Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Caracterización de la “pertinencia social situada”, en perspectiva de su intervención en las investigaciones científico-sociales
Get PDFThis research characterizes “situated social significance” (PSS in Spanish) as a category of epistemic-methodological base emerging from an internal differentiation, consequent to the conceptual operationalization of the initial analytical category: “social significance” and piloting on the documentary field of analysis.
The study is configured on a documentary field of 29 practical, concrete cases, represented by doctoral thesis, defended, and approved in postgraduate courses at six Argentine public management universities. The latter represented the total of higher education institutions accredited by CONEAU that, during the period between 2012 and 2016, had postgraduate degrees specifically called: "doctorates in social sciences."
The research level was initially exploratory, descriptive, in perspective qualitative, based on documentary information sources (doctoral thesis in social sciences) with direct registry observation and collection of information by content analysis. This methodological strategy allowed adding to the proposed level of study, an explanatory approach, coming from the inferential component of the former.
The empirical plane of the object of study is not configured by the actors of the contents communicational that make up the thesis (neither issuing author, nor receiving author), but the products resulting from the research process itself. The epistemic plot promoted permeated a central particularity, linked to the relevance of the contexts. This validated the construction of a working hypothesis in perspective of an initial thesis: “the sense of the pertinently social in scientific knowledge productions -doctoral thesis in social sciencescan be visualized based on the attributes and indicators of situationally, expressed in thecategory: “situated social relevance” (PSS).
This research concludes by validating this hypothesis, evidence in the results obtained a marked orientation of a PSS on a vertical model of construction of scientific knowledge, a fact that also enabled the opportunity to challenge by alternatively proposing a horizontal orientation, typical of the PSS, contemplating among its most relevant empirical indicators: the positioning of the researcher, his method, justification, and results.
Without ignoring the degree of academic importance of the service generated from the institutional production of knowledge through research, the idea is to wonder about the fate of these productions in the key to practical social interest. On that boarding line, the PSS passes.
When the attributes, characteristics, properties and/or variables linked to the situationally component of the PSS are absent in the knowledge process produced, or are not clearly targeted, the risk of a product (albeit scientifically valid), socially impertinent, is at risk. In the intervention of the PSS, the potential for social transfer of the knowledge produced and consequently the transformative impulse of the investigated social reality is defined and guided.El presente artículo sintetiza la caracterización y definición de la “pertinencia social situada” (PSS) como una categoría de base epistémico-metodológica emergente de parte de los resultados de una investigación académica, configurada sobre un campo documental de 29 casos prácticos, concretos y representados por tesis de doctorado en ciencias sociales, defendidas y aprobadas en posgrados de seis universidades argentinas de gestión pública.
La inclusión de los conceptos de PS/PSS en el marco de la educación superior universitaria pública, particularmente en la función investigación de posgrados, constituyó otro elemento de análisis coadyuvante al de las tesis de doctorado en calidad de unidad de análisis. El plano empírico del objeto de estudio (PSS), lo configuraron el proceso y los productos de conocimiento, resultantes de investigaciones de carácter científico social, con la aplicación. Se hace referencia a la tesis de doctorado en ciencias sociales UNER, defendida por el autor del presente artículo, titulada: La “pertinencia social situada”, a través de las investigaciones científicas de universidades públicas argentinas, dentro del campo de las Ciencias Sociales durante el período 2012-2016.
El marco metodológico de la investigación precitada si bien no forma parte del presente comunicación, incluyó originalmente en su diseño y desarrollo: la presentación del corpus de análisis; justificación del uso documental de 29 tesis de doctorado y planes de estudio; universo; decisiones muestrales: operacionalización del universo; unidades de análisis: de muestreo, registro y contexto. Justificación de la selección de unidades muestrales. Criterios de inclusión/exclusión en la selección de “las piezas” (tesis como casos). Espacios de atributos: selección de variables. Fuentes de información secundarias y su justificación. El análisis de contenido como estrategia técnica para la producción y análisis de datos en perspectiva de focalización de la pertinencia social situada: criterios y procedimientos para la recolección y volcado de información, procesos de codificación y categorización. Sistematización e interpretación de resultados generales y particulares por análisis de contenido: codificación y categorización de unidades de análisis para el análisis de contenido de las tesis. de la estrategia metodológica de análisis de contenido (AC).
La trama epistémica impulsada por la PSS permea una particularidad central vinculada a la racionalidad del investigador en orden a los principios de su posicionamiento en el proceso de investigación y presencia explícita ante el/lo “otro” investigado (en clave co-constituyente); la argumentación de la justificación del destino y compromiso social de lo producido; su/s método/s y recursos de recolección de información con relevancia contextual microsocial;, todo ello, inserto bajo criterios de una dimensión de situacionalidad que también la caracteriza.La idea directriz que a manera de hipótesis de trabajo, sustentó todo el desarrollo de la investigación precitada, afirma que “el sentido de lo pertinentemente social en las producciones de conocimiento científicas -en este caso estudiada en tesis de doctorado en ciencias sociales- se puede visualizar en función de los atributos e indicadores expresados estos en la categoría propuesta como PSS. Dicha caracterización, define y orienta la potencialidad de transferencia social del conocimiento producido y consecuentemente, el impulso transformador de la realidad social investigada”.
La línea de abordaje por la que se despliega la PSS, encuentra en una de sus vertientes de justificación, el preguntarse por el destino real de estas producciones científico-académicas en función del interés práctico social resultante, aspirando a reducir la diáspora y agonía documental de valiosas producciones de investigación de rango científico social (particularmente académicas), en nichos inconsultos de bibliotecas universitarias o anclados en contenidos curriculares personales. Los resultados de la investigación precitada, posibilitó sostener una predominante idea directriz en donde los indicadores de PSS se orientan hacia un “modelo vertical” (tradicional) y hegemónico de construcción de conocimiento científico social. Esta situación habilitó la oportunidad de interpelar esos resultados y proponer alternativa y originalmente, la categoría PSS, basada en una perspectiva de “orientación horizontal”, en donde sus atributos específicos encuentran su orientación precisa.
Cuando los atributos vinculables a la PSS están ausentes a lo largo de todo el proceso de investigación o se presentan esporádicamente durante su desarrollo, o no se focalizan con claridad, se corre el riesgo de estar frente a una producción de conocimiento que, aún validada científicamente, puede considerarse socialmente impertinente en cuanto a la debilidad de su potencial transferencia y/o impacto social (también potencial o concreto). Así, con la intervención de la PSS se intenta dotar o reforzar el impulso transformador (y/o innovador) de aporte a destinado a una realidad social particularmente investigada

Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
