Late Middle Ages and Renaissance: the forgotten contribution of Max Dvořák
Max Dvořák, one of the pilasters of the Viennese school of art history, is nowadays widely known for the works of his final years as well as for writings on monument conservation. Through a reconstruction of the historical and academic context and a brief presentation of Dvořák’s studies on the transition period from the fourteenth to the fifteenth century, the author aims to show that the Bohemian scholar made an important contribution to the art historical debate of the time, for which he is hardly appreciated today.
This article examines a selection of Dvořák’s early writings from the first decade of the twenthieth century. In particular, the habilitation thesis Das Rätsel der Kunst der Brüder van Eyck (The Enigma of the Art of the Van Eyck Brothers, 1903) is consulted. While many scholars claim that there is a wide gap between his older works and those from the last years of his life, as stated by his former students Karl M. Swoboda and Johannes Wilde in the preface to Kunstgeschichte als Geistesgeschichte (1924), it is argued here that Dvořák’s point of view already presents the basic elements of his more mature conclusions at the beginning of his academic career. Likewise, it is reflected on the fact that Dvořák made a remarkable contribution to a new consideration of the transitional period between the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance, among other workd, with his Enigma, but that this is today attributed not to him but to the cultural historian Johan Huizinga and his work Autumn of the Middle Ages (1919)
Defining a Discipline: «Kunstgeschichtliche Anzeigen» as a Critical Organ for the Vienna School
This article briefly presents the often mentioned, yet not deeper investigated journal 'Kunstgeschichtliche Anzeigen' (KA), founded by Franz Wickhoff in 1904. The primary driving force behind the project was his then assistant Max Dvořák, who continued the editorship after Wickhoff’s death in 1909 until 1913. On this occasion, the founding of the journal through the unpublished correspondence between the two, which gives insight into the journal’s objectives and purpose, is retraced. Particular attention is given to the involvement of scholars from other universities as well as to the KA’s aim to establish a definition of scientifically valid research in art history. In this context, an analysis of the Vienna School’s definition of Wissenschaftlichkeit (‘scientificity’) is a central part of the article. Finally, the author reflects on the journal’s legitimacy in the broader context of the institutionalisation of the discipline of art history

I examine where this connection is made by analyzing communication from various EU institutions, as well as EU or national politicians, and newspapers. I hypothesize that the EU is referring to European identity and the common European cultural heritage in crisis situations. After conducting discourse analysis, a connection between crises and European identity or common culture is made at various places and by various people. This thesis contributes to the field of European Union Studies, by looking at how the concept of European identity through cultural policy is utilized. It also makes a contribution to the field of Cultural studies by indicating how culture can be instrumentalized and how culture can transform social relations.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'Closed Access', the embargo will last until 2019-05-01The student, Raphaela Berding, accepted the attached license on 2017-04-13 at 17:11.The student, Raphaela Berding, submitted this Thesis for approval on 2017-04-13 at 17:11.This Thesis was approved for publication on 2017-04-17 at 09:39.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #10751 on 2017-08-10 at 14:30:3
Römische Fabeln auf Mühlviardlarisch
The Mühlviertel is an Austrian region belonging to the state of Upper Austria: it is one of four quarters of Upper Austria, the others being Hausruckviertel, Traunviertel, and Innviertel. It is named for the two rivers Große Mühl and Kleine Mühl. Here are Phaedrus' fables in this dialect, though the author challenges our normal understanding of the difference between language and dialect; this dialect is for him an independent language (6-7). This book with its illustration has helped me to understand Phaedrus V 9 for the first time (195): the bull went through this opening a long time ago, when he was smaller. He does not need the younger animal's advice about what he has already done many times over. The black-and-white illustrations are good, if simple. They are all sideways -- because landscape -- in a book that is in the traditional portrait frame. Among the best illustrations are those of the fox and owl and their young (57); the eagle, cat, and pig (74); the grasshopper and the owl (114); the fox and the goat (146). The cover's colored rendition of FG seems much livelier than the black-and-white (132). Does the fact that the vocabulary after each fable comes in a standardized table betray the computer-generated character of this book? This is a hardbound book (hard cover)Language note: German (Mühlviardlarisch)Leopold Pamme
Works of R. Edelbauer in Context of Contemporary Austrian Literature of Early 21st Century
This study explores the novels of contemporary Austrian writer Raphaela Edelbauer (Raphaela Edelbauer, b. 1990) “The Fluid Land” (Das flüssige Land, 2019), “DAVE” (DAVE, 2021), “The Incommensurables” (Die Inkommensurablen, 2023) in the context of contemporary Austrian literature of the early third millennium. The relevance of the research is driven by the necessity to comprehend the trends in Austrian literature during an era of global changes. It is revealed that, on one hand, the author continues the traditions of Austrian literature of the second half of the 20th century, particularly on a thematic level (Austrian identity, overcoming the past, the false idyll of provincial Austria, conflicts between fathers and children, etc.), while on the other hand, delving into pressing contemporary issues (transhumanism, artificial intelligence, etc.). The concept of fictionality is central to the analysis, exploring the ways and specifics of its implementation in the artistic text in alignment with the author’s communicative intentions. Special attention is given to Edelbauer’s individual style, the uniqueness of narrative organization in the examined genre varieties (parable novel, science fiction novel, historical novel), and the quest for a “personal” language. The novelty of this research lies in the fact that Edelbauer’s work, distinguished by prestigious literary awards in Austria and Germany, has not been a subject of study in Russian literary studies
Document Image Processing for Handwritten Text Recognition : Deep Learning-based Transliteration of Astrid Lindgren’s Stenographic Manuscripts
Document image processing and handwritten text recognition have been applied to a variety of materials, scripts, and languages, both modern and historic. They are crucial building blocks in the on-going digitisation efforts of archives, where they aid in preserving archival materials and foster knowledge sharing. The latter is especially facilitated by making document contents available to interested readers who may have little to no practice in, for example, reading a specific script type, and might therefore face challenges in accessing the material. The first part of this dissertation focuses on reducing editorial artefacts, specifically in the form of struck-through words, in manuscripts. The main goal of this process is to identify struck-through words and remove as much of the strikethrough artefacts as possible in order to regain access to the original word. This step can serve both as preprocessing, to aid human annotators and readers, as well as in computerised pipelines, such as handwritten text recognition. Two deep learning-based approaches, exploring paired and unpaired data settings, are examined and compared. Furthermore, an approach for generating synthetic strikethrough data, for example, for training and testing purposes, and three novel datasets are presented. The second part of this dissertation is centred around applying handwritten text recognition to the stenographic manuscripts of Swedish children's book author Astrid Lindgren (1907 - 2002). Manually transliterating stenography, also known as shorthand, requires special domain knowledge of the script itself. Therefore, the main focus of this part is to reduce the required manual work, aiming to increase the accessibility of the material. In this regard, a baseline for handwritten text recognition of Swedish stenography is established. Two approaches for improving upon this baseline are examined. Firstly, a variety of data augmentation techniques, commonly-used in handwritten text recognition, are studied. Secondly, different target sequence encoding methods, which aim to approximate diplomatic transcriptions, are investigated. The latter, in combination with a pre-training approach, significantly improves the recognition performance. In addition to the two presented studies, the novel LION dataset is published, consisting of excerpts from Astrid Lindgren's stenographic manuscripts.
Die Bedeutung des Employee Self Service für Mitarbeiterbindung
“Is it feasible to use flexible benefits as a possible employee retention tool? A survey about the possibilities of a value-oriented flexible benefits system as a method for innovative employee retention on the example of the organisation EVOMOTIV GmbH”
Being an engineering company, the current changes in the labour market caused by a lack of qualified experts, have had quite an effect on the employee retention of the organisation EVOMOTIV GmbH. Therefore the aim of this thesis is to develop a value-oriented flexible benefits system which can support the organisation to improve employee retention. This flexible benefits scheme enables employees to choose between various benefits, which are provided by the employer. First this thesis elaborates the theoretical framework of the conducted empirical study. Therefore employee retention, value-oriented human resource management and value-oriented incentive system are explained. As a result, the information collected through the theoretical study illustrates that there is a growing demand for a value-oriented flexible benefits scheme. The second part of the thesis examines the present state of the organisation EVOMOTIV GmbH and presents the results of the company data analysis. The aim is to identify the influences on increasing turnover of staff and employee satisfaction. From these results, it can be concluded that the main cause of the turnover is the business model used by the company and that the employee satisfaction has been increasing yearly. To develop such a value-oriented flexible benefits scheme, an empirical study was conducted together with the employees of the EVOMOTIV GmbH. The study consisted of questionnaires in combination with a workshop. The aim was to establish contents for the flexible benefits scheme based on of the values and needs of the employees. The questionnaires were used to gain more information on the present state. The result of this thesis is a new flexible benefits system, which is based on the needs and values of the employees in the EVOMOTIV GmbH. Moreover the thesis demonstrates that the system supports the improvement of employee retention, yet its efficiency is limited through the effect of the business model. To measure the efficiency and to keep the system up-to-date with future employee values, a long-term survey is recommended by the author

FANON E OCALAN
This work aims to discuss Abdullah Öcalan\u27s thinking under the light of Frantz Fanon\u27s reflections on coloniality. We will try to present, first, a brief introduction on the Kurdish question. Next, we shall discuss the specificity of the Kurdistan Workers\u27 Party (PKK) in the Kurdish party spectrum. We will then move on to a more in-depth analysis of Öcalan\u27s elaborations on the “new man” he stands for, as well as the role of women in the Kurdistan revolution. So presented the propositions of this author and militant, we seek to undertake a Fanonian criticism of the rescue of Kurdish history and "personality" as proposed by Öcalan
