These notes are based on a lecture course given by the first author in the Sedano Winter School on K-theory held in Sedano, Spain, on January 22-27th of 2007. They aim at introducing K-theory of C*-algebras, equivariant K-homology and KK-theory in the context of the Baum-Connes conjectur

Ruben Radica, skladateljska teorija vs skladateljstvo

RUBEN RADICA (1931) completed his studies of conducting (1957, S. Zlatic) and composition (1958, M. Kelemen) at Zagreb Music Academy after which he specialized in Siena (V. Frazzi), Paris (R. Leibowitz, T. Aubin, 0. Messiaen) and Darmstadt (Gy. Ligeti, P. Boulez, H. Pousseur). He wrote his first works in the early 1950s, when he decided on a modern music idiom. Radica\u27s idea of music is visible in every composition in a different way - new techniques of composition are what he searched for throughout all his life in order to find and resolve the problem of modem music. "Each author has his own system; a step further would be for each composition to have its own system," - that is the starting point of Radica\u27s creative work. The system is directly connected with the extramusical idea which expresses the need for a balance between the emotional and the rational. It synthesizes his personal struggle to conquer music and the general idea of humanity and transcendency

Slippage Effects of the Conservation Reserve Program: New Evidence from Satellite Imagery

The Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) is the largest land retirement program ever operated in the US. Since its inception in 1985, many researchers have studied the impacts of this program; however, only a few have analyzed how the CRP affects surrounding non–enrolled parcels. In this research I examine how the CRP may affect the conversion of non–cropped land to agriculture, a phenomenon referred to as “slippage” in the literature, and specifically addressed by Wu (2000) and Roberts and Bucholtz (2005). Building on these earlier studies, I empirically model slippage using data derived from satellite imagery that provides information on land cover changes between 1992 and 2001. The study area consists of 1,053 counties located in the Northern Plains, Corn Belt and Lake States regions. Results support the existence of slippage effects from the CRP, but they are more conservative than the ones found by Wu (2000). The evidence of slippage provided here is important information for planners, given that whether and how the CRP affects land use decisions in surrounding areas is key information for implementing conservation efforts more efficiently.CRP, Land use change, Satellite imagery, Slippage effect, Agricultural and Food Policy, Land Economics/Use, Q15, Q24,

Knowledge sharing on Q&A fora: challenges of automated interaction analysis

    No full text
Q\&A fora have developed into a precious tool for online knowledge exchange. Being community-driven, openly accessible and free, getting an answer to a complicated question can nowadays be a matter of minutes. This research investigates the specific case of gis.stackexchange, a technical Q&A forum used by Geographic Information Systems professionals. A central topic is the interaction between users. Based on existing research, an automated approach is elaborated and a big data analysis is performed. Also, a link between the outcomes and self-reflective behaviour found on the community meta forum is established. Factors positively influencing interaction as defined by the approach are identified (implication of the author(s), presence of images and code snippets). Furthermore, weaknesses such as the low share of interactions associated to an alteration (of the original post) are also discussed. These outcomes eventually lead to a series of recommendations for the forum itself and related formats.Applied Sciences | Science Communicatio

This dissertation investigates events related to Brazil#s 500 years celebrations, which happened in 2000: Porto Seguro party, Brazil Rediscovery Exhibition and one of its modules, #Black in body and Soul# Exposition. The analysis involves the interface among art, politics and power, specifically articulated in the celebration context. It is based on narrative re-construction, considering the inclusion and exclusion of several discursive genres (visual, textual and sonorous), about the acting and interaction between different instances in the events: State, Press, Intellectuals and Public
