Myxozoan pathogens in cultured Malaysian fishes. I. Myxozoan infections of the sutchi catfish Pangasius hypophthalmus in freshwater cage cultures

    No full text
Cage-cultured sutchi catfish Pangasius hypophthalmus (Sauvage, 1878), a favourite food fish in Southeast Asia, proved to be infected by 6 myxozoan species. Three species belonged to the genus Hennegoides (H. berlandi, H. malayensis, and H. pangasii), 1 to Henneguya (H. shariffi) and 2 to Myxobolus (M. baskai, and M. pangasii). Five myxozoans infected the gills and 1 was found on the spleen. Myxozoans infecting the gills were characterised by a specific site selection. H. shariffi sp. n. and H. berlandi sp. n. formed plasmodia in the multi-layered epithelium of the gill filaments. Of the 2 vascular species H. pangasii sp. n. developed in the gin arteries, while M. baskai sp. n. infected the capillary network of the gill lamellae. Plasmodia of H. malayensis sp. n. were found inside the cartilaginous gill rays of the filaments. Large plasmodia of M. pangasii sp. n. were located in a groove of the spleen but they affected only the serosa layer covering the spleen

Safe City Program was launched in Malaysia two decades ago. It aims to realize a safe living environment for city dwellers. However, little evidence is found to assess its effectiveness, and decision-makers lack evidence in furthering such urban policy. Taking the case study of Taman Sungai Chua, Kajang, Selangor, this study intends to fill in such a gap by assessing residents’ perception of the effectiveness of the safe city programme. The method used in this study is questionnaire surveys involving 122 respondents. The survey items largely related to the physical aspects of a residential area, i.e., built environment, and layout design. The collected data were analyzed through descriptive statistical analysis. The findings showed that the level of security in the Sungai Chua housing area as a place to live is at a moderate level. The gridiron layout design has influenced the occurrence of crime. Suggestions to sustain the safe city program in Taman Sungai Chua include building defensive boundaries, i.e., installing fences around the house, limiting the gridiron housing layout design – high level of access to restricted access; and increasing surveillance qualities, i.e., placing guard houses, installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) and lights for good lighting at night. This study has contributed a case evident in assessing the safe city programme in Malaysia. This finding would add insights for the decision-makers and residents in dealing with crime in residential areas

    No full text

Higher order spectra based support vector machine for arrhythmia classification

    No full text
Heart rate variability (HRV) refers to the regulation of the sinoatrial node, the natural pacemaker of the heart by the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches of the autonomic nervous system. HRV analysis is an important tool to observe the heart’s ability to respond to normal regulatory impulses that affect its rhythm. Like many bio-signals, HRV signals are non-linear in nature. Higher order spectral analysis (HOS) is known to be a good tool for the analysis of non-linear systems and provides good noise immunity. A computer-based arrhythmia detection system of cardiac states is very useful in diagnostics and disease management. In this work, we studied the identification of the HRV signals using features derived from HOS. These features were fed to the support vector machine (SVM) for classification. Our proposed system can classify the normal and other four classes of arrhythmia with an average accuracy of more than 85%

Cardiac health diagnosis using higher order spectra and support vector machine

    No full text
The Electrocardiogram (ECG) is an important bio-signal representing the sum total of millions of cardiac cell depolarization potentials. It contains important insight into the state of health and nature of the disease afflicting the heart. Heart rate variability (HRV) refers to the regulation of the sinoatrial node, the natural pacemaker of the heart by the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches of the autonomic nervous system. The HRV signal can be used as a base signal to observe the heart's functioning. These signals are non-linear and non-stationary in nature. So, higher order spectral (HOS) analysis, which is more suitable for non-linear systems and is robust to noise, was used. An automated intelligent system for the identification of cardiac health is very useful in healthcare technology. In this work, we have extracted seven features from the heart rate signals using HOS and fed them to a support vector machine (SVM) for classification.\ud \ud Our performance evaluation protocol uses 330 subjects consisting of five different kinds of cardiac disease conditions. We demonstrate a sensitivity of 90% for the classifier with a specificity of 87.93%. Our system is ready to run on larger data sets
