Proximity as space of opportunity: connecting people, productions and territories

    No full text
The paper presents the work of the Advanced Design Research Unit (ADU), currently involved in the experimentation of new services and products, able to face territorial issues coupling a proximity approach with a global perspective, contributing locally to the achievement of SDGs of EU Agenda 2030. This approach applied to the research and educational fields allow designing new solutions for local/global challenges (new flows of people, light reindustrialization, urban voids emergency, resources’ scarcity) in more imaginative, inclusive and sustainable ways. ADU learning and research structure is based on a quadruple helix approach to connect R&I, enterprises, PAs and communities. The synergies between design education and the productive environment of the Emilia-Romagna Region is strengthened by the launch of the new Research Center for Interaction with Cultural and Creative Industries, to define research lines and open design perspectives oriented to guide the dynamics of a responsible and cross-sectorial society

Detection of an East European wolf haplotype puzzles mitochondrial DNA monomorphism of the Italian wolf population

    No full text
Southern European wolves suffered from reiterated population declines during glacial periods and historically due to human persecution. Differently from other European wolf populations, a single mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region haplotype (W14) has been so far described in the Italian wolves, although no intensive genetic sampling has ever been conducted in historical source populations from central and southern Italy. Using non-invasive genetic techniques, we report the occurrence of an unexpected mtDNA haplotype (W16) in the wolf population of the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park (PNALM), central Italy. This haplotype, detected in three out of 90 faecal samples from the PNALM, was previously reported in wolves from the North Carpathians, Slovakia and the Balkans only. Microsatellite analysis and molecular sex determination confirmed that the W16 samples belonged to three distinct wolves. Although alternative explanations can be formulated for the origin of this mtDNA haplotype in the otherwise monomorphic Italian wolf population, assignment procedures indicated the likely admixed ancestry of one W16 sample with East European wolves. Anthropogenic introgression with dogs has been detected in the Italian wolf population using nuclear DNA microsatellites, but no population-wide genetic survey had previously reported a mtDNA control region variant in Italian wolves. Our findings strongly suggest that, in addition to wolf x dog hybridization, captive-released wolves or wolf x dog hybrids may successfully interbreed with wolves in the wild, and that human-mediated introgression may occur even in well established protected areas. Genetic composition of green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) at coastal feeding areas of Uruguay

The highly migratory and marine nature of species such as green sea turtles(Chelonia mydas) may hinder understanding of basic life history and impactensuing management and conservation applications across their full range. Toelucidate the linkages between juvenile green turtles foraging in coastal waters ofUruguay in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean to their future nesting or feedinggrounds, this study investigated their genetic composition . A total of 201 tissuesamples were collected from turtles that had stranded or were intentionallycaptured for scientific research along the Uruguayan coast (ca. 33°–35°S) duringtwo sampling periods (2003–2005 and 2009–2014). Samples were pooled foranalysis. Twelve mitochondrial control region haplotypes and ten subhaplotypeswere identified, all of which had been previously detected at Atlantic orCaribbean nesting beaches. Mixed Stock Analysis revealed that most turtlestraced to the Ascension Island rookery, representing a substantial connectionto the remote mid-Atlantic island thousands of kilometers distant. Other nestingareas, such as Guinea Bissau in Africa and Trindade Island in Brazil, representedless significant sources. There was no significant temporal or spatial geneticstructure within Uruguayan waters, suggesting dispersion along this coast.Despite the geographic distance from the nesting beach, the significantconnection to the Ascension Island rookery underscores the importance ofconsidering rookery population size and ocean current influences inunderstanding source contributions. These findings emphasize the need forconservation efforts, including the maintenance of existing protected areas andthe creation of new ones, to ensure the long-term conservation of green turtlesconnected to various nesting colonies and feeding grounds.Fil: Prosdocimi, Laura. Irmã. Trasformare la riabilitazione del pavimento pelvico attraverso un design inclusivo e consapevole

    No full text

Design culture:from product to process. Building a network to develop design processes in Latin countries

    No full text
The essay presents the results of a 2 years survey within 7 European and Latin American countries (Italy, Portugal, Spain, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico), focusing on the scientific and professional initiatives accomplished by universities and research centres in the field of designdriven innovation. The survey shows a growing interest towards the methodological aspects of design by the observed actors and urges the formation of a "Latin network" aimed at experimenting proper design processes for Latin countries' socio-cultural and productive systems. The basic idea is that design culture, considered as a process culture, has relevant advantages in the actual relationship between production and consumption: − Offering design a mediator's role between the crucial knowledge for sustainable development: economy, art/creativity, technology and humanities; − Producing a "phantasmagoric" capacity (the possibility to visualize and share what is immaterial and upcoming); − Mediating between the productive and consumption systems' interest
