Development of a nutritionally balanced, melt‐in‐the‐mouth chocolate for patients with epidermolysis bullosa
Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a group of inherited blistering disorders that primarily affect the skin and mucous membranes of the digestive tract, which can lead to poor nutritional status. Dietary supplements and nutritional support methods, such as nasogastric tubes and gastrostomy, have been employed to improve the nutritional status of patients with EB; however, few foods are suitable for enjoyable eating with family and friends. Here, we introduce a nutritionally balanced, melt-in-the-mouth chocolate called andew, which was specifically designed for patients with EB. The andew chocolate is nutritionally superior and melts more easily than traditional chocolates, thus it is suitable for patients with EB, who are prone to oral erosions. Patients responded more favorably to the taste and texture of andew than to those of other dietary supplements. Not only does andew provide nutritional benefits, but it also promotes enjoyable eating with family members and friends, which could positively impact patients' mental health

Abstract. The aim of the study was to investigate the dynamic of the endotoxemia markers' plasmatic concentrations and the possibility of using them for outcome prediction in patients with the severe combined chest trauma during early posttraumatic period. Study was performed on 73 male patients aged from 20 to 68. The concentrations of oxidative stress markers do not represent the activity of oxidative processes in case of massive infusion therapy especially on 1-2-d day after trauma. The level of the medium-sized peptides fractions concentrations can reflect severity of endotoxemia better than routine clinical markers (urea and creatinine) and can serve as additional markers for outcome prediction in patients with the severe combined thoracic trauma. The severity of injury and the level of traumatic shock leads to proportional accumulation of the peptide fraction of the medium-sized peptides up to 5-6-th day after trauma.
Key words: chest trauma, polytrauma, endogenous intoxication, oxidative stress, wound dystrophy.

The left-wing road to fascism : an investigation of the influence of 'socialist' ideas upon the political ideology of the British Union of Fascists.
The primary conclusion drawn by the thesis is that the political ideology of the BUF clearly exhibited a left-wing strand which is described as the BUF's brand of fascist
'socialism'. This strand (whilst a travestic and heretical form of socialism) considered the BUF to be more radical and virile than the Labour movement and, alone amongst political movements, capable of bringing about a national revolution which would contain a socio-economic reorientation of the country along classic socialist lines - an end to poverty, the building of houses and job creation - with Trade Unions taking a central role, within the framework of the Corporate State, in the industrial decision making process. It is not suggested that this strand was a self-contained concept within the BUF. The thesis has simply taken the heuristic step of grouping together these ideas in order to highlight
the presence of an identifiable strand within the BUF's political ideology. The thesis supports the school of academic thought which believes that fascism must be taken seriously as a genuine political ideology if it is to be understood. Fascism is viewed as an eclectic political
ideology containing a clear potential (although one not
necessarily realised) to exhibit a strand of thought which was at base a fascistic revision of socialism. In
regards to the methodology adopted by the thesis, the generic theories of fascism devised by Griffin, Sternhell, Eatwell and Payne, it was concluded that in tile context of this thesis all proved capable of predicting the potential
inherent in fascist ideology to grow from left-wing roots and exhibit a brand of fascist 'socialism'. In terms
of the theories' use as research tools it is Griffin's which stands out, due to its combination of profundity and
lucidity, which gives his theory an operational simplicity,
flexibility and heuristic quality

The role of sand lances (Ammodytes sp.) in the Northwest Atlantic ecosystem: a synthesis of current knowledge with implications for conservation and management. Fish and Fisheries, 00, (2020): 1-34, doi:10.1111/faf.12445.The American sand lance (Ammodytes americanus, Ammodytidae) and the Northern sand lance (A. dubius, Ammodytidae) are small forage fishes that play an important functional role in the Northwest Atlantic Ocean (NWA). The NWA is a highly dynamic ecosystem currently facing increased risks from climate change, fishing and energy development. We need a better understanding of the biology, population dynamics and ecosystem role of Ammodytes to inform relevant management, climate adaptation and conservation efforts. To meet this need, we synthesized available data on the (a) life history, behaviour and distribution; (b) trophic ecology; (c) threats and vulnerabilities; and (d) ecosystem services role of Ammodytes in the NWA. Overall, 72 regional predators including 45 species of fishes, two squids, 16 seabirds and nine marine mammals were found to consume Ammodytes. Priority research needs identified during this effort include basic information on the patterns and drivers in abundance and distribution of Ammodytes, improved assessments of reproductive biology schedules and investigations of regional sensitivity and resilience to climate change, fishing and habitat disturbance. Food web studies are also needed to evaluate trophic linkages and to assess the consequences of inconsistent zooplankton prey and predator fields on energy flow within the NWA ecosystem. Synthesis results represent the first comprehensive assessment of Ammodytes in the NWA and are intended to inform new research and support regional ecosystem‐based management approaches. This manuscript is the result of follow‐up work stemming from a working group formed at a two‐day multidisciplinary and international workshop held at the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge, Massachusetts in May 2017, which convened 55 experts scientists, natural resource managers and conservation practitioners from 15 state, federal, academic and non‐governmental organizations with interest and expertise in Ammodytes ecology. Prefigurative Politics: Perils and Promise
Many recent social movements have been characterised by their commitment to direct democratic decision-making procedures and leaderless, non-hierarchic organizational structures. This political tendency also implies the search for autonomy from existing political institutions and practises. Movements seek instead to embody in the political action itself the social relations, ways of collective decision-making and values that are ultimately desired for the whole society. This prefigurative approach to social change is often criticized for being naiive or marginal. This thesis argues first that this is not the case, but that prefigurative politics is misunderstood due to its differing view on questions of strategy, organisation and ultimately the possibility of fundamental societal change. The dissertation first outlines the often implicit strategy or vision of change underpinning prefigurative politics. It then identifies as the key challenge for prefigurative movements their ability to avoid reproducing oppressive forms of power, ‘power-over.’ This understudied aspect is investigated through extensive ethnographic field research with the unemployed workers movement, MTD Lanús in Buenos Aires, and the Zapatista movement in Mexico. The thesis concludes that it seems impossible to completely avoid reproducing old forms of power. Often key individuals in the movements end up in a paradoxical position whereby, in an effort to ensure the group’s prefigurative nature, these individuals enjoy non-prefigurative influence. The findings imply that the state and corresponding political forms and practise are not the only source of hierarchic pressures. As such, it would be more useful to view prefigurative political action as desirable, yet impossible
Russia's European agenda and the Baltic states
Russia has always been a primary factor in the development of the Baltic States. It is
impossible to analyse Baltic security without looking into the processes inside Russia and the prevailing trends vis-a-vis the Baltic States. However, the changes in the Baltic security landscape in the 21st century lack a comprehensive analysis. This
thesis seeks to bridge the gap.
Two key aims are being pursued in this thesis. The first is to present an analysis of Russia's European agenda under President Vladimir Putin and to examine the place of
the Baltic States in this agenda. The second aim is to define Russia-related threats and
challengers to the Baltic States, as well as prospects in Russo-Baltic relations.
To attain these aims, inter-active approach to international relations, comprising three
levels of analysis - the international system, the nation state (domestic level) and the individual (personality) level - has been applied. The neo-realist paradigm of
international relations theory, comparative analysis and the Knudsen model, which
addresses the peculiarities of relations between great powers and small states, are the methodological framework of the thesis.
When analysing the development of Russo-Baltic relations in 1990-2006, this thesis
focuses on the evolution of the Baltic States from factors to actors and their chance of shaping Russo-Baltic relations from within the enlarged EU and NATO. It also
examines possibilities for more active engagement of Russia in the Baltic region.
The thesis concludes with an analysis of perspectives for the Baltic States in
countering Russia-related threats and building cooperativer elations with Russia. The author maintains that 'high politics' in Russo-Baltic relations has ended, yet, the
tensions do remain in 'low politics'. Russia seeks to retain her political and economic
influence in the Baltics by exploiting various tools, primarily economic levers and
Baltic dependence upon Russian energy
The prospect of providing low-income medium density housing in developing countries : problems and opportunities with special reference to Cape Town, South Africa
Includes bibliography. It is thus proposed in this thesis that low-income medium-density developments, located appropriately in inner city areas to kick-start settlements that are integrated, compact and promote mixed land uses, as well as aspiring towards sustainable urban development, are needed in the cities of developing countries. A typical example of such a housing development is Springfield Terrace Woodstock, Cape Town. This pilot project, demonstrating how the provision oflow-income medium-density housing (in the fonn of three- to four-storey walk-up blocks of flats) can be provided in central Cape Town and how these benefit from the existing bulk infrastructure. It further demonstrates how this housing type could be located and utilised to encourage a shift away from low-density to medium-density housing, particularly with regard to lowincome earners
