pharmaceutical tablets by ultrasound measurement in continuous manufacturing

    No full text
An ultrasound measurement system was employed as a non-destructive method to evaluate its reliability in predicting the tensile strength of tablets and investigate the benefits of incorporating it in a continuous line, manufacturing solid dosage forms. Tablets containing lactose, acetaminophen, and magnesium stearate were manufactured continuously and in batches. The effect of two processing parameters, compaction force and level of shear strain were examined. Young's modulus and tensile strength of tablets were obtained by ultrasound and diametrical mechanical testing, respectively. It was found that as the blend was exposed to increasing levels of shear strain, the speed of sound in the tablets decreased and the tablets became both softer and mechanically weaker. Moreover, the results indicate that two separate tablet material properties (e.g., relative density and Young's modulus) are necessary in order to predict tensile strength. A strategy for hardness prediction is proposed that uses the existing models for Young's modulus and tensile strength of porous materials. Ultrasound testing was found to be very sensitive in differentiating tablets with similar formulation but produced under different processing conditions (e.g., different level of shear strain), thus, providing a fast, and non-destructive method for hardness prediction that could be incorporated to a continuous manufacturing process.Peer reviewe

    On partial isometries in C*-algebras

    No full text
We study similarity to partial isometries in C*-algebras as well as their relationship with generalized inverses. Most of the results extend some recent results regarding partial isometries on Hilbert spaces. Moreover, we describe partial isometries by means of interpolation polynomials.Fil: Arias, Maria Laura. This third chapter of the book "Descartes bibliográficos y de bibliofilia" by Prof. Pedro M. Cátedra is dedicated to Prof. Alberto Blecua. He studies a peculiar little Book of Hours of Seventeenth century Spain, written by a nine-year-old child, in an excellent calligraphy, which the principal poets of Madrid (Juan Ruiz de Alarcón, Pedro Calderón de la Bara, Lope de Vega, Luis Vélez de Guevara or Jerónimo de Villaizán) celebrate with some poetical compositions, 'décimas' or sonnets. It is suggested that the author could be one of the numerous bastards of Philip IV. It is studied also in the context of the changes of Spanish calligraphy in Seventeenth Century.
