    Get PDF
Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) is an institute of national repute and is being funded by Department of Space (Government of India). However, a bibliometric study measuring its research output has not been carried out yet. The present study is a step in that direction and tries to find the publication pattern of research carried out in the institute. The period covered is 1997 to 2006. The study aims to quantify the publication output of researchers at the institute, to study the productivity of scientists in PRL and to determine whether it conforms to the Lotka’s Law. It tries to discern the authorship and collaboration pattern in journals as well as the conference proceedings. It also tries to find the preferred mode of publication of PRL scientists. The record of papers - published in journals and conference proceedings - and invited talks delivered have been used to study the publication pattern. The source for this data is the Annual Reports of the institute for the period of 1997-2006. The study found that multiple authored and double authored papers are on the rise in PRL. Comparing the data of collaborative papers in journals and conference proceedings, international collaboration is higher in journals than in conference proceedings. The journals most preferred by PRL scientists for publication are Physical Review A followed by Current Science and Physical Review D during 1997-2006. The study also found that Prof. G. S. Agarwal, was the most prolific author followed by Prof. A. K. Singhvi and Prof Utpal Sarkar as regards publications in journals

Research Data Management in India: A Pilot Study

    No full text
Data is a by-product of the research process where published results are the output. More and more research institutes are getting interested in this by-product. Data could be in the form of statistics, experimental results, observational data, interview recordings, etc. Organizing the varied forms of data is a challenge for any institute. This is particularly so in the present scenario of constantly changing technologies for data storage and retrieval. The funding agencies are making it mandatory to archive these datasets so that these can be preserved for the posterity and / or re-used by others. Libraries, as a part of the research institutes, seem to be well equipped to organize and manage these datasets. The author undertook the present study to find the level of involvement of libraries in ‘data management’ in India. A survey was done to assess the awareness about data curation, data archival policies, infrastructure required, technologies used, etc. The survey sample consisted of 15 national research / academic institutes in India. The study showed that libraries’ role in data management in research / academic institutes was still at a very early stage of development in India

    Digital Library Initiatives in PRL

Information Technology (IT) is most commonly used to mean computer technology and communication technology. The technologies of optical/video systems like CD-ROMs are also included in the computers group by the books and periodicals on computer technology. For a librarian IT has a wider connotation, which includes the technologies and systems like microfilms, microfiches, CD-ROM, computers, information networks, etc. It includes all those technologies which the libraries and information centres use for collection, processing storage, retrieval and dissemination of recorded information. Traditional libraries' budgets are devoting an ever increasing share of their funds to electronic services - CD ROMS, online access and OPACs. This trend will continue as digital storage costs go down relative to the cost of library shelf-space and as electronic services become more user-friendly, affordable and available. To meet its objectives, the PRL library has embarked on major initiatives to meet user needs, improve access to the collection and to resources beyond our own collection. It is our aim to develop and manage the collection for the benefit of our users today and for posterity, and to ensure that we function efficiently and effectively as a unified library. PRL library's major thrust areas have been: 1. Creating and maintaining a Digital Library 2. Electronic Journals : Achieving the optimum balance The main goal in developing DL is to provide the researchers at PRL, opportunities for accessing and using variety of information in highly flexible manner.Proceedings of the Sixth International Symposium on Electronic Theses and Dissertations, ETD2003, 20.05.2003 - 24.05.2003, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, pp 102-10

ETD for Preservation : A case study

Conferencia realizado del 12 al 14 de setiembre en Lima, Peru del 2012 en el marco del 15º Simposio Internacional de Tesis y Disertaciones Electrónicas (ETD 2012). Evento aupiciado por la Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM) y la Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas (UPC).One of the reasons that we know so little of ancient life is because much of written history of those times has been lost. We can only speculate what really happened. If only we had not lost all the treasures…If only we had preserved that knowledge somewhere else or in some other medium, then probably mankind need not have to start all over again re-discovering knowledge. The loss of knowledge is due to three reasons - Disasters, Media Deterioration, and Alternative Formats & Obsolete Technology A clear idea about what could be lost will only lead us to take precautionary steps or to lessen the damage. Within a library and information service (LIS), the most likely disasters are fire or flood, but those caused by wind, earthquakes and other natural phenomena can also happen. Acts of sabotage or terrorism may occur which can destroy, or seriously disrupt the LIS. And with more and more information being held in electronic format, computer disasters, whether caused by system failure or unauthorized access and hacking into files, are becoming more common. Information is necessarily recorded on some kind of medium. All media deteriorate over time, at different rates and for different reasons. When information is provided in alternative formats – for example microforms or digitized form - equipment for using them must not only be provided, but also kept maintained in good working condition. Preserving long-term access to digital information resources is one of the key challenges facing libraries and information centers today. The paper iterates what steps have been taken by Physical Research Laboratory, Library to overcome this challenge.Indi

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Several investigators have conducted bibliometric analysis of research productivity of different countries in the world. A few studies have also been carried out to assess the productivity and impact of a single institute. As no bibliometric study on Physical Research Laboratory, India has been done before, the researcher thought it appropriate to carry out the study for her doctoral research with the following objectives: To study the division wise output of research To identify the thrust areas of research at PRL The present bibliometric study aims to measure the research output of Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) during a 10 year period (1997-2006) using the data of papers published in journals. The content analysis of the articles published in journals and the use of PACS to allot keywords helped to identify the thrust areas of research carried out in PRL during 1997-2006. The study found that. 515 papers were published in subject field of Theoretical Physics (PACS 0-70), 57 papers were published in Interdisciplinary subject fields (corresponding to PACS number 80) and Geophysics, Astronomy and Astrophysics (PACS number 90) account for more than half of the total share of articles published in journals (746) during the ten year period in PRL. Further classification of these subject fields have indicated the thrust areas of research carried out in Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad. The researcher hopes that this information will be useful to the institute’s decision makers for future research planning

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
