No full textRaduan Nassar is a reader of Almeida Faria, as revealed by the Portuguese author in the preface to the Brazilian edition of A Paixão, published by CosacNaify, in 2014. The same tension between the sacred and the profane that we read in A Paixão, by Almeida Faria, can also be found in Lavoura arcaica, by Raduan Nassar. Family relationships, in both narratives, exude passions, wills. The religious order within the constitution of the two families that have been archaically educated corresponds, in both works, to the obedience they dedicate to their two patriarchs: either to the pure patriarch of Lavoura arcaica, or to the profligate from A Paixão. The patriarchy paradigm maintains control of the primary powers in both families. Parents position themselves stands as moral authorities and control the attitudes of their families. Desire and will reproduce the orders of the patriarchs among family members; to reorder them would be to establish a struggle for emancipation among the oppressed, a movement that transformed Lavoura arcaica into a tragic novel, as we show in this article.Raduan Nassar é leitor de Almeida Faria, conforme revelação do autor português no prefácio da edição brasileira de A Paixão, pela CosacNaify, em 2014. A mesma tensão entre o sagrado e o profano que lemos em A Paixão, de Almeida Faria, também localizamos em Lavoura arcaica, de Raduan Nassar. As relações familiares, nas duas narrativas, exalam paixões, vontades. O ordenamento religioso no interior da constituição das duas famílias educadas com o arcaico corresponde, nas duas obras, à obediência que elas dedicam aos seus dois patriarcas; quer ao puro patriarca de Lavoura arcaica, quer ao devasso de A Paixão. O paradigma do patriarcado mantém o controle dos poderes primários nas duas famílias. Os pais postam-se como autoridades morais e controlam as atitudes das suas famílias. Join us for a lecture by Issam Nassar on the history of Palestinian photography. Nassar is a historian of the Modern Middle East and of Photography at Illinois State University. His work focuses on the modern Middle East and the history of photography. He is the co-editor of Jerusalem Quarterly and the author and editor of a number of books, including the editor of I Would Have Smiled: Photographing the Palestinian Refugee Experience (Institute for Palestinian Studies, 2009) with Rashā Salṭī, and The Story of Jerusalem (Olive Branch Press, 2013).
Murat Yildiz, Assistant Professor of History at Skidmore College, will introduce Nassar and moderate a discussion following the talk.
This talk is part of exhibition This Place, on view February 3 through April 22, 2018, as well the Palestinian Voices series. The Palestinian Voices series is organized and co-sponsored by the John B. No full textNo romance “Lavoura Arcaica” (2004), Raduan Nassar desenvolve uma relação harmoniosa entre literatura e mito. O mito aparece na forma de releitura original da parábola bíblica do filho pródigo. Entretanto, o autor vai além e inverte a parábola bíblica por três vezes. Em nosso estudo, pretendemos enfocar essa inversão, bem como o retorno do mito na ficção brasileira contemporânea e sua associação com a poesia.
Abstract
In “Ancient Tillage” novel (2004), Raduan Nassar develops a harmonization between literature and myth. The myth appears in the original rereading form of the biblical parable of the prodigal son. However, the author goes further and inverts the biblical parable three times. In our study, we intend to focus this inversion, as well as the return of the myth in the Brazilian word and its association with poetry
The Larry Nassar Nightmare: Athletic Organizational Failures to Address Sexual Assault Allegations, and a Call for Corrective Action
No full textabstract: This paper will discuss how USA Gymnastics (USAG), Michigan State University (MSU), and the United States Olympic Committee (MSU) failed to properly investigate and take corrective action of former physician and now convicted serial pedophile, Larry Nassar. This includes a description of the powerful individuals who worked with or oversaw Nassar, how they received complaints of his sexual assault, and an explanation of the institutional environment that fostered a culture of silence and obedience. To provide a comparative analysis, this paper will analyze other athletic organizations (such as USA Swimming and USA Diving) which are also overseen by the USOC in order to compare their previous cases and reactions to sexual assault. This will be followed by recommended corrective policies for athletic organizations if claims of sexual assault arise. These policies and procedures will aim to prevent sexual assault in the future, reduce any culture of silence and vulnerability within similar organizations, and hopefully be implemented throughout athletic organizations everywhere

No full textTrabalho de conclusão de curso (graduação)—Universidade de Brasília, Instituto de Letras, Departamento de Teoria Literária e Literaturas, Licenciatura em Letras - Português, Monografia em Literatura, 2014.Entender como se dá a relação entre memória e autor implica conhecer o que de fato é o autor, como ele mesmo se constrói e se desconstrói na sua própria escritura perante sua responsabilidade para o sentido e significação de sua obra. Tendo como corpo dessa análise a obra de Raduan Nassar, Lavoura arcaica, busco a singularidade do autor expressa no texto, a seleção da memória que o construiu, sejam elas reais ou ficcionais. Há, na obra, um processo constante de outrar-se entre autor e personagem para transmitir a memória, a reflexão de um momento, a lembrança traduzida na escrita. O personagem toma posse da memória do autor para que se construa uma obra onde palavras possam representar memórias a partir de uma realidade ficcional contígua à realidade do mundo real. O distanciamento do eu-próprio como autor para a aproximação do eu-outro como personagem e o contrário, devem ser constantes para que, dessa forma, autor e personagem constituam uma só memória. O entrelaçamento entre Nassar e o personagem André é necessário para compor a escritura da obra, para a perda da identidade original, proporcionando uma completa fusão de corpos – autor, personagem – a fim de dar imortalidade a uma memória através da escritura.Understanding how the relationship between memory and the author entails knowing what in fact is the author, as he constructs and deconstructs himself on its own writing before his responsibility for its direction and meaning. Having Raduan Nassar’s Lavoura arcaica as the body of work for this analysis, I seek the uniqueness of the author expressed in the text, the selection of memory that built it, whether they are real or fictional. There is, in this work, a constant process of the author and the character putting themselves in the other’s shoes to transmit the memory, the reflection of a moment, a memory translated into writing. The character takes possession of the author’s memory to build a composition where words can represent memories from a fictional reality contiguous to the reality of the real world. The distance of I-own as an author for the approaching I-other as the character, and vice versa, must be constant so, in this way, author and character can constitute a single memory. The intertwining of Nassar with the character André is necessary to compose the writing of the work, for the loss of the original identity, making it possible a complete fusion of bodies – author, character – for immortality to be given to a memory, through the writing

No full textNeste trabalho, apresentamos os resultados de uma pesquisa que aproxima a teoria semiótica e a literatura. Tal estudo consistiu na análise de um texto literário: o conto Menina a caminho, de autoria do escritor brasileiro contemporâneo Raduan Nassar. Para compreendermos o processo de construção de sentidos engendrado no referido texto, ancoramo-nos na teoria semiótica de linha francesa, ou greimasiana. Por meio do instrumental oferecido por essa teoria, pudemos compreender os mecanismos e efeitos de sentido articulados pelo enunciador do conto que, dentre outros fatores, são os responsáveis pela elevada qualidade estético-literária de seu texto.In this dissertation, we present the results of a research that approaches the semiotic theory and literature. The study chooses as its subject the short-story Menina a caminho, from the Brazilian contemporary author Raduan Nassar. In order to make explicit the building of the text meaning, we have as approach the French semiotic theory. Through the tools offered by this theory, we can understand the means and meaning effects produced by the short-story enunciator that are responsible for the high aesthetic and literary quality of his text

A REBELIÃO PELO JOGO O PERCURSO DA ALEGORIA EM LAVOURA ARCAICA DE RADUAN NASSAR
No full textO objetivo deste trabalho é propor uma leitura de Lavoura
arcaica de Raduan Nassar pautada pelo reconhecimento de
suas tensões formais e ideológicas, bem como pelo contexto
social e cultural em que a obra se engendra. Levando em
conta o caráter de exceção da prosa nassariana no cenário
da literatura da década de 70, preferimos partir de uma
leitura pautada pelas coordenadas estéticas do neobarroco -
uma forte tendência artística latino-americana , cujo
apogeu é contemporâneo do romance em questão. Tomando o
partido de autores como Lezama Lima, Severo Sarduy, Alejo
Carpentier e Irlemar Chiampi acreditamos em uma possível
leitura barroca do romance, utilizando o conceito
benjaminiano de alegoria à título de ilustração e
aprofundamento interpretativo do mesmo. Nosso primeiro
passo é apresentar a problemática neobarroca para em seguida
debruçar-se sobre a obra propriamente dita, invertendo
(barrocamente) a divisão bipolar do livro - partida e
retorno- de modo a salientar o caráter espelhado da análise
literária.The purpose of this thesis is to propose a reading of
Raduan Nassar`s Lavoura Arcaica which recognizes its formal
and ideological tensions, as well as its social and
cultural context. Considering the exceptional character of
Nassar`s prose in the literary scenario of the seventies,
we have chosen to place this reading within a neo-baroque
aesthetic theory - a very strong Latin American artistic
tendency, whose climax is contemporaneous to the author`s
literary work. Following the line of such authors as
Lezama Lima, Severo Sarduy, Alejo Carpentier and Irlemar
Chiampi we believe a baroque reading of the fiction is
possible. To illustrate the interpretation we have used
Benjamin`s concept of allegory. Our first step has been to
introduce the neo-baroque problem. Next we analyze the
work per se (baroquely) inverting the bipolar division in
the book - depart and return - in order to highlight the
double character of the literary analysis
