A short film discussion, Candra Aditya’s Dewi pulang
The author thanks all of those who reviewed and commented on the transcript and translation including Candra Aditya, Thomas Barker, Rosalia Namsai Engchuan, Verena Meyer, Judith Fox, Joseph Errington, and the three anonymous reviewers for BKI. A special debt of gratitude is owed to Amnina Fira Kharira and Yosephin Apriastuti Rahayu, who read and discussed the full transcript and translation with the author in detail. Any remaining errors, oversights, and infelicities are the author's own.Short films have proven an important medium for social commentary in contemporary Indonesia. As an example of the genre, this special issue of bki presents Candra Aditya’s (2016) short film, Dewi pulang (Dewi goes home), which follows a young Javanese woman as she travels from Jakarta to her natal home in Central Java to attend her father’s funeral. A critically annotated transcript and translation of the film’s dialogue is followed by four essays on various aspects of the film and a conversation with the filmmaker. Issues addressed include the changing nature of short films and ‘indie’ cinema in post-authoritarian Indonesia; the filmmaking practices specific to Dewi pulang; the interplay of absence and presence in Dewi’s movement between Jakarta and her natal home in Central Java; and the juxtaposition of Indonesian-, English- and Javanese language dialogue, and the forms of sociality they respectively embody. Taken as a whole, the special issue offers at once a window onto short filmmaking in Indonesia and new primary materials for further analysis.FacultyReviewe
Why don’t you get it? Reflections on language and the idea of (mis)understanding in Dewi pulang
This essay is a product of ongoing conversation with a small group of colleagues and friends. The author am particularly grateful to his little working group on Dewi pulang—including Candra Aditya, Thomas Barker, Rosalia Namsai Engchuan, and Verena Meyer. Special thanks are also due to those who read and commented on prior drafts, including Judith Fox, Amnina Fira Kharira, Mark Hobart, Yosephin Apriastuti Rahayu, Alicia Izharuddin, Tom Hunter, and the three anonymous reviewers for bki. All remaining errors, oversights, and infelicities are the author's own. This essay explores the relationship between language and mutual (mis)understanding in Candra Aditya’s short film Dewi pulang. The film follows Dewi, a young Javanese woman, as she travels from Jakarta to her natal home in Central Java to attend her father’s funeral. The tension between Dewi’s multiple and often conflicting obligations is marked by the use of language—from the colloquial Indonesian she speaks with her friends in Jakarta to a brief exchange with her English-speaking boss on the telephone and the various forms of Javanese employed ‘at home’. Drawing on examples in both Indonesian and Javanese, it is argued that the film’s use of language may be understood as a form of social commentary, reflecting critically on the complex and at times incongruous desires, expectations, and aversions at play in the lives of a growing number of young Indonesians.FacultyReviewe

want to know about fulfilling the rights of workers affected by the termination of
employment during the Covid-19 pandemic after the work copyright law came into
effect. The research uses a normative method, namely an approach to the problem
regarding the applicable laws and regulations, especially regarding employment—
data collection techniques through library research, namely collecting primary and
secondary legal materials. The study results a show that based on the two decisions
reviewed by the authors, there is still one decision that still needs to fulfill the rights
of workers affected by the termination of employment. The author suggests that

FACE COMPONENT EXTRACTION USING SEGMENTATION METHOD ON FACE RECOGNITION SYSTEM
Biometric technology has been frequently utilized by researchers in identifying
and recognizing human features. This technology identifies humans unique and
static body parts, such as fingerprints, eyes, and face. The face components
processing and analysis are used to identify and recognize a human face. A
number of researchers applies face component characteristic (eye, nose and
mouth) as a component for face recognition. Hsu applied three components e.g.
the distance between two eyes, the distance between right eye and mouth and
the distance between left eye and mouth. Zlávik and Chan also applied three
components e.g. the distance between two eyes, nose width and mouth width.
The result of the use of these three components was not good enough, resulted
from the change of component value when there exists a face expression.
The objectives of this research was to develop face recognition system through
three phases, firstly, localize the face image into face component that is eye,
nose and mouth; secondly, calculate the distance between face components, and
thirdly, is recognize the face using the eight components.
In this dissertation, eight components, instead of the three, were used. The
reason is based on the fact that for frontal face, position of nostril and distance
between two eyes will not change although there is a face expression. In this
research, the author proposes eight components : left eye - right eye, right eye -mouth, left eye - mouth, right eye - nose, left eye - nose, nose mouth distances,
plus nose height and nose width. The object used in this research is a frontal
single still image. Distances between components are measured, and then
combined with other components to identify the face image.
Test of uniqueness to150 Indonesian samples (Asian race) has succeeded. The
result indicated that eight face component distances give better result than the
previous one, which only applied three components distance. The uniqueness
increases from 93.33% to 100%. The test of uniqueness with eigenspace showed
the existence of different characteristic for every face image
Rwandan genocide conflict represented in the novel Led by Faith
This study discusses the ethnic conflict in the Rwandan genocide in the novel Led by Faith: Rising from The Ashes of Rwandan Genocide written by Immaculée Ilibagiza. The novel is set in Rwanda, the country that was known as the place of the fastest killing in the world history, within 100 days killed more than 800.000 people. This novel is based on the author’s experience in surviving from the Rwandan genocide.
Therefore, it is interesting to discuss how the author represented the genocide in the novel. This study applied conflict theory by Dahrendorf which focus on four aspect: Two aspects of society (conflict and consensus), power and authority, the groups involved in the conflict, and conflict and social change. The data are taken from the novel Led by
Faith by using descriptive analysis techniques. The study reveals that the conflict between Hutu and Tutsi ethnics was represented as the power dynamics among the authorities. The conflict influenced the social change and social structure of the Rwandan society
This research is motivated by the author's concern about traditional games that are rarely played, but with the presence of the Hong Community in the community, traditional games are preserved. This research is very important to research because of the lack of information related to the Hong Community. The purpose of this research is to find out the background of the establishment of the Hong Community in 2003, the factors that encourage and hinder the development of the Hong Community in preserving traditional Sundanese games in Bandung Regency 2003 - 2022, and the Hong Community's efforts in developing and preserving traditional Sundanese games in Bandung Regency. The author uses historical research methods according to Sjamsuddin including heuristics, criticism, and historiography. The results showed that first, Zaini's reason for establishing the Hong Community in 2003 was due to his concern about traditional games that were rarely played so he invited children around his house to play traditional games. Second, the supporting factors in the first five years of pioneering were the emergence of art studios, artists' concern, and creativity, while the inhibiting factors were the artists' economy and the absence of data, places, and raw materials for games. Six years later, Pakarangan Ulin Dago Pakar and Hong Pakarangan Nusantara Foundation were established, but on the other hand, public interest began to decrease. The next five years utilized social media and mass media and there was support from the government but unfortunately, the rise of online games made children leave traditional games. The last three years were constrained by Covid 2019 but in 2022 the Hong Community managed to revive. Third, the efforts made include the regeneration of members, introduction of traditional games, performance stages, Museum of Indonesian Games, digitization of traditional games, socialization, workshops, seminars, and webinars
