Codifying Capital: Legal Power, Racial Hierarchy, and the Gendered Dynamics of Law

    No full text
This paper analyzes how law operates as a structuring force within racial capitalism by applying Austin Turk\u27s law as power framework. It explores how legal institutions not only reflect but actively reproduce racial and gender hierarchies through their functions. Drawing from foundational work by Cedric Robinson, W.E.B. Du Bois, Angela Harris, Kimberlé Crenshaw, and others, this paper defines racial capitalism as a system in which economic exploitation is inseparable from racial and gender domination. The first section contextualizes the emergence of racial capitalism and its intersection with gender, emphasizing how bodies are commodified and governed through legal regimes. The core analysis maps Turk\u27s five forms of legal power: police/violence, political, economic, ideological, and diversionary, onto case studies, policies, and legal doctrines. From prison systems to affirmative action discourse and civil court structures, the paper demonstrates how law sustains systems of expropriation and legitimizes inequality under the guise of neutrality. By bridging sociolegal theory and critical race scholarship, the work promotes questioning the presumed objectivity of legal institutions and highlights the importance of law in codifying the logic of capital. Ultimately, the paper showcases research that works to confront the racial capitalist order, and how legal scholars must reframe law not as an impartial arbiter but as an instrument of power shaped by historical and material forces

Green grow the rushes : a novel

    No full text
This is a novel about adversity. The story is about one family; it is told primarily but not exclusively through the voice of one child in the family, the oldest girl, Rachel. Rachel is nine when the story opens. This primary voice reaches the reader through a series of notes written by Rachel directly to the reader. Of the thirteen chapters, eight are through Rachel\u27s notes and one (the last chapter) is by way of a letter from Rachel to her sister, Iva. The other four chapters are told by three other family members and an omniscient observer. The author has chosen to stay with the one voice more than any other so there is consistency and continuity throughout. Also, the focus on one voice gives the reader the impression that he or she shares something very personal with Rachel, not only the secret of her notes, but the secret she reveals in her notes--the tragedy of family violence. All the chapters outside the Rachel chapters (with the possible exception of Eyes of Iva ) can stand alone as short stories in their own right. All of the Rachel chapters, including the letter at the end, can be combined and make a short novel or novella without any need for the other chapters. The Rachel chapters and the other chapters do not rely on one another; they enhance one another. This novel tells the story of a poor family and its struggle for survival, with particular focus on the children and how they cope with the cruelty of their world. The story is told in such a way as to allow the reader to vicariously experience the stark contrasts of tenderness versus violence, compassion and kindness versus meanness, and the goodness of innocence versus evil. None of the first-person story tellers realize the pathos of their condition nearly as well as the reader does; therefore, the reader is left free to make judgments which might not occur to the speakers at all. It is possible that each reader will go away having received his or her own individual message, in which case, the author has accomplished much more than she could have ever hoped for

In this research, the author synthesized N-benzylideneisonicotinohydrazide and N -(2-methoxybenzylidene )isonicotinohydrazide. The obtained yield of products would be compared (with the same condition). Reaction mechanism of this synthesis is nucleophilic addition by eliminating water. Methoxy group at 2-methoxybenzaldehyde caused hindrance effect and made it is more difficult to be attacked by a nucleophile. The structure of the products were identified by UV spectrophotometry, IR spectrophotometry, and IH_NMR spectrometry. The N-benzylideneisonicotinohydrazide is produced as white crystal with 98.32% yield and N-(2-methoxybenzylidene)isonicotinohydrazide is produced as white crystal with 66.52% yield. As conclusion, synthesis of Nbenzylideneisonicotinohydrazide gave yield higher than N-(2-methoxybenzylidene )isonicotinohydrazide

The Economic Crises Through the Lens of Economic Well-being

    No full text
This report looks at how the economic crisis has unfolded in Canada and what will be the impacts on economic wellbeing. The shortfall is estimated to be approximately 12,000(12,000 (2007) per capita. In other words, given no economic crisis, GDP per capita in Canada would have likely been $1,736 higher on average each year over the 2008-2014 period. Between October 2008 – the month at which employment peaked in Canada – and May 2009, net employment fell by 362,500 persons. The negative effects of unemployment go well beyond loss of income. Roughly 60 per cent of the newly unemployed, compared to about 40 per cent in recent years, receive regular EI benefits, reflecting the concentration of employment losses among long term full-time employees (e.g. auto workers). Based on the experience of the recession of the early 1990s, we should expect an increase of about 4 percentage points in the after-tax poverty rate, which would reach 13.2 per cent in 2010.Living standards, quality of life, income, housing affordability, wealth, inequality, poverty, productivity, employment quality, net worth, income, disposable income, low income, labour market, economic security, employment, unemployment

Racism experienced by the main character in a song below water

ABSTRACT Ideologies that consider one group's race inferior to another can manifest in various forms, one of which is prejudice, which refers to racism. In A Song Below Water, Tavia experiences racism as a Black woman living in a predominantly white community in Portland. It affects how society treats Tavia, and she has to feel social injustice. This study is literary criticism by applying the Sociological Approach by Alan Swingewood and Laurenson. The author researched using the main theory of Critical Race Theory by Richard Delgado. This research uses the object of literary work in the form of a novel entitled A Song Below Water by American female writer Bethany C. Morrow. This study aims to identify the forms of racism based on the principles of Critical Race Theory experienced by Tavia as the main character in the novel and how the main character tries to fight against racism. The researcher focuses on data in the form of sentences, conversations, and statements relevant to Critical Race Theory principles. The conflict in the novel is backgrounded by the Black racial minority and the siren identity of the main character. The results of this study reveal two findings. First, the main character in the novel experiences four kinds of racism principles based on Richard Delgado’s Critical Race Theory: everyday racism, social construction, intersectionality, and voice of color. Second, the main character plays an active role in the activism movement to fight for the voting rights of minorities who experience racism.

Youth relationships with land and place in the Nechako watershed

    No full text
Scholars have been calling for the integration of the natural environment within social work for over thirty years. However, the literature provides little insight into youth perspectives on their relationships with land and place, particularly in rural and remote communities. In fall 2022, I interviewed twelve students ages 14-17 at Fort St James Secondary School in BC’s Nechako Lakes District (School District 91) about their experiences spending time outdoors. By student choice, half of these interviews took place inside their school and half took place in outdoor settings nearby the school. Through reflexive thematic analysis, I developed five themes from our interviews, including (1) Specificity in relationships: Where we are (and who we are) matters; (2) Pathways to negotiating relationships with land and place; (3) Intersections of community, land, and youth resilience; (4) People are connected through place and time; and (5) Youth have agency and responsibility. My discussion links youth relationships with land and place to social work practice and highlights connections between the resilience of youth, their communities, and the land and water they rely on. This research contributes to a growing body of literature on social work and the environment and identifies future avenues for the integration of land and place within research

abstract: ABSTRACT This project features five new pieces for clarinet commissioned from three different composers including: 1. Rasa by Jeffrey Ouper 2. Faerie Tale Dances by Jeffrey Ouper 3. Amalgamated Widget by Tavia Sullens 4. Faerie Suite by Theresa Martin 5. Time Lapse by Theresa Martin Faerie Suite and Amalgamated Widget are for unaccompanied clarinet; Time Lapse is a trio for clarinet, bass clarinet, and piano; Faerie Tale Dances is a trio for E-flat clarinet, sopranino recorder, and toy piano; and Rasa is a quartet for E-flat clarinet, two A clarinets, and bass clarinet. These pieces challenge the performer in various ways, including complex rhythm, use of extended techniques such as glissando, flutter tongue, and circular breathing, and synthetic and non-traditional scales. The composers were given guidelines prior to the compositional process to create works with a thematic connection to mythology, folklore, or fairy tales, and inspired by dance and non-western or traditional harmonies and idioms. This document offers background information about the composers and the works, and a performance guide is included for each. This guide provides recommendations and suggestions for each piece. Also included are interviews with each of the composers. Accompanying this document are recordings of each of the five pieces, performed by the author.Dissertation/ThesisRasa AudioAmalgamated Widget AudioFaerie Tale Dances- I.
