    Haas-Molnar Continued Fractions and Metric Diophantine Approximation.

    Haas–Molnar maps are a family of maps of the unit interval introduced by A. Haas and D. Molnar. They include the regular continued fraction map and A. Renyi’s backward continued fraction map as important special cases. As shown by Haas and Molnar, it is possible to extend the theory of metric diophantine approximation, already well developed for the Gauss continued fraction map, to the class of Haas–Molnar maps. In particular, for a real number x, if (p n /q n )n≥1 denotes its sequence of regular continued fraction convergents, set θ n (x) = q 2n|x − p n /q n |, n = 1, 2.... The metric behaviour of the Cesàro averages of the sequence (θ n (x))n≥1 has been studied by a number of authors.     The Nursery is a novel written in English by Szilvia Molnar and translated into Brazilian Portuguese by Marcela Lanius. The text, narrated in the first person by a nameless protagonist, is a careful writing project between the author and her translator character, the latter on the verge of becoming a mother through language. Marked by the often grotesque tone of the bodily metamorphosis of the postpartum period, the novel requires the translator to articulate herself and the target language in order to make the translation project resonate with the brutal and affective experiences of motherhood. In this interview, Marcela Lanius discusses her translation project, which sought to understand, translate, and recreate the strangeness of the source text.Máquina de Leite é um romance escrito, em inglês, por Szilvia Molnar, e traduzido ao português brasileiro por Marcela Lanius.     Women are major actors in forestry throughout the developing world. Women and children are the primary collectors of fuel and fodder for home consumption and for sale to urban markets. This alone gives women a major role in the management and conservation of renewable forest resources. When convinced of the utility and practicality of a forest improvement or management scheme, women can be a powerful lobby to persuade their entire houshold or community to invest the resources necessary to make the scheme work.     LAUREA MAGISTRALEI fiumi sono sistemi naturali complessi: elementi di connessione tra le varie parti dei loro bacini, raccolgono e producono sedimenti, ridistribuiscono i nutrienti lungo il loro corso, ospitano innumerevoli habitat e sono fonti di acqua e di energia. Grazie a queste caratteristiche, i fiumi sono oggetto di grande interesse per molteplici attivitá: dall’approvvigionamento idrico per uso domestico, agricolo e industriale alla produzione di cibo, alla navigazione e alla produzione di energia. Il comportamento dei sistemi fluviali é il risultato dell’interazione di diversi fattori che possono essere divisi fra abiotici, come ad esempio le condizioni climatiche, le caratteristiche geologiche del bacino o i processi di trasporto di sedimenti, e biotici, ossia l’insieme degli impatti prodotti da tutte le specie che convivono nell’ambiente fluviale: piante, animali e uomini. Per questo motivo l’agricoltura, la costruzione di dighe e la loro gestione, le attivitá estrattive e tutte le altre attivitá umane che modificano il bacino e il regime delle portate costituiscono un forte elemento di disturbo per l’equilibrio dei fiumi, che spesso si traduce in una riduzione della connettivitá fluviale e in condizioni di degrado ambientale diffuse. In questa tesi viene approfondito il tema della valutazione degli impatti del cambiamento d’uso del suolo e della costruzione di dighe sulla connettivitá fluviale dei sedimenti attraverso l’uso di un modello adatto a descrivere i processi di trasporto solido alla scala dell’intero bacino. CASCADE (CAtchment Sediment Connectivity And Delivery, Schmitt (2017)) é un modello sviluppato appositamente per sopperire a questa necessitá. In particolare, questo modello permette di ottenere informazioni spazialmente distribuite sulla provenienza e sul luogo di deposizione di sedimenti, rendendo cosí possibile la descrizione quantitativa della connettivitá dei sedimenti all’interno delle reti fluviali. Al fine di includere la valutazione degli effetti del cambiamento d’uso del suolo, viene proposta una nuova versione di CASCADE in cui viene integrato il contributo di versante a ogni singolo tronco fluviale e sono considerate tre classi granulometriche. Per stimare quanti sedimenti vengono prodotti in ogni cella in cui é stato suddiviso il bacino e la proporzione in cui raggiungeranno la rete fluviale, prendendo cosí parte ai processi di trasporto, sono state utilizzate rispettivamente la Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (Renard, 1997) e il Sediment Delivery Ratio, nella forma proposta da Vigiak et al. (2012). Il contributo di versante cosí stimato é successivamente dato in input alla nuova versione di CASCADE. All’interno del nuovo CASCADE vengono poi sviluppati due diversi modelli che rappresentano differenti ipotesi di trasporto e vengono infine confrontate tre equazioni di trasporto solido. Questa nuova versione di CASCADE é stata applicata al caso di studio del fiume Omo, nella parte sudoccidentale dell’Etiopia. L’Omo é uno dei fiumi piú ricchi al mondo per biodiversitá, storia, presenza di numerose etnie e culture, tanto da essere dichiarato nel 1980 Patrimonio dell’Umanitá dall’UNESCO. Tuttavia, il suo bacino sta subendo importanti cambiamenti antropici: é infatti in corso la costruzione di un complesso di dighe per la produzione di energia idroelettrica e la realizzazione di vaste piantagioni per la produzione di canna da zucchero e cotone. Vengono poi proposti e utilizzati alcuni indicatori adatti alla valutazione della connettivitá dei sedimenti per svolgere un’analisi di diversi scenari, all’interno dei quali vengono considerate diverse combinazioni di cambiamento d’uso del suolo e di realizzazione dei serbatoi. I risultati mostrano che gli scenari di cambiamento d’uso del suolo influenzano gli impatti in misura minima rispetto alla costruzione delle dighe. Secondo la nostra analisi, le dighe sono destinate a trattenere volumi elevati di sedimenti. Ne risulterebbe una diminuzione del flusso di sedimenti a valle di queste, con conseguente riduzione dell’apporto di nutrienti nella pianura alluvionale e del carico di sedimenti alla foce, che a sua volta inciderebbe sull’equilibrio morfologico ed ecologico del delta che si sviluppa nel lago Turkana. Questo studio fa parte del progetto DAFNE (Decision Analytic Framework to explore the water-energy-food NExus in transboundary water resource systems of fast developing countries), sviluppato in collaborazione con l’ETH di Zurigo. Parte di questa tesi é stata svolta all’ETH sotto la supervisione del prof. Peter Molnar, durante un periodo di tre mesi in cui ho avuto la possibilitá di lavorare a fianco dell’eccezionale gruppo di ricercatori del Dipartimento di Ingegneria Civile, Ambientale e Geomatica.Rivers are complex natural systems: elements of connection throughout their basins, they collect and produce sediments, redistribute nutrients along their path, host several different habitats and are sources of water and energy carriers. Due to all these features, rivers are of great interest to a wide variety of concerns, ranging from water supply, for domestic, agricultural and industrial purpose, to food provision, navigation and power generation. Fluvial systems behaviour reflects the interaction of many controls that can be divided in abiotic, such as climate, geology and sediment transport, and biotic, i.e. all the impacts produced by all the species living in the riverine ecosystems: plants, animals and humans. For this reason, agriculture, dam construction and operation, mining and all the other human activities that modify the catchment and flow characteristics represent a strong element of disturbance to the rivers equilibrium, often resulting in reduced connectivity and diffused environmental degradation. In this thesis we focus on the assessment of the impacts of land use change and dam construction on sediment connectivity. To achieve this aim, a tool for describing patterns of sediment deposition and transport from a whole network perspective was needed. CASCADE (CAtchment Sediment Connectivity And DElivery, Schmitt (2017)) is a modelling framework specifically developed to address this issue. In particular, this framework allows to get spatially distributed information about the provenance and settling location of sediments coming from specific sources and is therefore able to quantitatively describe sediment connectivity in river networks. In order to include the evaluation of land use change, a new version of CASCADE is proposed in which the hillslope contributions to each river reach are integrated and three grain size classes are considered. To accomplish this task, the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (Renard et al., 1997) was coupled with a Sediment Delivery Ratio (computed according to Vigiak et al. (2012)), to estimate respectively how much sediment is produced in each pixel of the catchment and in which percentage it will actually reach the river, entering therefore the stream network and taking part to the transport processes. The resulting sediment delivery is used as input for the revised CASCADE. Moreover, two alternative CASCADE models are developed to represent different transport hypotheses and three different transport equations are compared. This revised framework is applied to the Omo river basin, in the southwestern part of Ethiopia. The Omo is one of the richest rivers in biodiversity, history and presence of multiple ethnic groups and cultures, so that in 1980 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Nevertheless, its catchment is now undergoing severe anthropic changes: a hydropower dam cascade and extensive plantations realizations are now in progress. Suitable indicators for sediment connectivity assessment are proposed and employed to perform a scenario analysis, in which different combinations of dams construction and land use change possibilities are considered. We obtained that land use change scenarios affect the results in a minimal proportion compared to the impact generated by dams. According to our analysis, dams are likely to trap high volumes of sediments. As a consequence this would result in diminished sediment fluxes downstream of them, causing a reduction in nutrient delivery on the floodplain and reduced sediment yield to the outlet, in turn affecting the morphological and ecological equilibrium of the river delta that develops in Lake Turkana.     Long-term vehicle reservations in one-way free-floating carsharing systems: A variable quality of service model

    Reservations in daily services can improve user satisfaction, and give additional information about the demand patterns to the operators. However, providing reservations to carsharing clients is difficult. While carsharing is especially convenient if it is allowing one-way trips and vehicle drop-off anywhere in the service area (called free-floating), this flexibility increases management complexity because of vehicle stock imbalance. Most of the commercial providers of free-floating carsharing offer reservations under highly restrictive terms, for example only up to 30 min in advance. In this paper, we propose an innovative reservation enforcement technique that allows substantially longer reservation times while keeping the system profitable and achieving high service quality. A simple way to enforce reservations is locking vehicles until the departure time of a client. However, it comes at the cost of idling vehicles that could be used by other users and decreasing the revenue. Our approach, called relocations-based reservation enforcement method (R-BR) combines vehicle locking and relocation movements. It locks vehicles only a short time before the trip departure if a suitable vehicle is close enough due to the natural trip patterns. If no such vehicle is available, a car is relocated from another place. Further, we propose a variable quality of service (QoS) model in which the guaranteed radius around the user within which the reserved vehicle will be placed, and the maximum allowed reservation time before the departure depends on the zone of trip departure. A simulation-based optimization is used whereby the carsharing operation is simulated and optimized using an iterated local search (ILS) metaheuristic for adjustment of service level parameters. The proposed technique is tested on a set of artificial problem examples and a case study of a simulated working day in the Lisbon Municipality, Portugal. Results show that the proposed R-BR method is substantially better than the simple vehicle locking when the constant QoS approach is used and that the devised ILS metaheuristic can further increase the system performance, especially with high trip volumes.Accepted Author ManuscriptTransport and Plannin
