Relative Haagerup property for arbitrary von Neumann algebras
No full textWe introduce the relative Haagerup approximation property for a unital, expected inclusion of arbitrary von Neumann algebras and show that if the smaller algebra is finite then the notion only depends on the inclusion itself, and not on the choice of the conditional expectation. Several variations of the definition are shown to be equivalent in this case, and in particular the approximating maps can be chosen to be unital and preserving the reference state. The concept is then applied to amalgamated free products of von Neumann algebras and used to deduce that the standard Haagerup property for a von Neumann algebra is stable under taking free products with amalgamation over finite-dimensional subalgebras. A comparison of deflation and the balancing Neumann-Neumann preconditioner
No full textIn this paper we compare various preconditioners for the numerical solution of partial differential equations. We compare the well-known balancing Neumann Neumann preconditioner used in domain decomposition methods with a so-called deflation preconditioner. We prove that the effective condition number of the deflated preconditioned system is always, i.e. for all deflation vectors and all restrictions and prolongations, below the condition number of the system preconditioned by the balancing Neumann-Neumann preconditioner. Even more, we establish that both preconditioners lead to almost the same spectra. The zero eigenvalues of the deflation preconditioned system are replaced by eigenvalues which are one if the balancing Neumann-Neumann preconditioner is used. Moreover, we proved that the A-norm of the errors of the iterates build by the deflation preconditioner is always below the A-norm of the errors of the iterates build by the balancing Neumann-Neumann preconditioner. Additionally, the amount of work of one iteration of the de ation preconditioned system is less than the amount of work of one iteration of the balancing Neumann-Neumann preconditioned system. Finally, we establish that the deflation preconditioner and the balancing Neumann-Neumann preconditioner produces the same iterates if one uses certain starting vectors. Facilitating Low-Carbon Investments: Lessons from Natural Gas
No full textDecarbonisation of energy and transport infrastructure requires significant private sector investments. The natural gas industry has demonstrated such large scale private sector infrastructure investment over the last decades, typically using long-term contractual arrangements. Are therefore institutional frameworks necessary that facilitate long-term contracting or provide regulation reassuring about future resource streams associated with low-carbon infrastructure - or do factors idiosyncratic to natural gas explain the prevalence of long-term contracts in natural gas infrastructure investment? We identify four reasons for the use of long-term contracting arrangements. The transformation of the natural gas industry and regulatory structure has gradually reduced the rational for three of these reasons, suggesting that remaining rational, securing of revenue streams to finance investments has become the main motivation for the use of long-term contracts. This rational is not idiosyncratic to the natural gas industry, and thus suggests that long-term contracting can also play a significant role in facilitating low-carbon infrastructure investment. We furthermore discuss the role of institutional frameworks necessary for long-term contracting, and identify the significant role governments have been playing in sharing the counterparty risk inherent in long-term contracts.Investment, low-carbon economy, natural gas

Media coverage of firms in the presence of multiple signals: a configurational approach
No full textRecent management research suggests that firms try to orchestrate conformity and distinctiveness in their behavior to reconcile opposing demands of norm compliance and competitive distinction in order to appear optimally distinct. Whether they succeed or not depends on how audiences perceive the multiple signals they elicit. Extant literature has not fully uncovered how the media combine these different signals to form a representation of firms’ behavior and their subsequent reactions to these combinations. We adopt a configurational approach to address this gap in the environmental sustainability context. Drawing on unique proprietary data on 118 cases in the energy utility industry and using fsQCA, we determine that different equifinal signal configurations are associated with positive media coverage regarding environmental behavior or the lack thereof. We then generate five patterns of signals that explain media reactions and disentangle the underlying logics behind them. Our study adds to the research on the multifaceted nature of signal (in)congruence perception by discussing the role of conformity and distinctiveness and highlighting that this perception depends on the signals’ credibility. Delivering a balanced orchestration of conformity and distinctiveness signals is possible, but complex, because audiences tend to penalize incongruent postures they cannot associate with a given category
