    Un nuevo analisis de la distribución vertical de Paracalanus crassirostris (Copepoda Calanoidea) mediante el modelo linear general (Omega)

    The material analysed here is part of a collection made with a 91 van Dorn bottle in a 5 m depth station at Ubatuba - São Pauto, between June 1976 and May 1977. Two sets of general linear models were constructed, one for the winter months (June, July and August) and the other for the summer ones (December, January and February). In each set, copepodid stages and adults were studied separately, in relation to hour of sampling, depth, interaction hour-depth, and environmental factors (light penetration, dissolved oxygen, salinity and temperature, considered as a whole). All the stages studied were spread in the water column and show no vertical migration. The hour was not significant for any stage except for copepodid V female in winter. This results agree with a previous analysis of the same material performed with the data of each two months throughout the year (Milstein, 1978)

    Variables affecting the plankton network in Mediterranean ports

    Attention on port waters is increasing since these economically important infrastructures are embedded in the coastal environment and their management needs to be considered in the monitoring programmes of coastal ecosystems. To implement the sustainable development (blue growth) of port areas, a general knowledge on the ongoing processes in their waters needs to be obtained, considering both abiotic and biotic variables. The present study aimed at inspecting the relationships among plankton components to provide insights into the ecology of ports. Seasonal samplings were carried out in three Mediterranean touristic ports where bacterio-, phyto- and zoo-plankton were simultaneously assessed at a large spatial scale and compared with respect to environmental variables and anthropogenic inputs. Factor analysis revealed the effects of load of inland waters, seasonality, water turbulence and hydrocarbon pollution on the planktonic components and zooplankton variability in port sectors characterized by different depths and uses

    An efficient tamed Milstein Scheme for the Stochastic Allen-Cahn equation with multiplicative noise

    ©The Author(s) 2026.The version of record of this article, first published in [Journal of Scientific Computing], is available online at Publisher’s website: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10915-026-03218-7This paper investigates the strong convergence of a fully discrete scheme for the stochastic Allen–Cahn equation with multiplicative noise, combining a tamed Milstein method for the temporal discretization with the finite element method in space. The proposed method is shown to be unconditionally stable in spatial dimensions d ∈{1,2,3}. Beyond the inherent challenges caused by, see, e.g., [1], the cubic non-globally Lipschitz drift term and multiplicative driving noise in the convergence analysis, the Milstein scheme further complicates the error estimation of the noise term compared to the Euler-Maruyama discretization. By introducing a novel auxiliary process, we rigorously establish strong convergence rates in both space and time under mild assumptions for d ∈{1,2}. Our analysis shows that the temporal convergence order is doubled compared to that of tamed Euler-Maruyama scheme. Numerical experiments are provided to confirm the theoretical results and to demonstrate that the proposed scheme exhibits improved robustness over the pure semi-implicit Milstein method

    Iota-Carrageenan Prevents the Replication of SARS-CoV-2 in a Human Respiratory Epithelium Cell Line in vitro

    Iota-carrageenan is a sulfated polysaccharide extracted from red seaweeds, which, formulated into a nasal spray, has already been proven safe and effective in viral upper respiratory infections. In Calu-3, a human respiratory epithelium cell line, we explored the activity of a formula of iota-carrageenan and sodium chloride against SARS-CoV-2. In this study, the assayed formula, already approved as a nasal spray for human use, effectively inhibited SARS-CoV-2 infection, providing a more substantial reference for clinical studies or developments.Fil: Varese, Augusto.     A multivariate approach to environmental-zooplankton relationships in Maldonado Bay (Uruguay)

    Environment-zooplankton relationships were analysed in Maldonado Bay (Uruguay), an estuarine area between the River Plate and the Atlantic Ocean. This was done through Principal Component Analysis. Most of the environment variability is accounted for, primarily, by the outflow of the River Plate and the inflow of coastal waters which change through the annual cycle, and in the second place by surface water conditions. On the other hand, most of the zooplankton variability is accounted for by 17 taxa abundant in April and February and by one dominant species present only from May to August. A second source of zooplanktonic variability is due to species which occurred in fall only The main observed variabili ty occurred on an annual scale. On it, variations on smaller scales overlap: from one day to another, between Maldonado Bay and the adjacent waters of the River Plate. The main factors involved were different at each scale. The Bay is relatively isolated from adjacent waters, but the degree of isolation varies throughout the year. The influence of coastal water is greater and occurs first outside the Bay. Biological processes may develop under different conditions in the Bay and in the adjacent waters of the River Plate

    Vertical distribution of paracalanus crassirostris (copepoda, calanoidea): analysis by the general linear model

    The vertical distribution of each developmental stage of Paracalanus crassirostris was studied in a shallow water station at Ubatuba, SP, Brazil (23º30'S-45º07'W). Samples were collected monthly at the surface, 2m and near bottom levels . Salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, tide height, light penetration arid solar radiation were also recorded. Data were analysed by the general linear model. It showed that the amount of individuals at any developmental stage is affected diversely by hour, depth, hour-depth interaction and environmental factors throughout the year and that these effects are stronger in summer. All developmental stages were spread in the water column showing no regular vertical migrations. On the other hand, the number of organisms caught in a particular hour seemed to dependmore on the tide than on the animals behaviour. The results of the present paper showed, as observed by some other authors, the lack of vertical migration of a coastal copepod which is a grazer of fine particles throughout its life.A distribuição vertical dos diferentes estádios de desenvolvimento de P. crassirostris foi estudada durante um ano (junho 1976 - maio 1977), numa estação pouco profunda (5 m) em Ubatuba. As amostras foram coletadas mensalmente, em tres profundidades, cada quatro horas, com garrafa van Dorn de 9 l registrando-se dados ambientais. Os dados foram processados com a técnica dos Mínimos Quadrados, na forma de uma Aralise de Regressão de um Modelo Linear que inclui covariáveis. O modelo foi construído a priori, considerando densidade de organismos por amostra, fatores ambientais, diferenças entre amostras procedentes de diferentes profundidades e horas, também como interações entre hora e profundidade. Para cada estádio de P. crassirostris, o modelo foi repetido 9 vezes, com os dados de dois meses cada vez, a fim de obter a variação das respostas no ano. Os resultados do modelo indicaram que a quantidade de indivíduos desta especie de qualquer estádio é diferentemente afetada durante o ano pela hora, profundidade, interação hora-profundidade, e fatores ambientais. Esses efeitos seriam mais marcados no verão. A maior ou menor ocorrência de organismos numa dada hora parece depender mais da dinamica do sistema de correntes (mares) que do comportamento dos animais. Todos os estádios apresentaram-se distribuídos na coluna de agua e não mostraram migrações verticais marcadas como parte do seu comportamento normal. Os fatores ambientais em conjunto mostraram-se importantes na distribuição deste organismo, especialmente no verão. Bjornberg & Wilbur (1968) e Sameoto (1975) relacionaram o comportamento migrador pouco marcado ou ausente com o nível trofico que os planctontes costeiros ocupam. Os primeiros autores assinalaram a presença de partículas finas em todas as profundidades em aguas rasas, e a migraçao pouco definida de copepodos filtradores provenientes desse tipo de ãgua; o segundo autor distinguiu, em aguas pouco p?ofundas também, uma comunidade formada por predadores e uma comunidade de presas formada por copepodos nao migradores. Os resultados do presente trabalho apoiam essas idéias, mostrando a falta de migraçao em todos os estádios de um copêpodo que e, durante toda a sua vida, filtrador de partículas finas
