Preprint of paper published in: 5th IEEE International Conference on Service-Oriented Computing and Applications (SOCA), 17-19 December 2012; doi:10.1109/SOCA.2012.6449440 Due to the loosely coupled and highly dynamic nature of service-oriented systems, the actual configuration of such system only fully materializes at runtime, rendering many of the traditional quality assurance approaches useless. In order to enable service systems to recover from and adapt to runtime failures, an important step is to detect failures and diagnose problematic services automatically. This paper presents a lightweight, fully automated, spectrum-based diagnosis technique for service-oriented software systems that is combined with a framework-based online monitor. An experiment with a case system is set up to validate the feasibility of pinpointing problematic service operations. The results indicate that this approach is able to identifySoftware Computer TechnologyElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc

The author gives his point of view on two taxa, Ophrys passionis and Ophrys exaltata subsp. marzuola, sometimes misinterpreted. O. exaltata subsp. marzuola is not recognized by Catalan authors who confuse it with O. sphegodes or O. arachnitiformis. O. passionis, described from Catalonia, has also long been considered either as a synonym for O. sphegodes subsp. garganica or a representative of the exaltata series. This study is the result of forty years of botanical surveys, the study of herbaria and related literature. It clarifies the taxonomy and distribution of these two taxa in Catalonia. Nonkin in older adults’ personal networks: more important among later cohorts?

    No full text
Objectives. Research on age-related changes in personal networks has found compelling evidence for socioemotional selectivity theory and exchange theory holding that older adults experience a decline in less emotionally close nonkin relations as they age. However, recent societal developments are likely to have increased the salience of nonkin relations. We hypothesize that age-related decline in the proportion of nonkin in personal networks has been delayed or is slower in late birth cohorts of older adults compared with earlier cohorts. Method. Seven observations by the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam covering a time span of 17 years since 1992 were analyzed using multilevel regression analysis. The sample had 12,949 person-year observations from 3,516 respondents born between 1908 and 1937. Results. Age-related decline in the proportion of nonkin is absent for cohorts born after 1922 and large for cohorts born in 1922 and before. Mediating variables for health and other resources did not explain cohort differences in age-related change. Discussion. The salience of nonkin relationships is likely to have increased due to societal changes, resulting in absence or delay of decline in later cohorts. The findings raise the need for a reevaluation of old age and the creation of new theoretical perspectives. © The Author 2013

For permissions, please e-mail: [email protected]: Natural disasters can have devastating, long-lasting effects on the mental health of older adults. However, few studies have examined associations among disaster exposure and positive and negative affect, and no longitudinal studies have investigated the extent to which predisaster perceived social support affects these associations. These analyses examine the associations among predisaster perceived social support, disaster exposure, and positive and negative affect experienced by community-dwelling older adults 4 years after Hurricane Sandy, controlling for predisaster affect. METHODS: Self-reported data collected before and after Hurricane Sandy from participants (aged 50-74 years) in the ORANJ BOWL panel (N = 2,442) were analyzed using linear regression models. RESULTS: Higher levels of peritraumatic stress experienced during Hurricane Sandy and greater hardship experienced after the storm were associated with more negative affect 4 years following the disaster. Higher perceived social support at baseline was related to more positive affect and less negative affect both before and after the hurricane. Social support did not moderate the effect of hurricane exposure on either positive or negative affect. DISCUSSION: Findings suggest that psychological effects may persist years after natural disasters and that more effective interventions may be needed during and after a disaster. While social support is critical to positive and negative affect in general, its buffering effects when disaster strikes may be limited

    What She Go Do

In the 1990s, expressive culture in the Caribbean was becoming noticeably more feminine. At the annual Carnival of Trinidad and Tobago, thousands of female masqueraders dominated the street festival on Carnival Monday and Tuesday. Women had become significant contributors to the performance of calypso and soca, as well as the musical development of the steel pan art form. Drawing upon ethnographic fieldwork conducted by the author in Trinidad and Tobago, this book demonstrates how the increased access and agency of women through folk and popular musical expressions has improved inter-gender relations and representation of gender in this nation. This is the first study to integrate all of the popular music expressions associated with Carnival—calypso, soca, and steelband music—within a single volume. The popular music of the Caribbean contains elaborate forms of social commentary that allows singers to address various sociopolitical problems, including those that directly affect the lives of women. In general, the cultural environment of Trinidad and Tobago has made women more visible and audible than any previous time in its history. This book examines how these circumstances came to be and what it means for the future development of music in the region.</p

Extracting Dynamic Dependencies between Web Services Using Vector Clocks

    No full text
Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) enables organizations to react to requirement changes in an agile manner and to foster the reuse of existing services. However, the dynamic nature of service oriented systems and their agility bear the challenge of properly understanding such systems. In particular, understanding the dependencies among services is a non trivial task, especially if service oriented systems are distributed over several hosts belonging to different departments of an organization. In this paper, we propose an approach to extract dynamic dependencies among web services. The approach is based on the vector clocks, originally conceived and used to order events in a distributed environment. We use the vector clocks to order service executions and to infer causal dependencies among services. We show the feasibility of the approach by implementing it into the Apache CXF framework and instrumenting the SOAP messages. We designed and executed two experiments to investigate the impact of the approach on the response time. The results show a slight increase that is deemed to be low in typical industrial service oriented systems.
