A Postcolonial Theology of Life: Planetarity East and West
We have here nothing less than a theology of life—life in the intensity of its postcolonial ecology, rippling through the creaturely interconnections of our planetary process, yet at the same time grounded in the beautiful local metaphors of an Asian counter-history. Jea Sophia Oh’s luminous book is a must-read for all who care about the global socio-ecology, about process theology, about eco-femnism, about comparative theology—singly and together. —Catherine Keller, author of On the Mystery and Face of the Deep.https://digitalcommons.wcupa.edu/cvpafaculty_books/1023/thumbnail.jp

A New Biased Proportional Navigation Guidance for Decelerating Targets
This paper aims to suggest a new type of biased proportional navigation guidance (PNG) for a target that undergoes a considerable deceleration during a homing engagement. To this end, the exact collision course between the missile and the target is first determined. This condition is given by a function of the time-varying speed of the target until the interception. The above interception condition is relaxed by utilizing the concept of average speed. Finally, the proposed law is realized in a way of achieving that condition, using the idea of biased PNG. We discuss the characteristics and implementation issues of the proposed approach. We validate the performance of the proposed algorithm using numerical simulations. © 2022, The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd
Retina-attached slice recording reveals light-triggered tonic GABA signaling in suprachiasmatic nucleus
© 2021, The Author(s).Light is a powerful external cue modulating the biological rhythm of internal clock neurons in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN). GABA signaling in SCN is critically involved in this process. Both phasic and tonic modes of GABA signaling exist in SCN. Of the two modes, the tonic mode of GABA signaling has been implicated in light-mediated synchrony of SCN neurons. However, modulatory effects of external light on tonic GABA signalling are yet to be explored. Here, we systematically characterized electrophysiological properties of the clock neurons and determined the spatio-temporal profiles of tonic GABA current. Based on the whole-cell patch-clamp recordings from 76 SCN neurons, the cells with large tonic GABA current (>15 pA) were more frequently found in dorsal SCN. Moreover, tonic GABA current in SCN was highly correlated with the frequency of spontaneous inhibitory postsynaptic current (sIPSC), raising a possibility that tonic GABA current is due to spill-over from synaptic release. Interestingly, tonic GABA current was inversely correlated with slice-to-patch time interval, suggesting a critical role of retinal light exposure in intact brain for an induction of tonic GABA current in SCN. To test this possibility, we obtained meticulously prepared retina-attached SCN slices and successfully recorded tonic and phasic GABA signaling in SCN neurons. For the first time, we observed an early-onset, long-lasting tonic GABA current, followed by a slow-onset, short-lasting increase in the phasic GABA frequency, upon direct light-illumination of the attached retina. This result provides the first evidence that external light cue can directly trigger both tonic and phasic GABA signaling in SCN cell. In conclusion, we propose tonic GABA as the key mediator of external light in SCN.11Nsciescopu
Make a Black Life, and Bid It Sing: Sacred Song in The Life, History, and Unparalleled Sufferings of John Jea
Scholarship on the American-born Afro-British author John Jea (c. 1773–after 1817) has focused on his c. 1816 autobiography. Scholars have examined Jea's life a sailor, his literacy, his opposition to slavery, and his indifference to dependent or marginalized people, whether free or enslaved. This essay argues that Jea's 1816 Collection of Hymns should be read as a companion to his memoir. When the two books are read together, scholars gain a clearer insight into his opposition to slavery and his empathy with seemingly lowly people, including black Christians in evangelical churches.</p

Pharmacogenetics of ophthalmic topical β-blockers
Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness worldwide. The primary glaucoma risk factor is elevated intraocular pressure. Topical β-blockers are affordable and widely used to lower intraocular pressure. Genetic variability has been postulated to contribute to interpersonal differences in efficacy and safety of topical β-blockers. This review summarizes clinically significant polymorphisms that have been identified in the β-adrenergic receptors (ADRB1, ADRB2 and ADRB3). The implications of polymorphisms in CYP2D6 are also discussed. Although the candidate-gene approach has facilitated significant progress in our understanding of the genetic basis of glaucoma treatment response, most drug responses involve a large number of genes, each containing multiple polymorphisms. Genome-wide association studies may yield a more comprehensive set of polymorphisms associated with glaucoma outcomes. An understanding of the genetic mechanisms associated with variability in individual responses to topical β-blockers may advance individualized treatment at a lower cost
Author, author: the complex relationship between copyright, authorship and the media release
Ownership and authorship of created works have long been assumed to belong to the originators of the work. However the practicality of authorship and ownership may be very different. This paper consider the ideologies of Kant, Locke, Baurillard, Marx and others to discuss the ownership and authorship question in the very practical context of media release usage by news journalists. It raises these topics against the very important framework of Copyright ownership, drawing together the complex, yet inter-related, fields of Copyright law, authorship, the role public relations and the news media. In doing this it delivers a unique and, at times, provocative perspective about current communication practice and third party authorship.Arts, Education & Law Group, School of Humanities, Languages and Social SciencesNo Full Tex
