No full textIl cervello in azione Le nuove scienze cognitive hanno ormai abbandonato la «metafora del computer», secondo la quale la mente umana è paragonabile a un software la cui comprensione non richiede informazioni sull'hardware, il corpo. Viceversa, ci troviamo di fronte a un mosaico di proposte teoriche adottate in molteplici settori di ricerca - dalla psicologia sperimentale alla filosofia della mente - e accomunate dall'idea che la maggior parte dei processi cognitivi superiori avvenga mediante i sistemi di controllo del corpo agente. Una mappa chiara per orientarsi nel mondo della «embodied cognition»

No full textThe collection of essays in Umberto Eco's Apocalittici e integrati is still able to offer noteworthy stimuli to contemporary media studies. This paper analyses one particular essay, that of "The Myth of Superman" (translated in English in The Role of the Reader), in order to focus upon three main aspects that seem crucial to understand both its current and historical value. Fistly, the uncommon methodological choice. By comparing and relating comics and ancient myths, Eco is able to go beyond traditional perspectives on cultural value, highlighting the continuuities and disruptions in popular culture narrations, starting from Greek tragedy, passing through modern novels to get to mass serialisation
Embodiment theory
No full textEmbodied cognition (EC) views propose that cognition is shaped by the kind of body that organisms possess. We give an overview of recent literature on EC, highlighting the differences between stronger and weaker versions of the theory. We also illustrate the debates on the notions of simulation, of representation, and on the role of the motor system for cognition, and we address some of the most important research topics. Future challenges concern the understanding of how abstract concepts and words are represented, and the relationship between EC and other promising approaches, the distributional views of meaning and the extended mind views
