    Implementation of Epidemic Restrictions to Disrupt the COVID-19 Pandemic in Iran: A Mini-Review

    The number of cases infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), which causes COVID-19, has been steadily rising globally. Iran, one of the countries with a relatively high number of positive cases, has an inevitable role to play in controlling the pandemic by implementing effective policies and countermeasures to interrupt the viral transmission chain. Epidemic restrictions implemented following an Iranian presidential mandate were especially effective following the Nowruz holidays—the solar New Year celebration in the Persian-speaking culture. These restrictions started flattening the incidence curve of the epidemic in Iran two weeks after implementation, from 10 April 2020. Supplying sufficient face masks, disinfectants, sanitizers, and medical equipment to all government-run and non-for-profit hospitals were included in the presidential mandate. The authors hypothesized that Helicobacter pylori infection can attract chemokines attributed with local inflammation which ends in tumor cells’ migration.     Roadmap to Stop the Predatory Journals: Author\'s Perspective

    Recent disgracing reports are warning the scientific communities to think more about the solutions to win the battle against predatory journals and publishers. Current integrity and accuracy in science is a result of decades of honest works and publications which are an asset, now everyone as stakeholders of science should feel the responsibility to sustain its high privileged level. The ethical sides of this duty need careful considerations by science stakeholders worldwide. Boosting the weak resume, getting higher and faster promotion and permanent jobs in academia cannot figure out as reasonable excuses to publish unethically. Hereby, I suggest a practical roadmap based on certain strategies which are recommendable for the scientific community. This paper describes author‘s perspective about predatory journals and how we can stop them. Moreover, following the appearance of the predatory journal, this is a first article discussing root cause analysis on this global scientific problem. Last but not least, predatory journals are not too bad! Since they can be considered as a critical discriminatory tool to distinguish between individuals who work truly standard and who pretend to work standard.&nbsp

    High correlation of babA2-positive strains of Helicobacter pylori with the presence of gastric cancer

    Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a Gram-negative bacterium that is well known in the involvement of chronic inflammation in the gastric mucosa of the human stomach. Several studies have investigated the possible role of H. pylori presence in different gastroduodenal disorders with conflicting results. This study aimed to further investigate such a field. Helicobacter pylori strains were cultured from 160 patients (mean age of 42 years; range 15–75; 90 were male, and 70 were female) [40 gastric cancer (GC), 55 duodenal ulcer (DU) and 65 non-ulcer dyspepsia (NUD)]. In this study, allelic variants of iceA1, iceA2 and babA2 were identified by polymerase chain reaction. The overall prevalence of babA2 gene was 40.6% (65/160). The prevalence of babA2 gene was 95% with gastric cancer, 18.1% with duodenal ulcer and 26.1% with non ulcer dyspepsia, respectively. The prevalence of babA2 in GC patients was significantly higher as compared to either NUD or UD patients (P = 0.0004), while no statistical significance was found between the latter two patient groups.     Why do we still have Helicobacter Pylori in our Stomachs?

    The existence of any infectious agent in a highly acidic human stomach is contentious, but the chance finding of Helicobacter pylori is by no means an accident. Once H. pylori colonises the gastric mucosa, it can persist for a lifetime, and it is intriguing why our immune system is able to tolerate its existence. Some conditions favour the persistence of H. pylori in the stomach, but other conditions oppose the colonisation of this bacterium. Populations with high and extremely low prevalence of H. pylori provide useful insights on the clinical outcomes that are associated with this type of infection. Adverse clinical outcomes including peptic ulcer disease and gastric cancer depend on a delicate balance between a harmless inflammation and a more severe kind of inflammation. Is the only good H. pylori really a dead H. pylori? The jury is still out

    Recognition of acute lymphoblastic leukemia cells in microscopic images using k-means clustering and support vector machine classifier

    Acute lymphoblastic leukemia is the most common form of pediatric cancer which is categorized into three L1, L2, and L3 and could be detected through screening of blood and bone marrow smears by pathologists. Due to being time-consuming and tediousness of the procedure, a computer-based system is acquired for convenient detection of Acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Microscopic images are acquired from blood and bone marrow smears of patients with Acute lymphoblastic leukemia and normal cases. After applying image preprocessing, cells nuclei are segmented by k-means algorithm. Then geometric and statistical features are extracted from nuclei and finally these cells are classified to cancerous and noncancerous cells by means of support vector machine classifier with 10-fold cross validation. These cells are also classified into their sub-types by multi-Support vector machine classifier. Classifier is evaluated by these parameters: Sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy which values for cancerous and noncancerous cells 98%, 95%, and 97%, respectively. These parameters are also used for evaluation of cell sub-types which values in mean 84.3%, 97.3%, and 95.6%, respectively. The results show that proposed algorithm could achieve an acceptable performance for the diagnosis of Acute lymphoblastic leukemia and its sub-types and can be used as an assistant diagnostic tool for pathologists

    This paper touches upon issues and trends in language transfer studies and reading research. Then, a brief report of three separate published papers by the author on the transfer of reading strategies from L1 to L2, L2 to L3 and L2 to L1 will be provided. In language transfer studies the idea is that languages affect each other. But, from where is it logical to lay the stepping stones of strategic reading if it is believed awareness of reading strategies transfer from one language to another in a multilingual mind? It seems it is logical and cost effective to improve strategic reading competence in L1 if it is shown that learners' skills and experiences in language learning are cross-linguistically linked together
