The cowboy comes out of the closet: questions on sexuality and national identity in the film Brokeback Mountain
This thesis discusses the film Brokeback Mountain (2005, directed by Ang Lee) under the light of studies on sexuality and on national identity. The film, which won important awards and was acclaimed by the great public, has brought around great controversy as well, to the extent that it depicts cowboys holding homosexual practices. The thesis examines how the film, although may look conservative by the fact that the men never come out of the closet and by its unhappy ending, still promotes agency to extent that it brings what Judith Butler calls parodic performativity. Moreover, there is also a discussion on how the film, by bringing the subversion of the myth of the cowboy through homosexuality, represents the queering of US national identity imagined with its basis on such myth
Architecture in tension: an examination of the position of the architect in the private and public sectors, focusing on the training and careers of Sir Basil Spence (1907-1976) and Sir Donald Gibson (1908-1991)
In the early 1900s tensions began to appear within the architectural profession,
as private practitioners struggled to deal with the implications of professional
colleagues moving into public sector employment. Sir Basil Spence and Sir
Donald Gibson began their architectural training in the mid-1920s and, as
tensions between the sectors intensified, Spence entered private practice and
Gibson chose to enter the public sector. Each became an exemplar of his
chosen sector of the profession and yet both have, until recently, escaped
critical attention. The tensions between the public and private sectors of the
profession have been acknowledged within the historiography, but not received
detailed analysis.
This thesis advances the current historiography by presenting an examination
of the division between the sectors, focusing on the relationship between the
RIBA and the public sector union AASTA and assessing the influence of
AASTA on Gibson's Coventry City Architect's Department.
Through an examination of archival material, contemporary published material,
and buildings, this thesis builds on the work of the Sir Basil Spence Archive
Project, adding detailed accounts of his early life, architectural training, and
RIBA presidency, presenting new information and correcting certain aspects of
the accepted historiography. It likewise presents new information on Gibson's
early life and training and his central role in achieving improved status and
representation for the public sector. An analysis of selected projects provides a
comparative study of their contrasting approaches to architecture: the
technically informed, collaborative team-work of Gibson and the individual
artistry of Spence.
Both men played pivotal roles in reforming the RIBA and in changing public and
professional perceptions of the architect, nevertheless, the long lineage and
complex nature of tensions within the profession meant that the public/private
division was never be bridged and issues of status and representation
remained essentially immutable
Donald Hall, 11th Annual ODU Literary Festival
Donald Hall is not only one of our most prolific writers (six new books in 1987 alone, two more so far in 1988), but is perhaps the leading American person of letters. He is the author of ten books of poetry, beginning with Exiles and Marriages (winner of the Lamont Prize in 1955) and including Kicking the Leaves (1978) and most recently The Happy Man, which won the Lenore Marshall/The Nation Award as best book of poems for 1986; The Bone Ring, a play in verse (1987); and The One Day, a poem in three parts (1988). His sixteen books of prose cover a wide range of subjects: String Too Short To Be Saved is about growing up on—and saying what he thought then was a final farewell to—his grandparents\u27 subsistence farm in New Hampshire (1961); Seasons at Eagle Pond is about living now on that same farm (1987); Remembering Poets contains his reminiscences about T. S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, Dylan Thomas and Robert Frost (1978); Goatfoot Milktongue Twinbird (1978), The Weather for Poetry (1982) and Poetry and Ambition (1988) are about poetry and poetics; two other books are about sports: Dock Ellis in the Country of Baseball (1976) and Fathers Playing Catch With Sons (1985). At least three of his plays have been produced. Hall is also a busy editor, with seventeen additional titles to his credit. And finally, he is the author of four children\u27s books, including The Ox Cart Man, which won the Caldecott Award in 1980. In 1975, at the age of forty-seven, he resigned his Professorship of English at the University of Michigan and returned to Eagle Pond Farm to write full time; since then he has published sixteen books and edited six others (not counting new editions of older books). He seems able to grow with each new book
Quantifying the Effect of Water Temperature, Soap Volume, Lather Time, and Antimicrobial Soap as a Factor in the Removal of Escherichia coli ATCC 11229 from Hands
The handwashing literature, while extensive, often contains conflicting data and key variables are understudied or not studied at all. Some handwashing recommendations are made without scientific support, and there is limited agreement between recommendations. The influence of key variables including soap volume, lather time, water temperature, and product formulation on hand wash efficacy was investigated. Baseline conditions were 1 mL of a bland (nonantimicrobial) soap, a 5 s lather time, and 38 °C (100 °F) water temperature. A nonpathogenic strain of Escherichia coli ATCC 11229 served as the challenge microorganism. Twenty volunteers (10 men, 10 women) participated in the study and each test condition had 20 replicates. An antimicrobial soap formulation (1% chloroxylenol, or PCMX) was not significantly different from the bland soap at removing E. coli under a variety of test conditions. Overall, the antimicrobial soap used in this study had a mean 1.94 log CFU reduction (range 1.83 to 2.10 mean log reduction), and bland soap had a mean 2.22 log CFU reduction (range 1.91 to 2.54 mean log CFU reduction). Overall, lather time did significantly influence efficacy in one scenario, in which a 0.5 greater log reduction was observed for a 20 s with bland soap compared to the baseline wash (P=0.020). Water temperature as high as 38°C (100°F) vs. a low of 15°C (60°F) did not have a significant effect on the reduction of bacteria during hand washing, however this resulted in an energy usage difference between the temperatures. No significant differences were observed between mean log reductions of men and women (men= 2.08 mean log reduction, women=2.08 mean log reduction, P=0.988). A large part of the variability in the data observed was between the volunteers. Understanding what behaviors and human factors influence hand washes the most may help future studies find which techniques can optimize the effectiveness of a hand wash.Peer reviewe
Quantitative risk assessment of Listeria monocytogenes in traditional Minas cheeses: the cases of artisanal semi-hard and fresh soft cheeses
This study estimated the risk of listeriosis from Brazilian cheese consumption using quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA). Risks associated to consumption of two cheese types were assessed: artisanal ripened semi-hard cheese (produced with raw milk) and refrigerated fresh soft cheese (produced with pasteurized milk). The semi-hard cheese model predicted Listeria monocytogenes growth or decline during ripening, while the soft cheese model predicted pathogen growth during refrigerated storage. Semi-hard cheese modeling scenarios considered L. monocytogenes starting concentration from -2.4 to 6 log CFU/mL in raw milk and three ripening times (4, 22 and 60 days). Soft cheese modeling scenarios considered L. monocytogenes starting concentration from -2.4 to 4 log CFU/mL in milk. The inclusion of anti-listerial lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in cheeses was also examined. Risk of listeriosis due to consumption of soft cheese was 6,000 and 190 times greater than that of semi-hard cheese, for general and vulnerable populations, respectively. Aging semi-hard cheese reduced risk, and risk was influenced by L. monocytogenes starting concentration. Aging cheese with inhibitory LAB for 22 days reduced risk over 4 million-fold when L. monocytogenes was assumed to be 6 log CFU/mL in raw milk. The inclusion of inhibitory LAB also reduced risk of listeriosis due to soft cheese consumption, but not as much as for semi-hard cheese. QMRA results predicted that consumption of contaminated cheeses can carry a high risk of listeriosis, especially for vulnerable populations. Scenario analyses indicated that aging of semi-hard cheese and inclusion of antimicrobial LAB mix in semi-hard and soft cheeses are effective risk mitigation measures.Peer reviewe
