No full textAnn Henderson nee Cox emigrated to South Australia from England with her first husband, John George Kelsey, and eight of her ten children, in 1860. They came to the Territory in 1873 where Ann ran businesses with her husband including the Palmerston Club and Commercial Hotels as well as a drapery in Mitchell Street. Her husband John was appointed to the Palmerston Council as a Clerk, Collector, Sanitary Inspector, Inspector of Slaughter-houses, and Registrar of Dogs. John died in Adelaide in 1889. Ann remarried to William James Henderson, a Northern Territory Telegraph Operator, and the couple returned to the Territory in March 1894. William managed the Katherine Telegraph Office as well as being appointed J.P. for the Katherine area. In 1895 when Ann was 58, she was one of the 82 women who enrolled to vote after the franchise was granted to South Australian and Territory women in 1894. Her occupation was listed as "married woman". They remained in the Territory until 1913 before leaving for Sydney and then Adelaide. Ann died in Malvern, South Australia in June 1927.Business WomanEnglis
