Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Darkness Subverted : Aboriginal Gothic in Black Australian Literature and Film
At the heart of the Gothic novel proper lies the discursive binary of »self« and »other«, which in colonial literature was quickly filled with representations of the colonial master and his indigenous subject. Contemporary black Australian artists have usurped this colonial Gothic discourse, torn it to pieces, and finally transformed it into an Aboriginal Gothic.This study first develops the theoretical concept of an Aboriginal Gothic and then uses this term as a tool to analyse novels by Vivienne Cleven, Mudrooroo, Kim Scott, Sam Watson, and Alexis Wright as well as films directed by Beck Cole and Tracey Moffatt. It centres on the question of how a genuinely European mode, the Gothic, can be permeated and thus digested by elements of indigenous Australian culture in order to portray the current situation of Aboriginal Australians and to celebrate a recovered cultural identity.Der dem klassischen Schauerroman zugrunde liegende Diskurs von »Selbst« und »Anderem« wurde schnell auf die Gegebenheiten der kolonialen Situation angewandt und auf das Verhältnis zwischen Kolonialherr und kolonialem Subjekt projiziert. Zeitgenössische schwarzaustralische Künstler nehmen sich dieses kolonialen Schauerdiskurses an, reißen ihn durch ihre scharfe Perspektive in Stücke und transformieren ihn schließlich zu einem Diskurs des »Aboriginal Gothic«.Die vorliegende Studie erarbeitet die theoretischen Grundlagen des »Aboriginal Gothic« und benutzt den so konkretisierten Begriff, um Romane von Vivienne Cleven, Mudrooroo, Kim Scott, Sam Watson und Alexis Wright sowie Filme von Beck Cole und Tracey Moffatt zu analysieren. Im Zentrum der Untersuchung steht dabei die Frage, inwieweit der traditionell europäische Schauerdiskurs mit Elementen indigener australischer Kultur durch- bzw. zersetzt ist, um die aktuelle Situation australischer Aborigines darzustellen und eine wiedererlangte kulturelle Identität zu beschreiben
Forgotten Voices: The Female ANZAC and Male National Identity
This essay analyses in how far modern, female-centred, Australian productions in the wake of the 2015 centenary of the Gallipoli landing in WWI deal with the legacy of this landing and the ANZAC myth. It starts with an examination of what the ANZAC legend has become in contemporary Australia and its status as a cultural memory based on male ideals. The second part is devoted to a close reading of two examples which take as their focus the stories of Australian nurses in WWI, ANZAC Girls and Through These Lines. With the help of these examples, the essay shows that modern productions are highly indebted to the post-memory of Peter Weir’s Gallipoli instead of to original accounts and that those which take a female- centred focus do not challenge the male ideal promoted in Gallipoli but rather strive to be included in the very same context

In this essay, I am analysing James Bradley’s 2020 novel Ghost Species for its generic make-up and the ways in which this interacts with questions of gender. As I will argue, Ghost Species is a multi-genre mix of science fiction, climate fiction, domestic novel, and coming-of-age story and thus combines realist with speculative fiction. It defies classic genre conventions because of its female focalizers and their representation within the scientific community and society more generally. As a result, a newclear family is constructed, with the NeaHuman and her coming of age in the centre. By bringing together the different genres and their gendered presumptions, Ghost Species challenges traditional ideas of mothers as caretakers as well as of the coming of age as a female
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
