Balzac’s Louis Lambert
This chapter studies Balzac's Louis Lambert (1832), in which the character of Lambert is a (possibly) mentally ill genius who retreats into a world to which only his erstwhile fiancée has access. Through his writings Balzac attempts to examine and portray a certain topic on the matter of geniuses: the essential role played by women in their survival. Louis Lambert ends with the destruction of the main character, a male genius who nonetheless exemplifies all Balzac's own ideas about genius, and is also its most complete and elaborate theorist. Once again, fiction's interest in its failure may reveal more about genius than success. And that failure is also accompanied—still with considerable ambiguity—by the female presence that Balzac argued also deserved recognition as the essential helpmeet of genius.</p
Shaken Baby Syndrome Education for Mothers Awaiting Appointments in Rural OB/GYN Office
A partnership between a nursing program and a rural obstetric office provided education to pregnant and postpartum women about coping with infant crying and the dangers of shaking a baby. Undergraduate nursing students delivered the Period of PURPLE Crying (PURPLE) educational program to 148 mothers. Change in knowledge about infant crying and the community clinical experience was evaluated. Pre and post intervention data were collected. Descriptive statistics indicated higher scores on mothers’ posttest for knowledge about normal newborn crying behaviors and coping strategies. Students further developed the role of educator and researcher. These findings suggest the intervention contributed to mothers’ improved knowledge about infant crying. Results of the pilot study are encouraging because the intervention had a significant effect on mothers’ knowledge about infant crying and Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS).

Re-envisioning Cyprus
Exhibition catalogue / edited volumeArtists and academics join forces in a common effort to “re-envision” Cyprus. The result is anedited volume and a photography & multimedia exhibition.
The authors of “Re-envisioning Cyprus” come from different disciplines – such asanthropology, social sciences, art history, literature, cultural theory and visual arts. They usevarious methods – some excavate past images, and some produce or comment on newones. They exploit all kinds of materials – such as press, studio or vernacular photos, statues, landmarks, urban constructions and religious spaces. What united them is first their wish tosee Cyprus with their own eyes and with their own minds, rather than through officialisinglenses, or narratives. Second, they are rather interested in photography, and how it can helpour conceptual understanding of the island.
The images each author has selected or produced will be included in the accompaniedexhibition. The exhibition will feature the work of visual artists from Cyprus and abroad andwill be opened by the Minister of Education and Culture, Mr. Andreas Demetriou onWednesday, December 8th at 8pm.
