Writing from the shadowlands: how cross-cultural literature negotiates the legacy of Edward Said
This thesis examines the impact of Edward Said's influential work Orientalism and its legacy in respect of contemporary reading and writing across cultures. It also questions the legitimacy of Said's retrospective stereotyping of early examples of cross-cultural representation in literature as uncompromisingly 'orientalist'.
It is well known that the release of Edward Said's Orientalism in 1978 was responsible for the rise of a range of cultural and critical theories from multiculturalism to postcolonialism. It was a study that not only polarized critics and forced scholars to re-examine orientalist archives, but persuaded creative writers to re-think their ethnographic positions when it came to the literary representations of cultures other than their own. Without detracting from the enormous impact of Said, this thesis isolates gaps and silences in Said that need correcting. Furthermore, there is an element of intransigence, an uncompromising refusal to fine-tune what is essentially a binary discourse of the West and its other in Said's work, that encourages the continued interrogation of power relations but which, because of its very boldness, paradoxically disallows the extent to which the conflict of cultures indeed produced new, hybrid social and cultural formations.
In an attempt to challenge the severity of Said's claim that 'every European, in what he could say about the Orient, was consequently a racist, an imperialist, and almost totally ethnocentric', the thesis examines a number of different discursive contexts in which such a presumption is challenged. Thus while the second chapter discusses the 'traditional' profession-based orientalism of nineteenth-century E. G. Browne, the third considers the anti-imperialism of colonial administrator Leonard Woolf. The fourth chapter provides a reflection on the difficulties of diasporic 'orientalism' through the works of Michael Ondaatje while chapter five demonstrates the effects of the dialogism used by Amitav Ghosh as a defence against 'orientalism'. The thesis concludes with an examination of contemporary writing by Andrea Levy that appositely illustrates the legacy of Said's influence.
While the restrictive parameters of Said's work make it difficult to mount a thorough-going critique of Said, this thesis shows that, indeed, it is within the restraints of these parameters and in the very discourse that Said employs that he traps himself. This study claims that even Said is susceptible to 'orientalist' criticism in that he is as much an 'orientalist' as those at whom he directs his polemic
SEM Study of Oil Adsorption on the Surface of Khaya Senegalensis Dried Leaves
AbstractUntreated produced water contains numerous substances that can cause harm to the environment such as dispersed and dissolved oil, heavy metals, and production chemicals. Dispersed oil content in produced water may vary with different oil wells. Dispersed oil in water is classified as toxicants to human beings and marine life. The focus of doing this research is to study the oil adsorption characteristics of dried Khaya Senegalensis leaves in produced water and to investigate the effect of temperature on oil adsorption efficiency of the dried leaves. Khaya Senegalensis dried leaves were chosen for the research because they are considered as natural waste that exist in abundance in the environment. The results from SEM analysis showed that adsorbed oil patches appeared on the surface of the leaves. This is due to the leaves’ rich phytochemical constituents which is lipophilic in nature. However, an increase in temperature of the solution will result in the decrease in the number of adsorbed oil patches on the surface of the leaves. This is due to the leaching of these phytochemical constituents into the surrounding solution which reduces oil adsorption efficiency of the dried leaves

The online learning readiness: technological skill readiness and gender impact / Salasiah M Said, Nor Famiza Tarsik and Raja Alwi Raja Omar
Since the early year 2020, the world has been shocked by the COVID-19 outbreak. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought the world to a standstill, entire cities have been locked down, and people have been restricted to their homes to stop or slow the spread of this disease (Rafique, Mahmood, Warraich, & Rehman, 2021). This outbreak has affected people's daily routines. It is included social, career, economics, education, and so on. In terms of education, the minister had announced the different phases and methods to be adopted while academic institutions were closed. Most universities have transformed their way of teaching and learning environment. One of the teachings and learning methods is Open and Distance Learning (ODL). It was supported by Rafique, Mahmood, Warraich, and Rehman (2021) which stated that Corona Virus Disease or COVID-19 has changed the way of teaching and learning process. They explained that online learning provides a computer-mediating environment for sharing one’s perspective with others confidently and comfortably. If both instructors and students connected virtually during the teaching and learning process, it can be assumed as an example of online learning. Nowadays, many media or platforms can be used by instructors or students such as social media. This was supported by Min-Ling, Chien, Chao-Hsiu, and Zang-Yuan (2010) who stated that an online course environment provides communication tools to facilitate interpersonal communication among teachers and students. Readiness is defined as being prepared mentally or physically for some experience or action (So & Swotman, 2006). It requires people to accept any form of teaching-learning method. Other than that, readiness is also defined as students’ perception in delivery, self-confidence in using e-communication channels, and students' autonomy in learning participation (Yuk, et al., 2021). In addition, the Chapnick Readiness Model (2000) was used as the theoretical framework in the study Coopasami, Knight, and Pete (2017). This model groups different factors into eight readiness categories which are psychological readiness, sociological readiness, environmental readiness, human resource readiness, financial readiness, technological skill readiness, equipment readiness, and content readiness. However, this study only focuses on technological skill readiness among students

Perception of sexual harassment at the workplace / Marfinny Mohamad and Azianna Alwi
Sexual harassment today becomes more serious. During the previous year, it is known by the society that only woman is being sexually harassed. However, nowadays in this modern world, the victim of sexual harassment is also among the man. In this research, the researchers were focusing on the sexual harassment at the workplace. The relationship of man and woman at the workplace can be beyond the rule. There are several reasons why the victims are refused to make a report to the superior. The common reason is that they are afraid of losing their job if they bring up the matter to the top level management. Other than that, the management might not easily believe on what they said and it will affect their reputation as a worker. Moreover, the victims feel ashamed of themselves because they are being sexually harassed. Men are less reported as victim of sexual harassment at the workplace because they are masculine. From the men’s point of view, reporting the matter will lead others to misjudge them as it will give bad impression to others as well. Besides, they may be afraid that others might questioned about their sexual orientation assuming that the man is homosexual or have a bit ‘different’ taste. Injury from the sexual harassment at the workplace is often extreme, including humiliation, loss of dignity, psychological injury, and can decrease the performance their career. Sometimes, they face a choice between their jobs and their own safety
