Mindscapes: Laura Riding's poetry and poetics /
No full textTese (doutorado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão.Esta tese propõe uma leitura revisionista da poesia contemporânea através do exame do caso de um dos mais esquecidos escritores norte-americanos do século XX: Laura (Riding) Jackson (1901-1991). O objetivo é demonstrar que Riding não apenas possuía uma poética definida e singular, mas que ela permanece uma das instâncias mais extremas e paradoxais do modernismo anglo-americano, a ponto de Riding abandonar a escrita da poesia em 1938. Recorrendo a conceitos de "formação do cânone" bem como às noções de "discurso" e "função do autor", em Foucault, investigo a construção do cânone da poesia moderna anglo-americana, recuperando o contexto e as circunstâncias da ocultação de Riding. Enquanto cubro os "discursos" poéticos em circulação na primeira metade do século XX-o "imagismo" de Pound, a "dissociação da sensibilidade", "impersonalidade" e "tradição" de Eliot, a "unidade orgância" e "ambigüidade" da Nova Crítica-ofereço um panorama crítico de modernismos alternativos sendo articulados à época. Minha intenção é demonstrar que os poemas de Riding são expressões vigorosas de um escritor para quem "a mente pensando se torna a força ativa do poema", para usar a apta formulação de Charles Bernstein. Entre minhas descobertas sobre as várias e complexas razões que levaram à não-canonização de Riding estão a hegemonia da Nova Crítica, o exílio voluntário de Riding da cena literária (onde são feitas ou desfeitas as reputações), sua recusa em ser antologiada, bem como em ser explicada em termos críticos que não os dela. Todos esses fatores, mais a "dificuldade" de sua poesia, contribuíram para fazer de Riding "a maior poeta esquecida da poesia norte-americana", como escreveu Kenneth Rexroth. Ajudado pelos insights de dois importantes críticos de poesia norte-americana, Charles Bernstein e Marjorie Perloff, defendo que a "poesia da mente" de Riding-onde o que está em jogo é que o que pensamos ser a nossa realidade-representa uma mudança radical no paradigma da poética modernista: de uma poesia centrada na imagem para uma poesia centrada na linguagem. Focalizando a experiência consciente e o tempo duracional do pensamento presente em seus poemas, concluo que as "pensagens" de Riding têm o objetivo preciso de constatar um fato universal: enquanto seres humanos e pensantes, estamos numa condição permanente chamada linguagem

Pressure to Publish: Laura Terracina and her Editors
No full textLaura Terracina (1519–c.1577) was the bestselling female author of sixteenth-century Italy, publishing eight poetry collections, several of which went through numerous reprints. While other female poets attained greater cultural prestige, none was as widely published, nor reflected so well the developing worlds of print, publication, and authorship from mid- to late Cinquecento. Her publication history problematizes the accepted narrative of how women came to print and of their relationship with their editors and publishers. From the time she first appeared in print in 1546 to the writing of her final manuscript in 1577, Terracina proved to be an engaged and headstrong author with a strong sense of ownership of her works. This article will explore Terracina’s relationships with her editors and publishers, analyzing her role in the publication process to argue that she took a much more active part in their production than has previously been appreciated

On the finiteness of certain factorization invariants
No full textLet H be a monoid and πH be the unique extension of the identity map on H to a monoid homomorphism F(H)→H, where we denote by F(X) the free monoid on a set X.Given A⊆H,anA-word z (i.e., an element of F(A)) is minimal if πH(z)=πH(z′) for every permutation z′ of a proper subword of z. The minimal A-elasticity of H is then the supremum of all rational numbers m/n with m,n∈N+ such that there exist minimal A-words a and b of length m and n, resp., with πH(a)=πH(b). Among other things, we show that if H is commutative and A is finite, then the minimal A-elasticity of H is finite. This provides a non-trivial generalization of the finiteness part of a classical theorem of Anderson et al. from the case where H is cancellative, commutative, and f initely generated modulo units, and A is the set A(H)ofatomsofH. We also demonstrate that commutativity is somewhat essential here, by proving the existence of an atomic, cancellative, f initely generated monoid with trivial group of units whose minimal A (H)-elasticity is infinite
