Duran Sanpere and M. Schwab (despite the fact that the latter author had passed away in 1918!), discussing a list of books that had belonged to Jews in Cervera. The names of these books had been brought to light from a few documents dating back to the 15th century. Even though the texts that were transcribed and discussed in that article lacked any archival reference which might allow them to be tracked down, after persistent research in the Cervera archives we have succeeded in finding some of these texts again, which are appended to the present paper (numbers 1, 5, and 7) together with a few other 15th-century documents also dealing with books that were a part of the cultural heritage of the Jewish people of Cervera. Since knowledge of the books owned by Catalan Jews in the Middle Ages has is of undeniable cultural importance, we thought it would be proper to offer a transcription (in some cases only of the relevant passages) of the seven texts known to us, preceded by a few remarks about the works mentioned in these documents. The documents involved (dated between 1422 and 1484) are an estate inventory. a will, an acknowledgement of the payment of a debt, a summons, and the delivery of a bequest. It is worth pointing out that some Christians appear alongside the Jews as witness in these documents and that the Bible, as in many other Jewish documents in mediaeval Catalonia, is called Magdesia [< Miqda-Yah] in document number 5

QUAND L HOMME DEVIENT BÊTE : L'ANIMAL AU SERVICE D'UNE IDEOLOGIE DANS MAQUIS DE CERVERA

    No full text
International audienceIn 1997, the Spanish author Alfons Cervera publishes Maquis to give the floor to those that the History forgot, those who continued the fight against Franco while the Civil War was officially ended. The author offers a poignant, often crude and rough story on the fratricide fight which goes on between both sides. The confrontation quickly raises the question of the place of the humanity while the animality progresses as the war of resistance gets stuck. Analyzing the various ways of loss of humanity organized around three axes that are the animality, the madness and the bestiality, we want to show how the subtle demarcation between bestiality and animality allows to question the apparent ecuminicism of a novel where each part would assume its part of inhumanity.

    No full text
peer reviewedIn this chapter, Manuel Cervera-Marzal proposes to analyze one of the most obvious expressions of this relationship to the policy expressed at Nuit Debout: the rejection of all forms of leadership and the continuous affirmation of an attachment to horizontality. Nuit Debout was built around an ambition often stated in General Assembly or commissions: to give life, here and now, to a true, direct and horizontal democracy. Neither the media, in the frenetic search for a leader and "good customers", nor the iron law of the oligarchy expertly brandished by the commentators, nor the delegated reflexes interiorized for years have yielded the movement in his mistrust of the leaders. The author examines the costs incurred by this refusal, the difficulties encountered to remain faithful to this principle and the mechanisms that allowed media figures not to be imposed on citizens, firmly committed to the preservation of the (simple) word of profane citizenship

La "Historia de Cataluña" de Rafael de Cervera

Bernat Desclot finished writing his Chronicle at the end of the 13th century, but it was not published until 1616, in a Spanish translation written by the Barcelona historian and politician Rafael Cervera. The reasons for this late publication and the peculiarities of the historical moment, that was influenced by the tensions between Catalonia and Spain which then led to the War of the Segadors, have not been studied in depth yet until now. By means of this thesis we try to place the translation, significantly entitled Historia de Cataluña, within the rich and fruitful Catalan tradition of historiography. Specifically, the translation is most clearly in the Barcelona tradition of historiography which in the course of the decades 1620-1630 was responsible for rescuing from oblivion the great figures of the old Catalan empire, with clear praiseworthy intentions. We have included a critical edition of the translation, the first one that has ever been produced, as well as an appendix with complementary information about the author, his work and the Early modern period of Catalan historiography.
