Anthony Anzalone interview, 09 February 2006

    No full text
In this 2006 interview, Anthony Anzalone, a long time resident of the Detroit-Shoreway neighborhood, talks about his life experiences in this west side neighborhood of Cleveland. Mr. Anzalone grew up in the neighborhood in the 1950s and recounts memories of his Italian grandfather, who played a trumpet in a local band, playing at the Lady of Mount Carmel annual festival and parade. Mr. Anzalone also talks about Our Lady of Mount Carmel as an anchor of the community, and about Father Marino who served at the Church for decades and effected many changes in the neighborhood designed to keep the neighborhood together. Mr. Anzalone also talks about his involvement with Ray Pianka in the 1980s to restore the neighborhood, including the Gordon Square Arcade. Mr. Anzalone talks about a number of the buildings in the area, and businesses in these buildings – both past and present

A study for cloud parameter retrieval from the IR cloud cameras of the Auger observatory

The Pierre Auger Observatory operative in Argentina, studies the ultra-high energy cosmic rays with energies above 1018eV. The atmosphere is also monitored by a collection of different instruments. In this paper we present a study on the retrieval of the cloud coverage from the atmospheric monitoring data collected by the four IR cloud cameras placed in the sites of the Observatory. We discuss two different algorithms that supply pixel by pixel cloudiness information in the form of binary masks. The final objective of the study is collecting different algorithms to obtain a reliable set that allow to overcome most of the more frequent ambiguities due to particular cloud configurations and atmospheric conditions during the acquisitions. This can support the cloudiness masks already provided by the AUGER data base. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved

The Herbarium Anzalone: rearrangement and computerized cataloguing. In this paper we explain the research methods and the first results of the computerized cataloguing of a collection holding a particular value in the knowledge of the flora of Central Italy: the Herbarium of Bruno Anzalone (1921-2007). This collection is kept in the Herbarium of the University of Rome “Sapienza” (RO)

The goal of the Italian workshop series on Artificial Intelligence and RObotics(AIRO) is to present, discuss and assess recent advances in the deployment ofArtificial Intelligence (AI) methods in Robotics. AI principles and methods playa crucial role in several areas of the robotics research (e.g. field, service, socialrobotics, etc.) and are pervasively exploited at various levels of robot archi-tectures for different purposes: sensing and perception, reasoning and decision, learning, intelligent control, adaptive and social behavior, verification and valida-tion methods, etc. Starting from these diverse -yet intertwined- research fields, the AIRO workshop series aims at providing an established long-term Italianforum where the AI community and the Robotics community may find an inter-esting and stimulating common ground. This volume contains the proceedingsof the sixth edition of the AIRO workshop1, which was held in Rende, Italy,on November 22 2019. This edition of the AIRO workshop accepted 9 papersinvolving 33 authors. The program was structured into three sectionsHuman-robot interaction,Planning and Robotics, andMobile Robots. The contributionscovered several aspects of AI and Robotics in the areas of Industrial, Service andSocial Robotics and mainly concerned with the following research topics: human-robot interaction, robot learing, semantic mapping, brain computer interefaces, planning and scheduling, architectures and interfaces for robot control. The workshop program opened with the keynote talk of Prof. Daniele Nardi, full professor at Sapienza, Universit`a di Roma, titledS-AvE: Semantic ActiveVision Exploration and Mapping for Mobile Robots in Indoor Environments. The research topics and the results collected in these proceedings illustratethe work of an active and multidisciplinary research community and confirmthe growing interest for a forum where AI and Robotics researchers can find acommon ground

Measurements of High Energy Cosmic Rays and Cloud presence: A method to estimate Cloud Coverage in Space and Ground-Based Infrared Images

Several projects and already-operative observatories aimed at detecting High Energy Cosmic Rays (HECR) are/will be equipped with instruments to monitor the atmosphere. Since cloud presence can affect the night-time indirect measurements of the HECRs and Cherenkov radiation, it is crucial to know the meteorological conditions during the observation period of the HECR detectors. Several meteorological satellites already provide useful information, however to obtain accurate reconstructions of the detected events it is more suitable using devices that operate synchronously with the main detector. To this purpose, infrared cameras that acquire images of the whole field of view are thought to support the atmosphere monitoring during observations from both space and ground. Meaningful parameters, like cloud coverage and cloud top/bottom height, can be retrieved from the analysis of those data. Multi-spectral information are typically analyzed and combined to obtain cloud masks for each image, where a cloudy/cloud-free probability flag is associated with each pixel. These algorithms normally use several spectral bands that are not always available in non-meteorological sensors. A different approach is presented in this paper. It only relies on the gray level values of the image pixel, and it can be applied on thermal infrared as well as visible images acquired from both space and ground. To test the method on real cloudy scenes, images from polar satellite and all-sky data archives are considered, and the results are compared to the corresponding cloudiness masks provided by the same data repositories...

Libertà, coscienza e legge morale in Karl Heinrich Heydenreich
