Business in the backwaters : how ‘distance from the core’ impacts entrepreneurs’ lived experiences
Using a phenomenological approach, we analyse the voices of entrepreneurs living in the peripheral ecosystems of Newcastle Upon Tyne (UK), Palermo (Italy) and Perth (Australia). These ecosystems are defined by the considerable physical distance between their geographical location and the location of a larger, more established ‘core’ ecosystem in their nation. The purpose of our paper is to examine how distance from the core is perceived to both enable and constrain entrepreneurship in peripheral contexts. We introduce ‘distance from the core’ as a significant hitherto unexplored theme to consider when exploring the lived experiences of entrepreneurs in peripheral contexts. Empirically, we present data that affirms and expands extant findings revealing how entrepreneurs rooted in peripheral contexts react to the structural conditions around them. Methodologically, we demonstrate the value of phenomenological research in revealing the subjective ways entrepreneurial agency, structure and distance intersect. We highlight that policymakers must take the voices of entrepreneurs in a peripheral ecosystem into account when designing and implementing enterprise policies that aim to develop entrepreneurship in peripheral contexts

A little less structuration, a little more action : examining entrepreneurial agency in two marginal ecosystems
Entrepreneurs form and grow businesses in relation to the localised context around them (structure) and also through their own choices and actions (agency). In this way, structure and agency intersect in the lived experiences of entrepreneurs. The purpose of this work is to explore entrepreneurial agency in two ecosystems that, as structures, constrain entrepreneurship within them: Newcastle Upon Tyne (UK) and Perth (Australia). We add to extant analysis that empirically looks at the active agency entrepreneurs participate in, as they attempt to overcome the structural level constraints they encounter. Methodologically, we draw on phenomenological data, arriving at a highly detailed insight, drawing attention to the strong local entrepreneurial communities and distinctive cognitive mindsets that entrepreneurs in the ecosystems we study have agentically developed and cultivated. We suggest how future analysis of entrepreneurial agency may unfold and consider the implications of our insight from a policy implementation perspective
Pengaruh Enuma Elish dalam Penafsiran Kitab Daniel 7:2-14
This research examines the influence of Enuma Elish, a Babylonian creation myth, on the interpretation of Daniel 7:2-14. Enuma Elish, as an ancient mythological literary work, contains cosmological elements and symbolism that may have influenced the understanding of the symbols found in the Book of Daniel. Through textual and contextual analysis, this study explores the possible relationship between the narratives of Enuma Elish and Daniel 7:2-14. The purpose of this research is to understand the meaning of the symbol of the 'Son of Man' (a similarity between the two texts). This Son of Man has a similar vision in both Enuma Elish and Daniel 7:1-14, namely to destroy evil and restore the earth to its original state. The author uses the literature review method to determine the similarities and the extent of the influence of the Enuma Elish text on Daniel 7:1-14. Finally, the author explains the meaning of these similarities and differences, namely the hope in the Son of Man and Anshar.

Lonto Léok, a tradition from Manggarai, Indonesia, reflects a significant transformation in the context of unity and communal decisions. Originating from inter-tribal conflicts, this tradition has evolved into a symbol of family unity. In Lonto Léok, formal interaction mechanisms are led by a leader known as "Tu'a Golo," who serves as a facilitator and guides the deliberation process. There are three main stages in Lonto Léok: "caca" (unpack), "cica" (discuss), and "congko" (finalize), reflecting an intensive deliberation process to reach collective agreements. This research aims to elucidate the history, meaning, and mechanisms of Lonto Leok in Manggarai culture while highlighting issues that still need to be addressed. The author adopts a qualitative method based on literature review, interviews, and the author's direct experiences as data sources. The research findings reveal that the shift in the meaning of Lonto Léok from battle to family unity demonstrates cultural adaptability in the face of social change. Lonto Léok represents how the Manggarai community manages conflicts and achieves consensus through deliberation and agreement.AbstrakLonto Léok, sebuah tradisi dari Manggarai, Indonesia, mencerminkan transformasi signifikan dalam konteks persatuan dan keputusan komunal. CyTest – An Innovative Open-source Platform for Training and Testing in Cythopathology
AbstractThis paper describes an e-learning platform developed in the context of the European Project CyTest (2014-1-IT01-KA202-002607), dedicated to Cytological Training at European Standard through Telepathology. The main, and novel, feature of our system is the deep integration between virtual microscopy and the training system: images are not simply there to be seen but they are active parts of testing, supporting quantitative measurement of image comprehension, for instance by evaluating the identification of relevant cellular structures by the position of markers put by the student on the image. The solution we developed offers a complete tool for easy creation and interactive access to questions related to images and fully integrates the components of virtual microscopy and teaching, based on state-of-the-art instruments for digital pathology images management, as OMERO, and for training course distribution, as Moodle. The system can be easily extended to support histopathological diagnosis. The software is distributed as Open Source and available on GitHub
Perceptions of intellectual property: a review
In “The right to good ideas: patents and the poor”, The Economist depicts two driving forces in the contemporary discourse on IP and globalization. The one is interested in advancing the knowledge economy, an approach based on the belief that knowledge is the driving factor behind economic growth. The other resides on a belief that IP is a major means to advance the process of globalization. While the former is strongly motivated by new economic growth theory, as for example advanced by Stanford professor Paul Romer, the latter is based on typical anti-globalization arguments, such as for example the position that the IP system helps multinational companies to build up monopolies to the detriment of the poor, drives small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and local business in developing countries out of business and increases prices for consumer products, be they pharmaceuticals or software. The purpose of this review is to help understand the current discourse on intellectual property, to grasp underlying themes, assumptions and connotations associated with the term “IP”, so as to identify paths leading to a more comprehensive understanding of IP and the opportunities and pitfalls it may provide
Revisiting sustainable tourism research: bibliometric insights and future research agenda
Abstract
This bibliometric review synthesizes sustainable tourism research over the past three decades, focusing on its alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Based on 1,383 journal articles from the Web of Science database, the RStudio Bibliometrix package analysed bibliometric performance, thematic maps, and co-occurrence networks. The findings highlight the role of sustainable tourism in advancing different SDGs. Findings also indicate three broader thematic areas for future research, including regenerative tourism ecosystems, responsible tourism behaviours, and right-sizing tourism. Through this review, we propose future research directions to enhance knowledge on sustainable tourism and its contribution to the SDGs, providing a strategic roadmap for researchers and policymakers.Abstract

Firm’s Intangible Assets and Multinational Activity: Joint-Venture Versus FDI
This paper provides a theoretical formalisation of the joint-venture contract, as an alternative to Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), within a Dissipation of Intangible Assets framework. In a two-period, two-country equilibrium model, we discuss how the threat of knowledge spillover shapes the boundaries of a Multinational Enterprise. Similarly to the theoretical findings on the FDI-licensing trade off, we show that Foreign Direct Investment is more likely to emerge when know-how easily spills over – i.e. when firms are endowed with more intangible assets or they belong to high tech industries. Probit estimates, from an entirely new firm-level dataset, constructed by the author, show that the experience of Italian multinationals in Asia is in line with our theoretical predictions.Intangible assets, Internalisation, FDI, Joint-venture, Asia
