Fare esperienza di accoglienza nella scuola dell'infanzia

    No full text

Methotrexate and psoriasis: serum levels of aminoterminal propeptide of type III procollagen in long-term therapy

Aim. Long-term methotrexate (MTX) treatment can cause hepatic damage that may lead to the development of fibrosis or cirrhosis. The most reliable means of revealing such damage is liver biopsy, but it has been suggested that the scrum levels of the aminoterminal propeptide of type III procollagen (PIIINP) can be used for the non-invasive diagnosis and monitoring of fibrotic disease. The aim of this study was to monitor MTX-induced hepatotoxicity by means of serum PIIINP determinations. Methods. We studied 26 patients with psoriasis (17 with extensive plaque psoriasis, 3 with pustular psioriasis, 1 with psoriatic erythroderma, and 5 with plaque psoriasis unresponsive to treatment) being treated with MTX, the majority of whom had been treated for a long time. The mean cumulative dose was 609.73 mg, and the mean duration of treatment 11.82 months. Serum PIIINP levels were also measured in 2 control groups: 9 psoriatic patients without liver disease who had never received any systemic therapy for psoriasis, and 9 psoriatic patients with liver fibrosis and/or cirrhosis. Results. The serum PIIINP levels of 3 patients were above the reference range of 1.7-4.2 μg/L, whereas 23 (88.5%) had normal levels: mean PIIINP: 2.9 μg/L; range 1.66-4.55 μg/L). None of the 9 psoriatic patients who had never taken MTX had high PIIINP levels (mean 2.27 μg/L; range 1.48-3.20 μg/L), whereas all of the controls with fibrosis or cirrhosis had above-normal levels (mean 8.1279 μg/L; range 7.07-9.39 μg/L). Conclusion. PIIINP can be used as a reliable indicator of hepatic fibrogenesis. The number of liver biopsies of MTX-treated psoriatic patients with normal PIIINP levels can probably be reduced. An annual PIIINP assay is recommended after patients have received a cumulative MTX dose of 750 mg

Optically active polymethacrylates with side-chain L-lactic acid residues connected to push-pull azobenzene chromophores

Novel optically active methacrylic homopolymers with side-chain l-lactic acid moieties interposed through ester bonds between the main chain and trans-4-azobenzene chromophores bearing in the 4′-position electron withdrawing groups, such as the cyano and nitro residues, have been synthesized and structurally characterized. Investigation by circular dichroism of the chiroptical and conformational properties of the polymers in solution indicates a much higher optical activity of these latter with respect to that of the corresponding low molecular weight model compounds, purposely prepared, due to the presence of dissymmetric conformations of one prevailing handedness. The trans to cis photoisomerization kinetics of the azoaromatic double bond has been measured in solution for polymers and models and the resulting data compared with those of previously reported similar photochromic derivatives. The influence of the nature of the electron withdrawing group in the 4′-position of the azobenzene chromophore on the chiroptical properties of the polymers is also discussed

We laconically describe the great contributions of Professor Francesco Altomare to mathematical research and PhD education, and his unique status in the mathematical community. In particular, we present and give examples of his innovative and great achievements related to the following areas of mathematics: Functional Analysis, Operator Theory, Potential Theory, Approximation Theory, Probability Theory, Function Spaces, Choquet's Theory, Dirichlet's Problem and Semigroup Theory. Moreover, we report on and give concrete examples of his unique way to work together with PhD students, both before and sometimes also after their dissertation. Finally, we shortly describe his remarkable “class travel” from “simple” conditions with no academic traditions in his family in the small hometown Giovinazzo to finally become the broad, ingenious, and powerful mathematician he is regarded to be today

Photoresponsive properties of optically active (meth)acrylic homopolymers with pendant L-lactic acid or L-alanine residues connected to 4-amino-azobenzene

The photochromic behaviour and photoisomerization kinetics of optically active homopolymers of trans-(S)-4-N-(2-methacryloyloxypropanoyl)aminoazobenzene and trans-(S)-4-N-(2-acryloyloxypropanoyl)aminoazobenzene were studied by u.v. spectroscopy under irradiation at 366 nm. The resulting data are compared with those obtained for the corresponding low molecular weight structural models trans-(S)-4-N-(2-pivaloyloxypropanoyl)aminoazobenzene and trans-(S)-4-N-(2-isobutyroyloxypropanoyl)aminoazobenzene. The photoresponsive behaviour of the above polymeric systems was also investigated by circular dichroism measurements at various extents of photoisomerization. The results are discussed in terms of the structural requirements of the macromolecules

Section 33 is a sleeping giant within the Charter: now mostly quiet and unthreatening but, if awakened by increased and unnoticed or unopposed use, still capable of significantly changing Canada’s constitutional and legislative landscape”. Così si esprime la costituzionalista Barbara Billingsley in riferimento alla section 33 della Carta canadese dei diritti e delle libertà, meglio nota come notwithstanding clause o override clause

On a sequence of integral operators on weighted Lp spaces

Continuing some investigations started in previous papers, we introduce and study a sequence of multidimensional positive integral operators which generalize the Gauss-Weierstrass operators. We show that this sequence is an approximation process in some classes of weighted L^p spaces on R^N. Estimates of the rate of convergence are also obtained

Plant Tissues as 3D Natural Scaffolds for Adipose, Bone and Tendon Tissue Regeneration

Decellularized tissues are a valid alternative as tissue engineering scaffolds, thanks to the three-dimensional structure that mimics native tissues to be regenerated and the biomimetic microenvironment for cells and tissues growth. Despite decellularized animal tissues have long been used, plant tissue decellularized scaffolds might overcome availability issues, high costs and ethical concerns related to the use of animal sources. The wide range of features covered by different plants offers a unique opportunity for the development of tissue-specific scaffolds, depending on the morphological, physical and mechanical peculiarities of each plant. Herein, three different plant tissues (i.e., apple, carrot, and celery) were decellularized and, according to their peculiar properties (i.e., porosity, mechanical properties), addressed to regeneration of adipose tissue, bone tissue and tendons, respectively. Decellularized apple, carrot and celery maintained their porous structure, with pores ranging from 70 to 420 μm, depending on the plant source, and were stable in PBS at 37°C up to 7 weeks. Different mechanical properties (i.e., Eapple = 4 kPa, Ecarrot = 43 kPa, Ecelery = 590 kPa) were measured and no indirect cytotoxic effects were demonstrated in vitro after plants decellularization. After coating with poly-L-lysine, apples supported 3T3-L1 preadipocytes adhesion, proliferation and adipogenic differentiation; carrots supported MC3T3-E1 pre-osteoblasts adhesion, proliferation and osteogenic differentiation; celery supported L929 cells adhesion, proliferation and guided anisotropic cells orientation. The versatile features of decellularized plant tissues and their potential for the regeneration of different tissues are proved in this work
