Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
O ensino de paleontologia à distância em instituições de ensino superior privadas no Brasil
No full textThe objective of this article is to reflect on the problems involved in distance learning of the subject of Paleontology, from the theoretical understandings and formative experiences of the author himself. Thus, it was problematized: would it be possible that the distance learning of the curricular unit of Paleontology, of undergraduate courses, in the way that this subject is currently being organized and offered by private educational institutions, could negatively influence the learning of the discipline and the training of future teachers and researchers in the area? The author considers that greater attention by educators and researchers in the field of Geosciences and Biology teaching is urgent and necessary in the face of the "epidemic" of expansion of the offer of the subject of Paleontology, through distance education, in the way that this has occurred in private HEIs in Brazil, and proposes solutions to mitigate the problems presented.Objetiva-se refletir sobre as problemáticas envolvidas no ensino à distância da disciplina de Paleontologia, a partir das compreensões teóricas e experiências formativas do próprio autor. Assim, problematizou-se: seria possível o ensino à distância da unidade curricular de Paleontologia, de cursos de graduação, na forma como atualmente esta disciplina está sendo organizada e ofertada por instituições de ensino privadas, influenciar negativamente o aprendizado da disciplina e a formação de futuros professores e pesquisadores da área? JURASSIC WORLD ACAMPAMENTO JURÁSSICO: UMA SÉRIE ANIMADA COMO FERRAMENTA DE ENSINO DA PALEOGENÔMICA
Get PDFGiven the significant influence of pop culture conveyed through traditional, digital, and streaming media on the lives of Young people, this study investigated an audiovisual production in the cartoon genre, aimed at the adolescent audience. This research presents a qualitative approach and use of the documentary analysis technique based on an audiovisual document represented by a single episode of the first season of the animated series Jurassic Word: Camp Cretaceous, broadcast by Netflix, with the aim of identifying paleogenomic knowledge conveyed in scenes that serve as a reference for the construction of updated paleontological knowledge. Based on the analysis, it was possible to conclude that the film production analyzed is the only current animated science fiction series that addresses themes related to Paleogenomics, and is therefore useful to be used in high school classrooms as a pedagogical tool to engage and motivate debates that promote the construction of biogeoscientific knowledge basedon a culture familiar to the student.Considerando la influencia de la cultura pop transmitida en medios tradicionales, digitales y de streaming en la vida de los jóvenes, este studio investigó una producción audiovisual del género de animación dirigida al publico adolescente. Esta investigación adopta un enfoque cualitativo y utiliza la técnica del análisis documental basada en un documento audiovisual representado por un único episodio de la primera temporada de la serie de animación Jurassic Word: Campamento Cretácico, transmitida por Netflix, con el objetivo de identificar sabers paleogenómicos transmitidos en escenas que sirvan de referencia para la construcción de conocimiento paleontológico actualizado. Basándose en los análisis, fue possible concluir que la producción cinematográfica analizada es la única serie animada de ciencia ficción actual que aborda temas relacionados a la paleogenómica, por lo que es útil para ser utilizada en entornos de clase de educación secundaria como herramienta pedagógica para involucrar y motivar debates que promuevan la construcción de conocimiento geocientífico basado en una cultura familiar para el alumno.Considerando a influência da cultura pop veiculada em mídias tradicionais, digitais e de streaming na vida dos jovens, este estudo investigou uma produção audiovisual do gênero animação voltada para o público adolescente. Esta pesquisa apresenta uma abordagem qualitativa e uso da técnica de análise documental com base em documento audiovisual representado por um único episódio da primeira temporada da série animada Jurassic Word: Acampamento Jurássico, transmitida pela Netflix, com o objetivo de identificar saberes paleogenômicos veiculados em cenas que sirvam de referência para a construção de conhecimento paleontológico atualizado. Characteristics of traffic accidents from 2005 to 2008 with run over victims in Maringa, Parana, Brazil
No full textThis is a retrospective descriptive study, which aimed
at knowing the characteristics of traffic accidents by motor vehicles
in Maringá between 2005 and 2008. For the study, run over victims
of traffic accidents in Maringá from 2005 to 2008 were considered,
using data from the firefighter’s list of occurrences - 5th Fire Combat
Team. 1841 victims were identified. From the total number of victims,
the number of incidents recorded (1486) was studied: 399 happened in
2005, 376 in 2006, 361 in 2007 and 350 in 2008. It was noted a decreas-ing trend in incidence over the years. A predominance of male victims
in the age range 15 to 24 was noticed. In the years of the study, the ac-cidents occurred mostly between May and July, early in the afternoon
and evening (6pm to 8:59pm). These results confirm those observed in
other studies, highlighting the need to implement preventive measures
through intersectoral action and contribution of other studies using
other methods and other information sources
