Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Los caminos no conformes de la razón. Acercamiento teórico a la ciencia ficción y la literatura fantástica a partir de dos textos de Bioy Casares y algunos conceptos matemáticos
Get PDFInternational audienceDiferenciar la literatura de ciencia ficción de literatura fantástica no cuesta mucho; en cambio resulta mucho menos obvio comparar ambos géneros, o sea lograr mirarlos desde una perspectiva que, preservando especificidades, evidencie relaciones de semejanza y cierta complementariedad. Solemos colocarles la etiqueta de “géneros especulativos” por tratarse de relatos en los cuales la imaginación es fuertemente regulada por la lógica y el razonamiento. Empezaré, entonces, analizando el modo inusual en que se relacionan razón e imaginación en esos relatos. Eso me llevará a focalizar en el código hermenéutico definido por Barthes (1915- 1980) y a establecer una curiosa correspondencia entre la terminología movilizada por el teórico francés y la terminología movilizada por los matemáticos cuando demuestran un teorema. Pondré a prueba los resultados obtenidos con dos textos de Adolfo Bioy Casares que pertenecen, respectivamente, a la ciencia ficción y a la literatura fantástica: su novela más famosa, La invención de Morel (1940), y un relato poco conocido titulado “Los afanes” (Historias fantásticas, 1972). Ambos tratan de un procedimiento técnico inventado para captar las almas, capaz de brindarle al hombre la oportunidad de sobrevivir, en ciertas condiciones, a su propia muerte. La finalidad de esta investigación no es trazar una línea divisoria entre ciencia ficción y literatura fantástica, sino adquirir herramientas metodológicas aptas para renovar nuestro acercamiento teórico a ambos géneros
Le discours fantastique est-il rationnel ?
Get PDFLa crítica ha señalado la importancia de la contradicción en lo que se refiere a la composición de la narrativa fantástica y ésta tiene su lugar asignado dentro del cuadrado semiótico de Greimas – un lugar hasta ahora no identificado como tal. Al considerar el acto de lectura como elaboración un acto demostrativo, nuestro método de investigación resalta ese papel fundamental de la contradicción. Dicho método, aplicado a tres textos emblemáticos de la narrativa fantástica, desemboca en efecto en la elaboración de teorías inconsistentes (que contienen una contradicción de tipo p p) pero no triviales, dentro de las cuales el principio aristotélico de no-contradicción no es válido. Con esto llegamos al límite de la racionalidad clásica y formulamos la siguiente pregunta : ¿es racional la narrativa fantástica ? En vez de contestar por la negativa, mostramos que la narrativa fantástica invita a traspasar el límite de la racionalidad clásica y a una extensión de la misma, pues se sitúa bajo la égida de una lógica formal menos restrictiva y más general que la clásica : la lógica paraconsistente de Newton da Costa.L'importance de la contradiction dans la composition du discours fantastique a été signalée par la critique et le carré sémiotique de Greimas assigne au fantastique une place de choix - non reconnue encore à ce jour. Le rôle structurant de la contradic- tion est confirmé par la méthode d'investigation ici proposée, qui envisage l'acte de lecture sur le mode de l'élaboration d'un acte démonstratif. Cette méthode, appliquée à trois textes emblématiques du discours fantastique, aboutit en effet à l'élaboration de théories inconsistantes (contenant une contradiction du type p ∧ p) mais non triviales, au sein desquelles le principe aristotélicien de non contradiction n'est pas valable. On touche là aux limites de la raison classique, d'où mon questionnement : le discours fantastique est-il rationnel? Plutôt que de répondre par la négative, je montre que la non-absurdité du discours fantastique invite au dépassement des limites de la raison classique et à une extension de cette dernière, car il se place sous l'égide d'une logique formelle moins contraignante et plus générale que la logique classique : la logique paraconsistante du mathématicien brésilien Newton da Costa

Get PDFWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
