    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Amazônia em colapso: por um direito plural das águas

    O presente estudo analisa a crise hídrica na Amazônia sob uma perspectiva sociojurídica, com ênfase no direito à água, no pluralismo jurídico e no Novo Constitucionalismo Latino-Americano. A pesquisa delimita-se a examinar de que modo a governança plural da água pode contribuir para enfrentar o colapso ecológico e jurídico na região amazônica, reconhecendo os saberes indígenas e comunitários como elementos fundamentais para a construção de alternativas. Nesse contexto, formula-se a seguinte problema de pesquisa: diante da intensificação da crise climática e da perda de resiliência da floresta amazônica (Boulton; Lenton; Boers, 2022), como o direito pode responder à crise hídrica amazônica a partir de uma abordagem plural e descolonial, capaz de superar as limitações do modelo jurídico estatal e eurocêntrico? A partir dessa problemática, o objetivo geral consiste em analisar a crise hídrica na Amazônia à luz do direito à água, do pluralismo jurídico e do Novo Constitucionalismo Latino-Americano, identificando caminhos para uma governança participativa e descolonial das águas. Para alcançar tal finalidade, foram definidos objetivos específicos: compreender a água como bem comum e direito fundamental a partir da literatura crítica; examinar o pluralismo jurídico como marco teórico para a inclusão de múltiplas ordens normativas; investigar a contribuição do Novo Constitucionalismo Latino-Americano na valorização dos saberes indígenas e comunitários; e refletir sobre a necessidade de uma governança plural e participativa da água na Amazônia. Metodologicamente, trata-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa, de caráter exploratório, fundamentada em revisão bibliográfica interdisciplinar. São mobilizadas obras clássicas, como Hardin (1968), ao problematizar a “tragédia dos comuns”, e Sánchez-Castañeda (1988), ao propor a noção de um “direito vivo”. O estudo também dialoga com autores críticos latino-americanos, como Wolkmer (2001), Quijano (2000) e Boaventura de Sousa Santos (2010), que oferecem instrumentos para compreender a pluralidade normativa e a necessidade de superar a colonialidade do saber. Além disso, considera trabalhos recentes sobre a crise amazônica, como a tese de Nogueira Júnior (2023), que investiga o colapso do sistema jurídico na região, e a pesquisa de Boulton, Lenton e Boers (2022), publicada na Nature Climate Change, que demonstra a perda de resiliência do bioma amazônico. O método é descritivo-analítico, articulando teoria e prática jurídica, com ênfase em perspectivas decoloniais e pluralistas. Os resultados preliminares indicam que a concepção da água como direito humano fundamental (Silva Filho, 2019) e como micro bem ambiental (Carli, 2015) fortalece a crítica a modelos de gestão centralizada que privilegiam interesses econômicos em detrimento de direitos coletivos. Estudos climáticos confirmam a vulnerabilidade crescente da região amazônica, revelando que a degradação ambiental e o desmatamento comprometem o ciclo hidrológico e afetam diretamente as populações locais (Boulton; Lenton; Boers, 2022). Esse cenário exige uma resposta jurídica capaz de integrar múltiplas epistemologias e sistemas normativos. A questão da água como bem comum ganha destaque com a obra de Garrett Hardin, The Tragedy of the Commons (1968), que explora como o uso indiscriminado de recursos comuns pode levar à sua degradação. Segundo Hardin, esse problema surge tanto do crescimento populacional quanto da exploração desenfreada dos recursos naturais, resultando em duas formas principais de gestão: a centralização estatal ou a privatização. No entanto, tais abordagens muitas vezes desconsideram as particularidades das comunidades tradicionais, especialmente em regiões como a Amazônia, onde a água desempenha papel vital. Carli (2015) destaca a água como um micro bem ambiental; ecossistema ecológico, que interage com os demais ecossistemas; e bem essencial à sadia qualidade de vida. Estudos recentes, como o artigo publicado na Nature Climate Change (2022) intitulado Pronounced Loss of Amazon Rainforest Resilience Since the Early 2000s (BOULTON; LENTON; BOERS, 2022), apontam uma preocupante diminuição da capacidade de resiliência da floresta amazônica diante das mudanças climáticas e do desmatamento.  A governança da água no século XXI também enfrenta conflitos sociais e políticos. Castro (2016) analisa esses conflitos como resultantes da complexidade de variáveis envolvendo a disponibilidade de água e a disputa entre diferentes projetos de uso e acesso a esse recurso. Essas tensões tornam evidente a necessidade de um modelo de governança que não apenas reconheça a água como bem comum, mas que também seja sensível às especificidades culturais e socioambientais da Amazônia, permitindo que a gestão da água seja não apenas sustentável, mas também justa e inclusiva.   O pluralismo jurídico apresenta-se como alternativa teórica e prática. Para Wolkmer (2001), a coexistência de diferentes sistemas normativos amplia a autonomia e a diversidade, desafiando o monismo estatal e abrindo espaço para a legitimidade do direito indígena. No caso amazônico, Nogueira Júnior (2023) argumenta que o colapso do sistema jurídico está vinculado a fatores sociais, políticos e ambientais, e que apenas abordagens interdisciplinares podem efetivar a proteção ambiental e os direitos dos povos originários. A perspectiva descolonial, conforme proposta por autores como Aníbal Quijano, complementa essa visão ao promover uma pluralidade epistêmica que desafia a centralidade do pensamento eurocêntrico e valoriza os saberes locais. A descolonialidade, nesse contexto, apóia a construção de uma governança da água que respeite e integre as epistemologias indígenas, posicionando-as como fundamentais para enfrentar a crise hídrica na Amazônia e garantir a proteção dos recursos hídricos para as gerações futuras.   Nesse horizonte, o Novo Constitucionalismo Latino-Americano contribui de forma decisiva. Inspirado nas Epistemologias do Sul (Santos, 2010), ele rompe com paradigmas eurocêntricos e fortalece o reconhecimento da plurinacionalidade. As constituições do Equador (2008) e da Bolívia (2009) exemplificam esse movimento, ao reconhecer os direitos da natureza, legitimar a diversidade cultural e institucionalizar mecanismos de participação popular (Tapia, 2010; Parola, 2017). Esse modelo dialoga com a perspectiva descolonial de Quijano (2000), que enfatiza a necessidade de superar a colonialidade do saber e legitimar as epistemologias indígenas como centrais para a governança ambiental. Parola (2017) contribui ao explorar o conceito de "democracia ambiental", salientando a inclusão das epistemologias indígenas em decisões ambientais, elemento-chave do Novo Constitucionalismo. As constituições de Bolívia e Equador rompem com paradigmas ocidentais ao adotarem princípios ecocêntricos, como a proteção da Pachamama, promovendo uma governança sustentável e comunitária.  Martins e Dantas (2017), examina o Novo Constitucionalismo em Entre a Nação Imaginada e o Estado Plurinacional com enfoque no fortalecimento dos direitos indígenas, evidenciando a transição para um Estado plurinacional que legitima a autonomia e a jurisdição dos povos indígenas sobre seus territórios e práticas culturais.   Os achados preliminares permitem concluir que enfrentar a crise hídrica amazônica implica reconhecer a água como bem comum e adotar uma governança plural, capaz de articular direito estatal, direito indígena e normas comunitárias. Conclui-se que a crise hídrica amazônica ultrapassa a esfera de um problema meramente técnico, devendo ser compreendida como expressão de disputas históricas, políticas e epistêmicas. Seu enfrentamento requer o reconhecimento da água como direito fundamental e bem comum, a valorização do pluralismo jurídico e a incorporação das contribuições do Novo Constitucionalismo Latino-Americano. A formulação de um “direito plural das águas”, que articule o direito estatal às normas comunitárias e aos sistemas jurídicos indígenas, delineia-se como alternativa capaz de assegurar justiça socioambiental, dignidade e autodeterminação aos povos da Amazônia, ao mesmo tempo em que oferece caminhos de superação ao modelo jurídic

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
