    Root hairs are extensions of root epidermal cells and a model system for directional tip growth of plant cells. A previously uncharacterized Arabidopsis thaliana phosphatidylinositol-4-phosphate 5-kinase gene (PIP5K3) was identified and found to be expressed in the root cortex, epidermal cells, and root hairs. Recombinant PIP5K3 protein was catalytically active and converted phosphatidylinositol-4-phosphate to phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate [PtdIns(4,5)P(2)]. Arabidopsis mutant plants homozygous for T-DNA-disrupted PIP5K3 alleles were compromised in root hair formation, a phenotype complemented by expression of wild-type PIP5K3 cDNA under the control of a 1500-bp PIP5K3 promoter fragment. Root hair-specific PIP5K3 overexpression resulted in root hair deformation and loss of cell polarity with increasing accumulation of PIP5K3 transcript. Using reestablishment of root hair formation in T-DNA mutants as a bioassay for physiological functionality of engineered PIP5K3 variants, catalytic activity was found to be essential for physiological function, indicating that PtdIns(4,5)P(2) formation is required for root hair development. An N-terminal domain containing membrane occupation and recognition nexus repeats, which is not required for catalytic activity, was found to be essential for the establishment of root hair growth. Fluorescence-tagged PIP5K3 localized to the periphery of the apical region of root hair cells, possibly associating with the plasma membrane and/or exocytotic vesicles. Transient heterologous expression of full-length PIP5K3 in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum) pollen tubes increased plasma membrane association of a PtdIns(4,5)P(2)-specific reporter in these tip-growing cells.     The joint Simon effect depends on perceived agency, but not intentionality, of the alternative action

    A co-actor’s intentionality has been suggested to be a key modulating factor for joint action effects like the joint Simon effect (JSE). However, in previous studies intentionality has often been confounded with agency defined as perceiving the initiator of an action as being the causal source of the action. The aim of the present study was to disentangle the role of agency and intentionality as modulating factors of the JSE. In Experiment 1, participants performed a joint go/nogo Simon task next to a co-actor who either intentionally controlled a response button with own finger movements (agency+/intentionality+) or who passively placed the hand on a response button that moved up and down on its own as triggered by computer signals (agency-/intentionality-). In Experiment 2, we included a condition in which participants believed that the co-actor intentionally controlled the response button with a Brain-Computer Interface while placing the response finger clearly besides the response button, so that the causal relationship between agent and action effect was perceptually disrupted (agency-/intentionality+). As a control condition, the response button was computer controlled while the co-actor placed the response finger besides the response button (agency-/intentionality-). We observed a JSE when the co-actor responded intentionally and the causal relationship between co-actor and action effect could be perceived, but not when the co-actor did not respond intentionally and the causal relationship was disrupted (Experiment 1). When the intentionality of the co-actor was maintained but the perception of the causal relationship between co-actor and action effect destroyed, the JSE was absent (Experiment 2). Our findings clearly indicate a vital role of a co-actor’s agency for the JSE and suggest that the ascription of agency is strongly perceptually grounded

    Two bifolios and one fragment from among the fragments of medical and pharmacological texts found in the binding of the Llibre d’Àpoques (containing the receipts of payments made by the clavario on behalf of the municipal council) dating from 1380 from the Municipal Archives of Girona, are analyzed because of their linguistic and historial value. The writing and the presentation suggest that they share the same author. Relying on content details, the author presents a probable arrangement of the pages’ original order. Many of the botanical terms are given in the Catalan language (they appear in the translation in cursive letters). The rendition of the Catalan words in Hebrew letters enables us to know their pronunciation at the time.Estudio de varios fragmentos manuscritos que contienen textos médicos y farmacológicos recuperados de las cubiertas de un Llibre d’àpoques (recibos de los pagos realizados por el clavario en nombre del concejo) del año 1380 del Arxiu Municipal de Girona. Los dos bifolios y el fragmento estudiados tratan de dolencias genitales en mujeres y en varones y de sus remedios y pertenecen al mismo manuscrito y eventualmente a un mismo autor. Los textos se han ordenado siguiendo un criterio temático con objeto de reconstruir la disposición original. El texto está en hebreo y contiene términos técnicos en lengua romance catalana (en cursiva, en la traducción), y permite elaborar un glosario de farmacopea de gran valor lingüístico e histórico, además de aportar información sobre su pronunciación

    MAIC-2, a latitudinal model for the Martian surface temperature, atmospheric water transport and surface glaciation

    The Mars Atmosphere-Ice Coupler MAIC-2 is a simple, latitudinal model, which consists of a set of parameterisations for the surface temperature, the atmospheric water transport and the surface mass balance (condensation minus evaporation) of water ice. It is driven directly by the orbital parameters obliquity, eccentricity and solar longitude (Ls) of perihelion. Surface temperature is described by the Local Insolation Temperature (LIT) scheme, which uses a daily and latitude-dependent radiation balance. The evaporation rate of water is calculated by an expression for free convection, driven by density differences between water vapor and ambient air, the condensation rate follows from the assumption that any water vapour which exceeds the local saturation pressure condenses instantly, and atmospheric transport of water vapour is approximated by instantaneous mixing. Glacial flow of ice deposits is neglected. Simulations with constant orbital parameters show that low obliquities favour deposition of ice in high latitudes and vice versa. A transient scenario driven by a computed history of orbital parameters over the last 10 million years produces essentially monotonically growing polar ice deposits during the most recent 4 million years, and a very good agreement with the observed present-day polar layered deposits. The thick polar deposits sometimes continue in thin ice deposits which extend far into the mid latitudes, which confirms the idea of “ice ages” at high obliquity
