Procuring Innovative Solutions in the Dutch Construction Industry: A Guide to Facilitate Innovation in the Procurement process

    No full text
The Construction Industry is not known as a very innovative industry which is attributed to the heterogeneity of the product and the extensive use of traditional contracts (Konings & Lourens, 2004). By the introduction of integrated contracts and the Competitive Dialogue procedure this was intended to change. Theoretically, the change from traditional towards integrated and lifecycle contracts should facilitate more design freedom for contractors to come up with innovative solutions (CROW, 2015). However, practitioners indicate that this change does not provide the design freedom that contractors actually need to be innovative (Groot, Afrian, Hardeman, & Vrolijk, 2012; Nyström, Nilsson, & Lind, 2016). Based on these findings the ‘Marktvisie’ was provided by a cooperation of public clients and construction companies. One of the goals of the ‘Marktvisie’ is to enhance the room for innovative solutions in construction projects ("De Marktvisie," 2016). However, the ‘Marktvisie’ does not provide any guidance on how to achieve more room for innovation. Based on these observations the following problem definition is set: ‘The current procurement process is very rigid in nature and does not lend itself to the implementation of innovative solutions by construction contractors’...Civil Engineering | Construction Management and Engineerin

Schematization of shear strength: The influence of the schematization of the shear strength on the macro-stability safety assessment

    No full text
The Water Authority Rivierenland is responsible for periodically assessing the safety of the dike trajectories in the Alblasserwaard region. In 2012, the safety assessment for inner slope macro-stability was performed based on stress dependent design values for the shear strength, based on the cell testcollection of the Water Authority. The most recent assessment on the inner slope macro-stability of the Lekdijk has shown a significant deviation from the previous assessment. According to these results, large scale reinforcement works are requested. Before starting any additional soil investigation, the water authority is interested in investigating the sensitivity of the schematization of the shear strength. The transition from the cell test collection to the triaxial and direct simple shear test collection, and therefore the transition from using the Mohr-Coulomb calculation model to the SHANSEP formulation, is expected to have the most impact on the outcome of the macro-stability safety assessment. The influence of the two test collections on the macro-stability safety assessment is analyzed by using a D-Geo-Stability model from the previous safety assessment for one cross-section of the Lekdijk, and transferring the model to D-Stability. The D-Stability model with the cell test collection parameters and the Mohr-Coulomb shear strength calculation model can be adjusted to the triaxial and direct simple shear test collection with SHANSEP shear strength calculation model. The transition from drained to undrained modelling results in a decrease of the shear strength of the soil around the failure surface. Therefore, the transition from the previous to the new test collection has resulted in a lower safety factor in the macro-stability analysis, having a negative impact on the overall macro-stability safety assessment.Civil Engineering | Hydraulic Engineering | Hydraulic Structures and Flood Ris

Induction welding of high performance thermoplastic composites: Focused heat generation in weld zones of carbon fiber laminates by magnetic field manipulation and carbon fiber susceptors

    No full text
Mass reduction is one of the main drivers for aircraft design. A big potential for saving mass can be found in part joining. Currently, most parts are joined by mechanical fastening. However, mechanical fastening requires labor intensive work and results in a weight increase especially for composite parts that, due to the mass saving they allow, are increasingly used in the aerospace industry. Induction welding of thermoplastic composites shows great potential to limit this mass increase and it can vastly reduce the amount of work that is needed to join parts while improving the working conditions on the shop-floor. A characteristic of induction welding is that the heating rate goes down with increasing distance to the inductor. This often leads to fully melting the top plate across its thickness. This results in an imperfect weld as pressure is required for proper consolidation which leads to a damaged surface. Therefore, the challenge is to find a way to selectively heat the weld zone, without using a metallic susceptor that can lead to an unreliable joint. Accordingly, the aim of this thesis is to find how induction heating can be used to selectively heat the weld zone of multidirectional carbon fiber laminates with and without using a carbon fiber susceptor material. To this end, three sub-questions are answered. Can specific plies in multidirectional CFRP laminates be heated by manipulation of the magnetic field? Can a carbon fiber material be used as susceptor material in order to increase the temperature at the weld interface? Is it possible to weld parts with lightning strike protection? Using an infrared camera and fine wire thermocouples of type E to measure the temperature profile across the thickness of the test parts, a dependency of the heating rate on the orientation of the magnetic field was discovered for all parts that were tested. This dependency can indeed be used to selectively heat plies in a specific orientation within the laminate. Also, the possibility of using susceptors made of carbon fiber to increase the temperature at the weld zone was shown. To this end, susceptors were made of fabrics and of thin-ply material. Further research has to be done to improve these susceptor materials. An increase of the heating benefit they deliver could enable them to be used for more efficient welds in the future. Finally, by clamping lightning strike protection (LSP) onto the test parts, the temperature profile of parts with LSP was imitated. Striking was that the heat generated in the two CFRP parts went down when the LSP was added. No peak temperature was measured at the side of the LSP but this could probably be explained by the poor contact between the thermocouple in the test part and the LSP. It is recommended to further investigate this topic by consolidation of the LSP onto the test part.Aerospace Engineerin

Convective momentum transport in fine-scale weather forecasts over Cabauw

    No full text
In this study we are specifically interested in the role of convective momentum transport in a commercial fine-scale LES model that is used for wind predictions in the wind-energy sector. With this model, forced with the ECMWF IFS, a year-long of daily forecasts are run over Cabauw, the Netherlands, at a resolution of 40m in the horizontal and a resolution in the vertical of 8m that decreases with height to 80m. At this location atmospheric conditions range from stable to convective boundary layers, from clear sky to overcast days. The number of days with cumulus convection are surprisingly large: 144 out of 365 days.Focusing on daytime hours, we separate days with and without cumulus convection, and with small and large cloudiness. For these different categories we show how the normalised momentum flux, and what this implies for drag in the lowest kilometre of the atmosphere. Here we are mindful of differences in background winds between the categories. A similar exercise is performed by separating cumulus days on surface buoyancy flux and cloud depth; four groups of increasing convection have been obtained. It is found that in the presence of cumulus convection, the momentum transport is less linear than on overcast days. Clear-sky days show more drag in the lower half of the mixed layer compared to the cumulus case. Near cloud base, the drag is similar to that of cumulus days. Separating cumulus days on convection we found that with decreasing buoyancy flux, the normalised momentum transport behaves less linear: in general cumulus days with the largest convection showed linear behaviour in the sub-cloud layer, cumulus days with the lowest convection showed a profile that tends to increase the wind speed near the surface and shows drag near cloud base. Finally, using sensitivity experiments in which we remove the latent heating effect on buoyancy, we that the presence of moist convection specifically, change momentum mixing near and above cloud base, but not in the sub-cloud layer underneath. <br/

Healthy Hillesluis: Designing interventions for a healthier food environment in a low SES neighbourhood

    No full text
The current food system stimulates unhealthy food choices and is a major contributor to environmental pressures. To improve this situation, an integrated approach is necessary, where we take into account the different actors in the food environment and how each of these can contribute to a more healthy and sustainable society. Although change needs to happen on a world-wide scale, this project contributes by case studying a small piece of it: Hillesluis, a low SES neighbourhood in Rotterdam. Rotterdam is one of the most unhealthy cities in the Netherlands, and low socioeconomic status (SES) neighbourhoods have the highest priority for change as these low-income groups are more often exposed to and vulnerable to the conditions that are associated with poorer dietary outcomes. With more than 55% of the adults, and more than one in three kids being overweight, we can also see this trend in Hillesluis. The poor dietary intake of low-income groups can be presented as an outcome of a complex adaptive system that sustains a food environment that increases accessibility, availability, affordability and acceptability of unhealthy foods. In order to reshape system dynamics, simultaneous, diverse and innovative strategies are needed to facilitate improvement of availability, affordability, accessibility and acceptability of healthier food (Sawyer et al., 2021). To determine a suitable strategy, I studied the local food system in Hillesluis and discovered opportunities and barriers for progress. I did this through literature as well as field research. In the field, I met residents, food retailers and other stakeholders who were eager to contribute to a healthier neighbourhood. The design goal I derived from analysing the gained insights is as follows: “Design an experience that introduces families in Hillesluis to healthier cooking”.To pursue this design goal, I designed a combination of two interventions that together contribute to a healthier food environment in Hillesluis. The core of the concept is ‘De Familiekeuken’, a workshop series where parents and their children learn to cook healthier meals in a social setting, guided by a specialised chef. The goal is that acquired knowledge and skills are eventually implemented in their daily life and their cooking activities at home, so that a healthier diet is established. Besides the workshops, I also propose to increase the amount of physical stimuli of healthy food in the neighbourhood. Through the application of street art, people passing by can get inspired to open up the conversation about healthy food or to make a healthier choice today. Together, these interventions touch upon the different layers of the food environment and in that way increase the availability, accessibility, affordability and acceptability of healthy food. A first validation of the concept confirmed a positive intention towards implementation on the stakeholders’ side as well as enthusiasm for participation on the residents’ side. It is expected that this project and implementation of the concept will inspire actions towards a healthier food environment in Hillesluis. With the gained insights and solution I hope to inspire action in other low SES neighbourhoods as well.Strategic Product Desig

Off-site enhanced biogas production with concomitant pathogen removal from faecal matter

    No full text
Globally, 2.7 billion people are using onsite sanitation systems, particularly in low income, high density settlements (LIHDS) in urban areas of developing countries. However, treatment technologies to manage the faecal sludge (FS) generated from these systems are often not in place, leading to high risks for environmental and public health. The development of replicable and effective technologies for FS treatment is key in addressing this challenge. This research focused on development of an innovative FS stabilisation technology and addressed key constraints in anaerobic FS treatment: inadequate pathogen inactivation and limitations in biochemical energy recovery. The developed two-stage reactor system consists of an acidogenic reactor fed with mixtures of FS and market waste to facilitate pathogen inactivation, and a subsequent methanogenic plug-flow reactor for enhanced methane production. Due to its potential for application as an off-site FS treatment technology at any scale, receiving any type of faecal matter, collected from different types of sanitary systems, the system provides an option for FS stabilisation for LIHDS. Additionally, the research evaluated the limitations of sanitation provision in LIHDS, and proposes methods for creating an enabling environment for fullscale implementation of onsite systems. The presented results contribute to designing appropriate sanitation interventions in LIHDS.Sanitary Engineerin

SHOPEE DAN PEREMPUAN: Sebuah Tinjauan Sosio – Feminis terhadap Konstruksi Citra Perempuan melalui Iklan di Shopee

    No full text
Advertising is an effective tool for delivering messages quickly and simultaneously. As a result, advertising can be an effective way to perpetuate, sharpen, and shape the image of women. Through marketplaces like Shopee, the construction of women's images is often presented with specific standards that reflect social and economic demands. This phenomenon led the author to explore the socio-feminist construction of women's images through advertisements on Shopee. This research employs qualitative methods with a phenomenological and digital ethnographic approach. Through this approach, the author seeks to understand patterns and behaviors in the digital realm, particularly on Shopee, and to describe the experiences of active Shopee users in observing female advertisement models and the constructions produced and perpetuated through Shopee ads. This study highlights how advertising, especially on Shopee, plays a significant role in shaping and reinforcing women's images and identities through the mechanisms of gender performativity and psychological manipulation. Advertisements not only reflect existing social standards but also create illusions and pressures for women to meet certain beauty standards and gender roles. By using magical symbols and engaging narratives, advertisements manipulate women's desires and anxieties, making them feel that the advertised products are essential for achieving an ideal self-image and happiness. In short, advertising becomes a powerful tool in perpetuating gender stereotypes and social norms, which are then internalized by society as the "reality" that must be followe
