    An Architecture for Augmenting the SCORM Run-Time Environment with a Personalised Link Service

    As the result of recent advances in the business of e-learning there has been a growing interest in e-learning standards, particularly SCORM (Sharable Content Object Reference Model). SCORM is a reference model that integrates a collection of e-learning resource standards and specifications. In a SCORM compliant courseware, content and the pedagogic approach to be taken are predefined by the course author. As a consequence, users are unable to learn according to their preferences, and implicitly they will all encounter the same learning experience. Recent attempts to personalise learning in SCORM often resulted in either modifying SCORM or substituting its course sequencing mechanism with Adaptive Hypermedia techniques. Nonetheless, SCORM is a widely-used solution to interoperability problems with e-learning resources and can realise not only content sharing and reusability but also a consistent sequencing of course content across different systems and tools. For these reasons, this thesis focuses on supplementing SCORM sequencing rather than redefining it. The novelty of this work is that it builds an adaptive environment around the existing SCORM, without extending or modifying SCORM itself. The work integrates Adaptive Hypermedia principles into the SCORM Run-Time Environment as an independent service to support the environment with learning materials that are preferable to both teachers (primary materials of their choice) and students (supplementary materials that are pre-selected to suit some aspects of their user models to assist their understanding of the primary materials). This SCORM-complementing approach can also enable the SCORM Run-Time Environment to include on-demand external resources into the environment in order to address SCORM’s limitation of static pool of learning resources. The novel contribution of this work is the design of an authoring architecture which enables the automatic generation of a concept map and consequently links to alternative learning resources, and a run-time service oriented architecture which delivers these alternative resources, alongside the SCORM defined resources, according to a dynamic user model

    Colour appearance descriptors for image browsing and retrieval

    In this paper, we focus on the development of whole-scene colour appearance descriptors for classification to be used in browsing applications. The descriptors can classify a whole-scene image into various categories of semantically-based colour appearance. Colour appearance is an important feature and has been extensively used in image-analysis, retrieval and classification. By using pre-existing global CIELAB colour histograms, firstly, we try to develop metrics for wholescene colour appearance: “colour strength”, “high/low lightness” and “multicoloured”. Secondly we propose methods using these metrics either alone or combined to classify whole-scene images into five categories of appearance: strong, pastel, dark, pale and multicoloured. Experiments show positive results and that the global colour histogram is actually useful and can be used for whole-scene colour appearance classification. We have also conducted a small-scale human evaluation test on whole-scene colour appearance. The results show, with suitable threshold settings, the proposed methods can describe the whole-scene colour appearance of images close to human classification. The descriptors were tested on thousands of images from various scenes: paintings, natural scenes, objects, photographs and documents. The colour appearance classifications are being integrated into an image browsing system which allows them to also be used to refine browsing

As a consequence, users are unable to learn according to their preferences, and implicitly they will all encounter the same learning experience. Recent attempts to personalise learning in SCORM often resulted in either modifying or substituting SCORM specification elements. Nonetheless, SCORM is a widely-used solution to interoperability problems. For this reason, this work focuses on supplementing SCORM rather than redefining it. This is accomplished by dynamically associating each pre-authored learning material in a SCORM package with adaptive links to relevant supplementary resources upon delivery. As a result, we have developed a Personalised Link Service (PLS) to deliver these links into user’s SCORM-compliant learning environment. In this paper, we present the design of a PLS authoring architecture which enables the automatic generation of a concept map from a SCORM package and consequently links to alternative learning resources, and a PLS run-time service oriented architecture which delivers these alternative resources, alongside the SCORM defined resources, according to a user model. We demonstrate the feasibility of our architecture by implementing a service to support a simple notion of a user model (Preferred Learning style)

    This project paper describes the hardware and the software development of smart alarm for boarding school using Peripheral Interface Controller (PIC). The equipment is designed to remind the students and teachers about the school routine in the academie calendar year. Three alarm sectors are set in the boarding school. The sectors are academie building which operates during academie period, the girls hostel and the boys hostel which operate during the non-academic period including weekend. Separate sectors for academie, boys and girls are required so the minimal disturbance to other sectors is achieved. The system allows automatic setting up to alarm or siren in the appropriate sectors according pre planning list table. It also provide for alarm sounding in all sectors during emergencies

There are rapid increases in the produced information has had dual consequences as the management of particular health information has become even more complicated. Individuals are now struggle with the huge amounts of information that comes from diverse sources. Medical record officer plays important in ensuring the effective and efficient of medical records management throughout the healthcare service and therefore, Medical Records Officer should have the competencies and skills required of medical records professionals in healthcare industry. There are insufficiency skills in managing medical records program as there is no specific comprehensive scheme in measuring Medical Records Officer’s competency that suit to Malaysia environment. In this study, the roles and responsibilities related to the delivery of Medical Records management are determined and customized based on the Malaysia environment. This study served to contribute to the development of activities supporting the competencies required for Medical Records Officer as well as the development of university curriculum in Medical Records Management. Thus, it is also created to serve as a baseline for the acquisition and development of corresponding training. Interviews instruments were used and it participated of Medical Records Officer from three private hospitals.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

In summary, traditional network is hardware centric. Software Defined Networking has been a buzzword in the recent years. SDN move away from traditional architectures into a revolutionary service delivery platform able to readily and easily address changes within industry. Some of the core function of SDN are network flow can be controlled, and the important one, SDN is based on open standard and vendor neutral. However when SDN is being deployed, it is hard to track which packet goes to which path or go to which virtual switch. This is dependent on how the network administrator programs the network path.
