Parallel solution in time of ODEs: some achievements and perspectives

    No full text
The parallel solution of initial value problems for ordinary differential equations (ODE-IVPs) has received much interest from many researchers in the past years. In general, the possibility of using parallel computing in this setting concerns different aspects of the numerical solution of ODEs, depending on the parallel platform to be used and/or the complexity of the problem to be solved. In particular, in this paper we examine possible extensions of a parallel method previously proposed in the mid-nineties [P. Amodio, L. Brugnano, Parallel implementation of block boundary value methods for ODEs, J. Comput. Appl. Math. 78 (1997) 197–211; P. Amodio, L. Brugnano, Parallel ODE solvers based on block BVMs, Adv. Comput. Math. 7 (1997) 5–26], and analyze its connections with subsequent approaches to the parallel solution of ODE-IVPs, in particular the “Parareal” algorithm proposed in [J.L. Lions, Y. Maday, G. Turinici, Résolution d’EDP par un schéma en temps “pararéel”, C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris, Ser. I 332 (2001) 661–668; Y. Maday, G. Turinici, A parareal in time procedure for the control of partial differential equations, C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris, Ser. I 335 (2002) 387–392]

    Cultural Heritage and Collective Knowledge

This research deals with the analysis of cultural heritage through innovative technologies and presents, in detail, a project which proved fully in line with the “smart city” model, in specie created for the promotion of the old neighborhoods downtown Salerno. The initiative, named “Salerno in Particular. Cultural Heritage and Innovation”, raised from the creativity of several students in the University of Salerno, who— within institutional cooperation—developed a cultural alternative to the extant ones, focused on the systematization of a wide range of knowledge and skills, both humanistic and scientific. Through a wideranging performance of activities and events—carried out in different and prestigious venues throughout the city—the historic district’s downtown Salerno (a geographical context characterized by a distributed presence of historical, artistic, and archeological relics) have been interpreted and proposed so to retrace the past with an eye to modernity. From a methodological point of view, the named actions have greatly benefited from the geographic-based contribution; in particular, they have allowed the deepening of aspects related to localization and contextualization of cultural heritage and made possible the elaboration of detailed maps (even geo-referenced and interactive, independently proposed, and others) as a starting point for the various involvements of the project)

Behavior of fiber reinforced metal laminates at high strain rate

Carbon Fiber Reinforced Aluminum Laminate (CARALL) is a good system for energy absorption through plastic deformation in aluminum and micro-cracking in the composite layers. Moreover, CARALL FMLs also provide excellent impact resistance due to the presence of aluminum layer. The focus of this research is to characterize the CARALL behavior under dynamic conditions. High strain rate tests on sheet laminate samples have been carried out by means of direct Split Hopkinson Tension Bar. The sample geometry and the clamping system were optimized by FEM simulations. The clamping system has been designed and optimized in order reduce impedance disturbance due to the fasteners and to avoid the excessive plastic strain outside the gauge region of the samples
