This work is an experimental and numerical study of aqueous foam flow inside a horizontal square duct, with and without flow disruption devices (fdd). It is especially devoted to determine the pertinent parameters of the flow: longitudinal pressure losses, velocity fields of foam flow near the walls, liquid film thickness (thick and thin), and the wall shear stress evolution, for an aqueous foam with a void fraction range between 55 and 85%, for a mean foam flow velocity of 2, 4 and 6 cm/s. Once they were determined, inside the horizontal channel, we carried out measurements over different geometries: half-sudden expansion, vertical fence and foam flow around a cylinder. The goal was to study the foam flow reorganization to well understand the rheological behavior of aqueous foam flow in the vicinities of different fdd. Finally, a numerical simulation (CFD), using the Bingham behavior model of non-Newtonian fluid, was undertaken to test its capacity to represent the aqueous foam flow inside the horizontal duct with flow disruption devices. First of all, we verified the static longitudinal pressure evolution, which varies linearly upstream and downstream far from the fdd. The singular pressure loss remains constant for a given mean foam velocity and a foam quality (void fraction). From the Particle Imaging Velocimetry (PIV) technique (2D), we determined the two velocity components in the immediate vicinities of the disruption devices. They allowed us to put into evidence the different foam flow regimes and to observe the foam flow reorganization and rheological behavior through the studied fdd. The slip-layer thickness analysis, obtained using the conductimetry method, shows that the wall presents a liquid film thick enough to apply an electrochemical technique (polarography). Thus, the polarographic signals, obtained for the foam flow, present important fluctuations. They were compared to the wall shear stress deducted from the measurement of pressure losses, showing a good similarity between them. The numerical study (CFD), carried out for aqueous foam flow with a void fraction of 70% and a mean foam flow velocity of 2 cm/s, shows that the Bingham rheological model can be adapted to this kind of aqueous foam flow which is flowing like a block

Current research focuses on the fabrication of the dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) based on titanium dioxide (TiO2) compact layer deposited by the spray pyrolysis deposition (SPD) technique. TiO2 compact layers have been grown on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) glass substrates by the experimental aerosol-assisted SPD setup. This setup is designed and constructed for the research under the following conditions: substrate temperature of 300 °C, 400 °C, and 500 °C; initial solution concentration of Ti (IV) isopropoxide and ethanol of 0.5 ml and 100 ml, respectively; carrier gas pressure of 0.1 bar; nozzle-to-substrate distance of 20–30 cm; and spraying time of 5–10 s. The characterization instruments such as HITACHI (S-2700) scanning electron microscopy (SEM), BRUKER (D500) X-ray diffractometer (XRD), and JENWAY 7310 UV-Vis spectrophotometer have been used to investigate the film properties. Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) were assembled based on a bare FTO glass, FTO coated with TiO2 compact layer and with conventional TiCl4-treated film. The current density (JSC) and overall energy conversion efficiency of the device have been improved from 11.31 to 12.8 mA/cm2 and from 3.8% to 6.4%, respectively. However, the dye-sensitized solar cell based on TiCl4-treated film presented the best results with efficiency of 7.35% and current density of 13.08 mA/cm2.</p

The need for evermore growing production capacity while maintaining low maintenance costs and high product quality has been and remains one of the main aims of every industrial. This is apparent in the funded research areas in the last two centuries which focused on multiple topics dealing with extending the product functionality and the overall cost reduction. One of the greatest opportunities for cost reduction is the preemptive maintenance of equipment in the production line. This includes a wide range of machinery with different working conditions and installments along with different kinds of strains. Material strain and failure caused by the wear damage is one of the most known and researched phenomena in this area. It is responsible for reducing the lifespan of numerous installments and thus being a safety hazard in many production lines. It is in this area of interest that this work explores the possibility of improving the resistance to the wear damage caused by solid particle impingement in rotatory machinery. In this work a new method for the aero-dynamical design of centrifugal compressors is presented. This new method is based not only on the performance map of the compressor but also takes the wear damage in form of erosion via solid particle impingement into account in the design phase. Wear has been classically treated after its appearance in the equipment, but in this thesis, it is shown how the treatment of wear in form of erosion can also be preemptive and occur in the early phase of compressor design. The study of literature on the subject of erosion leads to the inevitable necessity of differentiating in the complexity of the way of occurrence and its nature. Erosion for example has its consequence on the material but has its cause in the particle impact which is conveyed by a stream in form of a carrier fluid. Instead of treating the damaged material, in this thesis the stream carrying the particles responsible for the erosion is subject to study by means of numerical simulations on different field cases. Beginning with the numerical discretization of the particle trajectory components in different frames of reference to evaluate the relation of the trajectory to the specific geometry of rotating machinery and going through coupled CFD-Erosion simulations applying available erosion models in the literature to discuss and assess the damage inflicted in order to reevaluate and modify the design. The erosion models used in this work are assessed based on their applicability on the scope of focus and on their ease in the implementation and use in the simulation environment. The application of numerous aero-dynamical optimizations to the blade construct and geometry based on the observations made thanks to the study of the carrier fluid and the numerical assessment of the particle trajectory, the effects on the overall flow in the vicinity of the impeller are evaluated at each instance and resulted in the improved method for the compressor’s design. The particle trajectory is treated in phases: The phase of the first impact is of particular interest as it conveys the maximum impact damage through the particle incident energy conferred through the carrier fluid. The control of the first impact location contributed greatly to the reduction of erosion damage. This method is applied successfully on a numerical model of a centrifugal compressor and led to a 77% reduction of erosion damage on the rotor’s blades and thus considerably increasing the lifespan of this equipment.

In the framework of railway aerodynamics, one of the major problems concerns the development of ecological solutions for cooling roof equipment requiring the least maintenance as possible. One of the potential way of improvement relies on forced convection cooling based on the movement of external fluid through the equipment when the train moves. This requires the knowledge of the dynamic behavior of the flow. These heating elements are generally positioned close to each other for reasons of space, giving rise to a succession of deep cavities with non-flush edges. Unfortunately, this type of cavity flow is almost not studied in the literature although it has strong variations compared to the “symmetrical” cases. Cavity flows also generate instationnarities associated with complex separation phenomena that can generate various types of noises, such as acoustic noise or structural vibrations. In the perspective of flow control in the aim to cool some areas called “thermally dead”, we are interested into the flow dynamics at the vicinity of the cavities with asymmetric edges, and then address the phenomenon of hydrodynamic oscillation potentially induced, with a particular attention to asymmetric cases. This study made it possible to highlight the persistence of modes for asymmetric cases and also to propose an adaptation of the Rossiter model to asymmetric deep cavity flows

Thermal stress modeling of solid oxide fuel cell stacks based on multiphysics numerical method

Mechanical failure and performance degradation found in solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) are often related to higher thermal stress generated in operating procedures. In this chapter, various numerical studies in this topic are summarized and outlined in terms of modeling and simulation methods. As a case study, a multiphysical coupled model is applied and presented aiming to explore and analyze the thermal stress distribution and the stack operating parameters effects (e.g., the gas composition, current, and temperature distribution). The effects of the stack design parameters are also investigated for different flow channels (i.e., coflow and counter-flow), electrolyte layer thickness, manifold position, etc. This chapter provides a valuable reference in evaluating the thermal behavior and effects on the electrochemical cells/stacks.</p

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

To improve the aerodynamic performance particularly in the field of transport (aerospace, automotive, ..), the flow control is a promising solution for rupture. It presents at the same time a major stake for industry and a challenge for the scientists. The fallout aimed by control (particularly active control) are of an at the same time economic (reduction of consumption) and environmental (decrease of greenhouse gases). The objective of this work is the development, validation and implementation of this type of actuator. We thus designed an actuator of the synthetic jet type based on a loudspeaker. The performances of this actuator were estimated in a quiescent environment. Both hot wire anemometer and the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) are used. The effects of different parameters were analyzed (frequency, amplitude forcing, ...). Particular attention has been devoted to the study of the inclination of the ejection slot. Three angles were used (30 °, 45 ° and 90 °). In each case the development of synthetic jet and the vortices have been characterized. By the same techniques of measurement in a wind tunnel, we have studied the interaction of the synthetic jet with a transverse flow.
