No full textIn the last three decades, more or less, ethnography, that was long thought to be simple, turned into a complicated concept. At least for anthropologists, as is clearly demonstrated by the dense reflection and the vivid discussion that emerged about ethnography inside the anthropological academic community. Ethnographic practice, ethnographic theory, and ethnographic writing are not at all an easy and epistemologically plain activity. The Introduction aims to underline the common line of this edited volume that ethnography is strongly connected with a sophisticated theoretical reflection and strongly linked with cultural and social anthropology. Outside this frame, ethnography is nothing, and worthless are also the forms of knowledge one may expect to obtain by a naive use of a so-called “ethnographic method.

Making the Invisible Ethnography Visible: The Peculiar Relationship Between Italian Anthropology and Feminism
No full textThe gender ethnography such as feminist anthropology is a textbook case of invisibility in Italy. The contemporary anthropological analysis has focused on deconstruction to unveil the mechanisms of power and the dynamics of the social hierarchy. In this sense, cultural anthropology would have had to acquire the commitment and reflexivity of gender and feminist ethnography without hiding them or relegating them into “dedicated texts.” Why are anthropologists such as Denise Paulme, Germaine Tillion, Michelle S. Rosaldo, Louise Lamphere, Nicole-Claude Mathieu, Gayle Rubin, Marilyn Strathern, Henrietta Moore, and Lila Abu-Lughod less famous than Bronislaw Malinowki, Edward Evan Evans-Pritchard, Marcel Griaule, Claude Lévi-Strauss, and Clifford Geertz? This chapter proposes the reconstruction of some of these exemplary ethnographies to bring them to the heart of the history of Italian anthropology. The author answers to the question if an Italian anthropology of women and a feminist ethnography exist and if it is visible. The author tries to understand if the ethnographies examined in this chapter has considered the international debate, knowing that the Anglo American positions do not overlap with the French ones. Finally, if there has been, conversely, an Italian case able to affect the national and/or international debate

No full textThis paper will focus on the cultural representations of the present economic crisis in young people living in Lombardy. It is based on the data gathered through 700 questionnaires administered to high-school senior students in that region during school year 2013/2014, as well as on 75 in-depth interviews with young people aged 18-31 living in Milan.Using those data concerning, on the one hand, young people considering whether to continue their study and, on the other hand, young people who completed their formal education and are now facing up to a challenging labour market, this paper puts forward some observations on “growing up in times of uncertainty”, i.e. on how the new generations represent their own future and their responsibility in making change possible.</p
La responsabilità di esser-ci : I dilemmi etici della ricerca in antropologia applicata
No full textLa dimensione etica assume una centralità ineludibile in antropologia applicata, ambito in cui costituisce l’ossatura stessa della ricerca:
- nella decisione, definizione e costruzione dell’oggetto di studio;
- nelle diverse modalità di fare ricerca, di accedere e partecipare alla vita delle comunità e di rapportarsi agli interlocutori sul campo;
- nella gestione dei conflitti e dei molteplici condizionamenti esterni, politici ed economici;
- nella restituzione dei dati attraverso la scelta di temi, linguaggi, strategie testuali.
In tutte queste fasi la posizione del ricercatore, ben lontano dall’essere oggettiva, neutra, ovvia, è sempre il prodotto di un’intenzionalità conoscitiva – fatta di pre-comprensioni, aspettative, pregiudizi, investimenti personali e professionali – carica di implicazioni etiche, non sempre facilmente prevedibili e controllabili. In quanto tale l’essere sul campo è sempre un essere compromessi ed essere esposti e la sua restituzione attraverso la scrittura un atto politico forte. Quella che varia però è la consapevolezza e l’attenzione rivolta alle condizioni grazie alle quali la descrizione dell’oggetto di studio diventa possibile e quindi la sensibilità alla qualità della relazione che riusciamo a instaurare sul campo, alla responsabilità di esser-ci, così come la capacità di rendere i lettori – i destinatari – partecipi di questo complicato intreccio di fattori. Stimolare questa sensibilità e questa capacità è uno degli obiettivi che si prefiggono i contributi di questo numero
“Ethnography in France”: Ethnographic Practices and Theories in Marcel Griaule Between the Empirical and Rhetorical
No full textThe chapter explores how ethnography in France—a relatively neglected scholarly practice till the late twenties—developed and was actually practiced and conceptualized during the two world wars up to the late fifties, when Marcel Griaule published his now classic Méthode de l’Ethnographie (1957), the first ethnographic handbook available in French. The chapter highlights how the idea of ethnography of Marcel Griaule was really variable and contingent, going from a documentary ethnography, to a semi dialogical and exegetical ethnography—as it emerges from the famous Conversation with Ogotemmeli—, to a new redefinition of ethnography as judiciary inquiry, as it was strongly expressed in Méthode. corresponds to the ADI-ARfD for the general population. The establishment of limit values according to this strategy allows performing risk assessment in the pesticide workers and in the general population by exploiting the capability of modern analytical approaches to the targeted measurement of trace chemicals in biological specimens
