No full textEntre Este y Oeste. Un viaje por las fronteras de Europa es una crónica de viaje por el espacio, pero también por el tiempo. En 1991, cuando la autora, Anne Applebaum, recorrió las tierras fronterizas de Europa, desde el Báltico hasta el mar Negro, descubrió un extraño ánimo de suspensión sobre el que, más de tres décadas después, en la introducción a la edición del libro publicada en este 2023, escribía: «La sensación de que el imperio soviético había desaparecido, pero nada había llegado todavía a reemplazarlo, se vio bruscamente revertida por la llegada de la cultura global, la encarnizada lucha política y la revolucionaria agitación económica». Lo que narra en sus páginas es la historia de una superficie extensísima ‒y planísima, como si la geografía invitase a la conquista‒ que sucesivas tribus, imperios, naciones fueron delimitando con fronteras mil veces trazadas, borradas y vueltas a definir de nuevo en virtud de alianzas, estrategias e incluso argucias. Un proceso tortuoso e inacabado que presenta como única constante la sangre con la que hoy día se siguen dibujando y desdibujando las líneas de frontera. La guerra en Ucrania, tras la invasión rusa, ha devuelto la actualidad a una zona y a un texto que supo encarnar la historia en las vidas de aquellos con los que la autora se cruzó, habló y preguntó. Puede que, como se lee en la contraportada del libro, las vidas narradas aparezcan como un registro documental de un mundo que ya no existe, pero saber de ellas es una obligación si se quieren conocer las claves y los porqués de lo que ahora existe

She has been portrayed as a kind of mediator who attempts to explain the essence and sources of the diverse identities and narratives that have formed among the nations and cultures of Central and Eastern Europe.
