Get PDFIn 1960 at the 18th modern Olympiad in Rome, Wilma Rudolph, twenty-years-old and black from Clarksville, Tennessee, became the first American woman to win three Olympic gold medals. Having experienced physical handicaps, racial prejudice, and bitter poverty, she had stretched her natural abilities to become the fastest woman runner of her day. Subsequently she received plenty of promotion but little cash, and her message calls attention to the precarious emotional and financial status of black American women, especially black American women athletes. This autobiography (Martin Ralbovsky, author of the excellent Destiny\u27s Darlings, a boys-of-summer story of Little League baseball, is listed as Editorial Associate -whatever that means) is loaded with common-sense statements, hard looks at cliche responses, and survival techniques in a hostile environment

Robust Design of a Fixture Configuration in the Presence of form Deviations
Get PDFAbstractDuring machining, the tool path is defined with respect to the workpiece reference frame. The workpiece's boundary surfaces have form deviations, and the geometry and the position of the locators are imperfect. The resulting misalignment produces geometrical errors in the features machined on the workpiece.The main purpose of this work is to investigate how the geometric errors of a machined surface are related to the main sources of the locator errors and to the form deviations of the workpiece. A mathematical framework is presented for an analysis of the relationship among the manufacturing errors, the part form deviations, and the locator errors

Esta pensadora proveniente del campo de la psicología cognitiva propone un acercamiento al psicoanálisis que conlleva una revisión de conceptos basales, tanto para la psicología cognitiva, que según su entender debe reconocer una deuda intelectual con el psicoanálisis, como para el psicoanálisis, que debe replantearse el sentido de algunos de sus términos basales y la estructura general de su metapsicología. Se presentan en forma sintética los desarrollos teóricos y metodológicos a fin de comprender cuáles son los conceptos fundamentales de la obra de esta autora.The purpose of this paper is to present some key concepts in the works of Wilma Bucci. The author, who comes from the field of Cognitive Psychology, proposes an approach to Psychoanalysis that involves the revision of essential concepts of both Cognitive Psychology – which in her view should acknowledge its intellectual debt to Psychoanalysis – and Psychoanalysis, which should reconsider the sense of some of its fundamental notions as well as the general structure of its metapsychology. The Natural Woman in the Literature of Wilma Dykeman and Barbara Kingsolver
Get PDFWilma Dykeman and Barbara Kingsolver examine the themes of environmentalism and feminism in The Tall Woman and Flight Behavior. The authors write against the common stereotype of people from Southern Appalachia being ignorant or apathetic about environmental issues. Both novels feature empowering female protagonists whose close relationship with the land allows them to recognize environmental threats and devastation. In the paper I use an ecofeminist lens to demonstrate how the female protagonists fight against environmental destruction by teaching their communities about the reality of environmental issues. Ultimately the female protagonists in each novel are introduced to how an environmental issue can create tension in a community with different beliefs and change the conversation.
Read alongside works of nonfiction by each author, the novels of Wilma Dykeman and Barbara Kingsolver convey a message about how Southern Appalachia is faced with environmental issues; Dykeman focuses on water pollution and Kingsolver focuses on climate change. Therefore both authors want their readers to understand that these threats are a reality that will damage the aesthetic and spiritual beauty of Southern Appalachia

IFRS regelverk bidrar till förståelse av redovisning gällande nedskrivningar samt de incitament företag har att påverka redovisningen. Empirisk grund: I uppsatsen studeras företag noterade på Stockholmsbörsens Small Cap, Mid Cap och Large Cap mellan åren 2010–2023. Resultat och slutsats: Studien finner inget signifikant samband mellan nedskrivningar och VD-byte. Slutsatsen blir således att svenska börsnoterade bolag inte utför big bath vid byte av verkställande direktör. Testerna har dock visat signifikanta samband mellan de olika nedskrivningsposterna samt totala tillgångar, avkastning på tillgångar samt skuldsättningsgrad. Theoretical approach: The hypotheses are formulated based on the big bath theory, agent theory and positive accounting theory. IFRS regulations contribute to the understanding of accounting regarding write-downs and the incentives companies must influence accounting. Empirical basis: The essay studies companies listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange's Small Cap, Mid Cap and Large Cap between the years 2010-2023. Results and conclusion: The study finds no significant relationship between write-downs and CEO changes. The conclusion is thus that Swedish listed companies do not carry out big baths when changing the managing director. However, the tests have shown significant relationships between the various write-downs and total assets, return on assets and leverage.
