    Prevalence, techniques and knowledge of rapid weight loss amongst adult british judo athletes: a questionnaire based study

    Background: No investigation has analysed the RWL approaches since new rules by the International Judo Federation (IJF) regarding weigh-ins have been implemented in international competitions in 2014. The current study analyses the prevalence, most common methods and knowledge surrounding the effects of rapid weight loss (RWL) amongst adult UK judo athletes. Additionally, it examines differences in rapid weight loss behaviour (RWLB) between gender, weight-class, competitive level, age RWL began and "high"/"low" knowledge athletes.Methods: A previously validated questionnaire developed to assess RWL in judo athletes was modified by adding a knowledge section and revalidated for content. The questionnaire provided a RWLB score (higher score equated to more aggressive RWL) and a knowledge score (out of 10). 256 athletes (189 males and 66 females, aged 18-67 years) completed the questionnaire between February and April 2015. Unpaired t test, one-way ANOVA-tests and Chi-squared tests were used to test differences of mean RWLB scores and prevalence between groups.Results: The prevalence of RWL was 84%. The most common methods of RWL were increased exercise and decreased food/fluid intake. The mean knowledge score was 6.2 +/- 2.8, with most incorrect answers regarding physiological effects of RWL. No significant differences in RWLB scores were found between gender, "high"/"low" knowledge athletes or weight-classes. Statistically significant differences in RWLB scores were found between different competitive levels (p=0.014) and age RWL began (p<0.01) in males but not in females.Conclusion: RWL is highly prevalent in the UK adult judo population and athletes have moderate knowledge surrounding its effects. In males, RWLB is most aggressive in elite level athletes and those that began RWL at a younger age. Therefore, updated rulings to target elite and youth level athletes should be implemented to reduce dangerous RWL

    Energy Expenditure in Professional Dance Sport

    The aim of the present study was to determine the intensity of each Standard and Latin-American dance in relation to the values of maximal oxygen uptake assessed by a dance-specific protocol. A total of 12 professional dancers (six couples: three Standard and three Latin-American; ranging in age from 18 to 29 years; six males and six females) were recruited from the Italian Dance Sport Federation. To measure energy expenditure, each couple performed progressively demanding routine dance sequences. Each sequence lasted for 1 minute and 30 seconds and was specific to each dance of the respective discipline (Standard and Latin-American) in terms of tempo and choreography. The energy consumption of the dancers was measured during the last 30 seconds of each dance and the total energy expenditure calculated. Recovery between dance sequences was reached when the oxygen consumption returned to near resting values. To assess the maximal oxygen uptake, an incremental dance-specific test was used. This test consisted of uninterrupted performance of the five dances specific to each dance of the respective discipline. Parametric techniques were used to detect significant differences in metabolic energy required between dances and genders. The alpha level of significance was set at p < 0.05. The metabolic energy required to perform the individual dances was maximal or greater than maximal in almost all specialties of DanceSport, except for male and female Standard in the English waltz and Latin-American females in the rumba. The energy expenditure measured during the last 30 seconds of each dance underestimated the metabolic energy requirement by 15% to 32% in Standard dances and 35% to 42% in Latin-American dances (p < 0.05)

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

    Evaluation of physical fitness in relation to performance and injury severity in contemporary dance

    A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of Wolverhampton for the degree of Doctor of PhilosophyDance has attracted little scientific interest on the effects of physical fitness improvements on performance and injury severity, particularly with respect to contemporary dance. The main aims of the current work were: a) to observe the physical demands of dance performance; b) to develop a reliable dance-specific performance tool; c) to assess the association between selected physical fitness parameters and performance in contemporary dance by using a new reliable method (AC test); d) to assess selected physical fitness parameters in relation to injury severity in contemporary dance; e) to study the effects of increased fitness parameters on performance through a randomized controlled trial. A total of 50 performances, performed by 20 dancers, were monitored by using a portable accelerometers (SWA armbands) and heart rate monitors while 45 performances in DVDs were video analysed. Six dancers and two dance teachers were recruited to test a newly developed performance tool. A sample made of 41 dancers were recruited and assessed for aerobic fitness (DAFT), lower body muscular power (jump height test), upper body muscular endurance (press-ups test), flexibility (active and passive hip ROM), body composition (skinfolds), performance (n=17) and injury severity (n=16). In order to investigate the effects of the supplementary fitness training on performance, 24 of the total 41 dancers, were randomly assigned to either an intervention (n=12) or control (n=12) group. The intervention group undertook a specifically designed exercise-training programme (circuit and WBV training) lasting six weeks. Both groups were re-tested for physical fitness levels and performance at the end of the intervention period. Results revealed that performance intensities varied from light to moderate while these were observed with the use of pliés and jumps as well as lifting other dancers. Based on the seven most frequently used criteria by selected pre-professional contemporary dance institutions and companies, a novel performance tool (AC tool) was developed with an inter-rater reliability of r=0.96. There was a significant correlation between aesthetic competence (AC) scores and jump ability (r=0.55) and press-ups (r=0.55), respectively. Stepwise backward multiple regression analysis revealed that the best predictor of AC was press-ups (R2=0.30, p=0.03, 95% confidence intervals=0.11–1.34). Univariate analyses also revealed that the interaction of press-ups and jump ability improved the prediction power of AC (R2=0.44, p=0.004, 95% confidence intervals=0.009–0.04). Pearson’s correlation coefficients detected significant negative correlations between the mean score recorded for injury severity (expressed as TDO) and lower body muscular power (r=-0.66; p=0.014); backward regression analysis also revealed that, from all studied parameters, the strongest predictor of TDO was lower body muscular power (p=0.014). For the intervention group repeated measures ANOVA revealed significant increases (pre vs. post) in aerobic fitness (p<0.05), lower body muscular power (p<0.05), upper body muscular endurance (p<0.05) and performance (p<0.05). Linear regression analyses indicated that the only significant predictor of AC was aerobic capacity (F=7.641; p=0.03); the interaction of press-ups and aerobic capacity (F=6.297; p=0.036), and lower body muscular power with aerobic capacity (F=5.543; p=0.05) demonstrated an improved prediction power. These results show that the observed contemporary dance performance is an intermittent type of activity of moderate intensity. Given the reliability of the AC tool, it is concluded that upper body muscular endurance and jump ability best predict AC of contemporary dancers. Reduced lower body muscular power is associated with increased severity of injuries. Finally, supplementary exercise training significantly increases lower body muscular power, upper body muscular endurance and aerobic fitness, which in turn are beneficial to improve AC of contemporary dancers
