Electricity Supply and Demand Control in a Car as Power Plant Neighborhood: A Agent Based Model

No full text
Car as Power Plant (CaPP) neighborhoods are an innovative approach to achieve sustainable, self-sufficient local energy systems. A key component of CaPP systems is a fleet of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), which provides mobility but also operates as decentralized power plants. The CaPP approach still requires proof of concept, this is partly due to the present-day low market penetration of FCEVs. This thesis aimed to contribute to that proof of concept by quantifying the influences of electricity supply and demand control on the electricity balance of a CaPP neighborhood. To that end, an agent-based model of the socio-technical system of a 200 household CaPP neighborhood is developed. The model is used for an elaborate exploration of the performance of a CaPP neighborhood with respect to its electricity balance. A variety of Dutch scenarios, with diverse degrees of social cohesion, number of FCEVs, seasons and control structure settings, is assessed.Technology, Policy and ManagementEngineering, Systems and ServicesEnergy and Industr

A microworld model for multiagent computer-aided process planning.

No full text
This Thesis proposes and investigates a novel framework for the study of multiagent solutions for computer-aided process planning (CAPP) in manufacturing systems. The framework is based on a domain-specific microworld model of CAPP, called the CAPP World. The motivation comes from the current literature on multiagent systems (MAS) for CAPP, which emphasized the need for comparative studies that would identify the most suitable domain-specific multiagent solutions, and from the observation that a simple, manageable framework for such studies had not been developed. The proposed CAPP World is characterized by a product class, a model of a manufacturing cell, and appropriate adaptation and simplification of CAPP modeling concepts from the literature. These abstractions lead to a collection of specific actions that jointly construct a process plan in CAPP World. The analysis shows that the model meets its design objectives of being: simple integral in the sense of including the main aspects of CAPP representative of properties and difficulties in real-world CAPP and suitable for formulation and investigation of MAS solutions for CAPP. The suitability of CAPP World for domain-specific MAS studies is demonstrated through construction of concrete scenarios addressing topics such as: agent encapsulation, cooperation and coordination among team members, cooperative iterative improvements of process plan, improving the efficiency of process planning through caching of design solutions, team composition, and communication mechanisms. The Thesis also identifies some topics for future research. --P.[i]The original print copy of this thesis may be available here: http://wizard.unbc.ca/record=b164402

Circulating tumor cell detection in high-risk non-metastatic prostate cancer

Results: The median age was 70\ua0years, median PSA was 14.1, and the median Gleason score was 9. The median 5-year risk of progression of disease using a validated nomogram was 39\ua0%. Five out of 36 patients (14\ua0%, 95\ua0% CI 5–30\ua0%) had CTCs detected in their circulation. Four patients had only 1 CTC per 7.5\ua0mL of blood detected. One patient had 3 CTCs per 7.5\ua0mL of blood detected, which included a circulating tumor microemboli. Both on univariate analysis and multivariate analysis, there were no correlations found between CTC positivity and the classic prognostic factors including PSA, Gleason score, T-stage and age

A survey of attitudes of judges and debaters toward comparative advantage cases.

This thesis sought to determine the attitudes of judges and debaters toward the comparative advantage case structure. This type of case development differs from the traditional need-plan case in that it proposes a change from the present system on the basis of an advantage accrued rather than a harm eliminated. This approach, originally suggested by George Musgrave in 1945, became popular in intercollegiate debate during the 1960's. A survey was administered to judges and debaters at three tournaments: two for college students and one for high school students. During one round of debate at each tournament, all participants filled out a copy of a questionnaire designed to determine their attitudes toward comparative advantage cases. The study showed that the comparative advantage case is considered a legitimate case that will continue to be used by debaters. Respondents labeled the case easier to debate for the affirmative team, but not easier for the negative team, the judge, nor the coach. Participants preferred the first affirmative constructive speaker to present all of the advantages and the plan and the first negative constructive speaker to attack the advantages. The survey also revealed that the case is considered applicable to life situations because of the value judgements it involves
