The assumptions of the Sargent model guarantee stabili ty wi thin avery limited framework which omits basic theoretical considerations. The article tries to show that (1) aggregate logic of the model notonly denies the essence of Keynesian macroeconomic analysis, but alsodoes not solve the old problem of how to pass from the relationshipbetween individuals to global interactions between forces in theeconomy; and (2) Sargent's conclusions on economic policy arepresented as universally valid, but are derived from highly restrictiveassumptions and conditions. The author ignores other situationswhich are equally likely to occur, but would give mathematicalresults and policy recommendations totally different from those ofthe author

Sancti Christi Martyris Justini in Puebla de los Ángeles (Mexico) and the Cult of Catacomb Relics Between Rome and the Americas.

This chapter explores the case of Saint Justin Martyr, whose relics were recently discovered in the convent church of St. Jerome in Puebla de los Ángeles, Mexico. This recovery represents an invaluable testimony of the presence of catacomb relics or corpisanti in Puebla during the eighteenth century. Analysis of surviving material and documentary source materials related to this relic sheds new light on connections between Rome and New Spain in the Americas during the long Counter-Reformation through the donations of Papal nephew Giovanni Antonio Guadagni (1674–1759), who served as Cardinal-Vicar of Rome under his uncle Pope Clement XII (r. 1730–1740), and Pope Benedict XIV (r. 1740–1758)

Irene Sargent (1852-1932), professor of the History of Fine Arts at Syracuse University from 1895 to 1932, was the subject of an article by the author in The Courier, XVI, 2 (Summer 1979), Irene Sargent: Rediscovering a Lost Legend. A leading art historian of her day, Irene Sargent wrote extensively for The Craftsman and The Keystone and contributed as well to other periodicals. Dr. Sargent\u27s articles merit close study as documents of the development of the Arts and Crafts Movement in America. Her work contributed to the growth of an appreciation of native accomplishments in the arts, including the fine crafts, and an understanding of the historical antecedents of those accomplishments. A number of her articles are translations of contemporary European articles, selected to keep her American readers current in matters of European taste. Because of their historical interest, the articles in this bibliography are listed in chronological order. for each periodical in which her work appeared

Professor Irene Sargent was a distinguished teacher of the history of fine arts at Syracuse University for thirty-seven years, from 1895 to 1932. As a noted author and critic in these years, she was influential in promoting and maintaining the values of the Arts and Crafts Movement in America; yet, since her death in 1932, she has been largely forgotten. We can begin to form an image of her as an awesome pillar of knowledge and a great lady with a colorful personality through the vivid memories of her former students

Fiscal Prerequisites for a Viable Managed Exchange Rate Regime: A Non-technical Eclectic Introduction

The paper first reviews the budget identities of the fiscal and monetary authorities and the solvency constraint or present value budget-constraint of the consolidated public sector, for closed and open economies. It then discusses the new conventional wisdom concerning the fiscal roots of inflation and the budgetary prerequisites for generating and stopping hyperinflation. The popular rational expectations "Unpleasant Monetarist Arithmetic" model of Sargent and Wallace has ambiguous inflation implications from an increase in the fundamental deficit and is incapable of generating hyperinflation. The only runaway, explosive or unstable behavior it can exhibit is "hyperdeflation"! In the open economy, the need to maintain a managed exchange rate regime does not impose any constraint on the growth rate of domestic credit, arising through the government's need to remain solvent. Obstfeld's proposition to the contrary is due to the omission of government bonds and borrowing. There is not yet any "deep structural" theory justifying the (exogenous) lower bounds on the stock of foreign exchange reserves characteristic of the collapsing exchange rate literature. Absent such a theory of "international liquidity," one cannot model satisfactorily a foreign exchange crisis that is not at the same time a government solvency crisis. Given such a lower bound, the existence or absence of a pecuniary opportunity cost to holding reserves is shown to condition the fiscal and financial actions consistent with prolonged survival of the managed exchange rate regime.

Lines Written in my Closet : Volume One of Judith Sargent Murray\u27s Poetry Manuscripts

Once holding an esteemed literary reputation as author of The Gleaner (1798), an eclectic collection of prose and poetry serialized and sold by advance subscription, Judith Sargent Murray (1751-1820) was virtually forgotten for nearly two centuries. The 1986 discovery of manuscripts believed to have been lost prompted critics to evaluate anew Sargent Murray’s literary accomplishments. Previously unpublished poems and letters mark the prolific author as an important figure in early America’s self-conscious attempt to establish a national literature. This dissertation makes available Volume One of Sargent Murray’s poetry manuscript journals: two hundred and twenty previously unpublished poems and two that were published in The Massachusetts Magazine. The poems in Volume One serve as a representative sampling of the poet’s oeuvre, and the critical introduction and annotations of the first volume provide evidence of her stature as an important figure in early American political activism. She stands out as an early feminist, as a keen observer of social and historical issues (most notably the contest with Great Britain), and as a staunch proponent of the Universalist Church in America
