Delicate Moments: Kids Talk About Socially Complicated Issues
Early adolescents showed the author that developing a complex understanding of oneself in the world requires ample opportunities to publicly speak one\u27s own story in the presence of a mindful listener. The story that follows is as much about creating spaces for students to craft social understandings as it is about political conclusions. It is about the ways in which adults ask children questions, and the ways children answer. Finally, it is about the nature of silence and the ambivalence of speaking
Heat induced attachment and detachment of delicate tissues: Towards a new micro tissue gripper
Indirect Heat Induced Attachment and Detachment (HIAD) is a promising concept for gripping delicate tissues in ophthalmic surgery. However, the optimal settings of attaching to and detaching from delicate tissues are unknown. This study presents the effects of the instrument heating properties and initial contact force on the adhesion force, detachment success and thermal damage. An instrument prototype was developed to test attachment and detachment for different combinations of generated heat (3.5-20.0mJ) and pulse length (0.25-2.50ms). Thermal tissue damage was estimated with electro-thermal FEM simulations and histological analysis. The adhesion force depended strongly on the amount of generated heat and contact force. Pulse length played a minor role. Detachment success was determined by the maximum instrument temperature. Thermal tissue damage was strongly related to the amount of generated heat, the effect of pulse length was marginal. In RPE-choroid graft analysis, the RPE cells were not affected by heat. HIAD proved sensitive to heating characteristics and tissue properties. Nevertheless, this principle creates potential to build better performing tissue manipulators.BioMedical Engineering: Medical Instruments & Medical SafetyBioMechanical EngineeringMechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineerin
Coscienze delicate al microscopio. Nuove ipotesi su Svevo
The essay examines the protagonists’ “delicate consciences” in three pièces of Svevo – Inferiorità, Un marito, La rigenerazione – in order to uncover the secret background of these consciences and the “monsters” who inhabit it. The essay also delves into a scandalous episode present in Coscienza di Zeno and extended in La rigenerazione. In the essay the author documents with new observations the opening of the svevian theatre to the powerful influence of Ibsen and Strindberg
Order, or Disorder
Amy Newman has published over 200 poems in North America, England, Italy, and Romania. Poems have been anthologized in The Iowa Anthology of New American Poetries, The Rose Metal Press Field Guide to Prose Poetry, and Sentence’s An Introduction to the Prose Poem. A recipient of three Individual Artists Fellowships and a MacDowell Colony Fellow, she is editor of Ancora Imparo, the journal of arts, process, and remnant. An assistant professor of creative writing and literature at Northern Illinois University, she has also taught at McNeese State University, Hocking College, Ohio University and Denison University.
“In an efflorescence of emblem and element, these poems locate the mercurial female principle again. In ocean, rain, rock, in primordial color, here is an amplitude of words to relieve us just as the century closes. Here, again, a poet has found bedrock among the stars. Amy Newman has written mutable figures into consciousness; here is a place of metaphor where, as she puts it, ‘language crawls the country on its belly.’” –Jane Miller
“If it is possible for poetry to increase the amount of the meaning of human freedom, then Amy Newman’s Order, or Disorder does so, powerfully. By establishing then responding to its own sense of duty, even the title becomes an invitation and an opening, a gesture of inclusion. And the sometimes astringent intelligence of this poet, added to the delicate nuance of her imagery, produce glistening, smart, sometimes funny, always fascinating poems.” –Bin Ramke

"BUTCHERING BEEF" (ON A DELICATE NUPTIAL CUSTOM)
U članku je riječ o suvremenom svadbenom običaju iz sela Lobor u Hrvatskom zagorju. Nije sigurno da li je običaj bio poznat i u prošlosti. Etnološka literatura ga ne bilježi, a ne spominje se ni u opisu svadbenih običaja iz Lobora s početka stoljeća (Kotarski, 1915, 1917, 1918).A contemporary recording of a delicate nuptial custom motivated the author to pose several questions relevant to ethnology on the relationship of the recorder and his record as well as with problems of interpreting that record. Comparisons arise with other customs and folklore phenomena; they share a fictitious or true slaughtering of an animal (usually cattle, a heifer) and dividing up the meat accompanied by witty commentary. The "Butchering Beef" and other recorded wedding customs allude to the defloration of the bride, which is the source of their delicacy. Perhaps for this reason there are no such recordings in the Yugoslav ethnological literature
The impact of birth trauma on the couple relationship and related support requirements; a framework analysis of parents' perspectives
BACKGROUND: Ongoing distress following a traumatic birth experience, commonly known as birth trauma, can lead to post-traumatic stress symptoms. Experiencing birth trauma can affect personal well-being and impact the couple relationship.
OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to explore the lived experience of the impact of birth trauma on the couple relationship and related support requirements.
METHODS: A purposive sample of men and women in the UK who had experienced birth as traumatic were recruited and interviewed remotely in 2021. Data were analysed using framework analysis in NVivo 12.
RESULTS: The sample (N=18) contained 9 women who were first time parents and 9 men; 5 of which were first time parents and 4 who had two children. Twelve themes are reported related to the impact of birth trauma on the couple relationship. Findings suggest the impact of birth trauma on the couple relationship can be negative and distressing, or for some lead to a strengthened relationship. Fourteen themes are reported related to associated birth trauma support. Negative aspects of support were reported in themes: unavailability of help from friends and family; unhelpful birth debriefing services; no personal awareness of birth trauma; absence of trauma validation from health care professionals; lack of awareness of the emotional needs of men; and barriers to accessing psychological services. Potential improvements to support included: supporting parents to understand the traumatic events; birth trauma informed antenatal preparation; improving access to specialist psychological services; and compassionate parent centred maternity services.
CONCLUSIONS: The impact of birth trauma on the couple relationship appears complex with both positive and negative affects reported. Current support for the impact of birth trauma on the couple relationship has perceived inadequacies for which improvements are proposed
A Gripper for Deformable and Delicate Objects at High Acceleration Using a Contact-Reactive Grasping Approach
Introduction: This research aims to develop a gripper that is capable of handling deformable and delicate objects at high acceleration (≥10 G) using a contact-reactive grasping approach while moving. Commercial grippers are already suitable for handling various food products at high speed and acceleration when combined with a parallel manipulator, but use a standard grasping approach. The gripper is positioned over the object and moves down to grasp it requiring (in most cases vision based) 2D positioning. Contact-reactive grasping can overcome the need for costly high accuracy vision systems and reduce stationary time taken up by vertical movement. Methods: The working principles and design aspects of a variety of soft grippers were analysed. Requirements were set up from the analysed soft grippers, defining the boundaries of the concepts. Concepts have emerged from these requirements, and the most promising concept has been developed towards a final design. From the final design a working prototype emerged, the FinFix gripper. The FinFix gripper consists of two fixed fingers and two movable fingers. The fixed fingers are equipped with flex sensors to detect contact with the object while approaching the object horizontally. The two movable fingers are individually actuated by pneumatic pistons. 3D-printing was mostly used to manufacture the FinFix gripper. Static as well as dynamic grasping and holding tests were conducted to verify if the functional requirements were met. Results: The FinFix gripper has soft contact with the object to prevent bruising or denting. The test results show that the gripper can hold an apple, a tomato and an egg at 10 G of lateral acceleration. The gripper is also able to hold an object with a size of at least 70mm and has a total weight 537 grams. A full grasping cycle only takes 1.01 seconds from the start of movement until the object is released when the distance between pick and place location is around 400 mm. This gripper uses already existing contact-reactive grasping to detect contact with the object and reduces the positioning requirements to one dimensional. The way contact-reactive grasping is used makes this design stand out from other contact-reactive grasping implementations. Conclusion: By developing the FinFix gripper, new knowledge was acquired on how contactreactive grasping can be used in fast pick-and-place operations for deformable or delicate objects. Future research is recommended to increase food contact safety, holding performance and sensing performance. The gripper’s performance showed excellent potential to be further developed into a possible commercial product.Biomedical Engineerin
Delicate Questioning Practices in Broadcast Talk
This paper is part of the doctoral dissertation which will be submitted by the author at University of Hawai'iFrom a conversation analytic perspective, this study aims to explore how the talk show host accomplishes delicate questioning practices through the employment of the directly or hypothetically quoted reported speech as well as syntactic and multimodal resources. For the analysis, the third-party quotation, the anonymous party quotation and the nonco-present TV audience quotation are examined. In quoting the thirdparty or the anonymous party, the host claims less knowledgeable epistemic stance and solicits the stories from the guest speakers (or more knowledgeable speakers). In quoting the non-co-present TV audience, the host establishes the tellability on the story-to-be-told and questions possible inquiries that the audience may have for the guest speakers. Through such practices, the host strategically approaches the guests rumors or personal questions while detaching himself from the produced report
Delicate Target: A Multi-Dimensional Representation of Woman using RIP Digital Printing Software to Enlarging Half-scale to Full-scale
ITAA Annual Conference ProceedingsThe author previously investigated the use of flowers in advertisements targeting women. This
connection between women and flowers implies that the ideal woman is delicate and beautiful like a flower. The
exploration outcome was a gown that made the wearer look like a rose (McKinney, 2006). The current design’s
purpose was to create a multi-faceted representation of the female target market. The visually strong black and white
target side exterior was juxtaposed with a delicate floral side collaged from apparel, makeup, perfume, and jewelry
advertisements. The wearer’s self-representation may be controlled by how the reversible vest is worn. Whether she
chooses to show her strong side or her delicate side, the other side will always be peeking out from the inside
