Be to, kalnas žymimas XX a. pradžios vokiškuose žemėlapiuose, kuriuose vadinamas Blocks Berg. [...]The article describes an archaeological site, Raudžiai (Nemunija) hillfort. Although Investigators Johan Michael Guise, Eduard Gisevius, Jonas Basanavičius, and Hans Crome have written about it and the hillfort is marked on maps, the hillfort has so far remained almost unknown among Lithuanian and foreign scientists. In 2011, it was discovered again by the present author, historian and archaeologist Valdemaras Šimėnas. The hillfort is in Kaliningrad Oblast (Russian Federation). The bulk of the hill has long belonged to the village of Raudžiai (Ger. Raudschen, Rus. Рядино (Ryadino)). It is also right beside small estate of Nemunija (Nemonje) (Nemansky District (Rus. The hillfort’s coordinates at the centre of the enclosure are N 55°02‘57.0“ E 22°13‘16.4“. The hillfort was erected on a massive, oval hill on the right bank of the Šešupė (Ger. Scheschuppe or Ostfluss, Rus. Шешупе), about 1.5 km from its confluence with the Nemunas. The hillfort’s defensive constructions are very complex and massive. It is surrounded by two banks and has an upper enclosure and a bowlshaped lower enclosure. The hillfort is a total of about 250 m long and about 150 m wide. An attempt has been made to connect the hillfort with 13th–14th century written sources. In fact, the idea that this location should be identified with the Scalvian castle Sassowia, Sassow, which was attacked by the Teutonic Knights circa 1276 should be assessed cautiously. There is a greater likelihood that in 1360 the Teutonic Knights erected short-lived Skalva (Czalwen) castle at this site

This research analyses the migration from the lands of the Baltic tribes conquered by Teutonic Order to the Lithuanian State in 13th-14th centuries. While the Teutonic Order was conquering Prussians and other Baltic tribes, local residents began to migrate into other neighbouring lands; most often their choice was the Lithuanian State. In 1283, as a response to the crusaders’ aggression, the Lithuanian State’s military forces took up arms and began their own crusades to the conquered lands of Baltic tribes. Oftentimes the residents of those lands were rescued. This research will, therefore, analyse the Baltic migration, which lasted for over 100 years, from the historical, archaeological, and linguistic viewpoints. Based on the latter methodologies, not once has any research been conducted about the Prussians’ and other Baltic tribes’ migration to the Lithuanian State’s territory. Since Prussia was the first territory among the Baltic tribes overpowered by the Teutonic Order, this research will first focus on the Prussians’ relocation to the Lithuanian State. The proof of their settlement in the Lithuanian State is based upon the vast variety of places with Prussian names, which can still be found today, as well as Prussian surnames (e.g. those that begin with the root Bart-). Thus, the study of the places with Prussian titles will help us see the spread of the locations where Prussians were settling the most. Having conquered Prussians’ lands, the crusaders continued expanding their reign to other Baltic tribes’ territories. Just as in the case of Prussians, historical resources also provide evidence of the Skalvians’ and Nadruvians’ migration. In addition, based on both archaeological and linguistic data, we find sufficient proof of Skalvians’ migration, and the places they inhabited. Archaeological data supports the historicity of the Skalvians’ settlements in the Lithuanian State, which by now have most likely vanished from the face of the map. Until the constant war between the Teutonic Order and the Lithuanian State had started, the crusaders attempted to overtake the remaining Baltic land – Yotvingia-Sudovia. The inhabitants of this land retreated voluntarily, and we can refer to them exclusively as refugees. The historical data provides sufficient information about the dukes of Yotvingia-Sudovia, and their retreat to the Lithuanian State. It is believed that the dukes might have brought with them a vast amount of tribesmen, which might explain a lot of locations the names of which begin with the root Dain- and Jatv-. The research contributes greatly to the historicity of the Baltic tribes’ migration to the Lithuanian State in 13th-14th centuries. Having analysed the data of various sources, it has become clear that Baltic tribes’ migration to the Lithuanian State during the aforementioned centuries was a common event, the confirmation of which can be still found until this day.Istorijos katedra / Department of HistoryHumanitarinių mokslų fakultetas / Faculty of HumanitiesVytauto Didžiojo universitetas / Vytautas Magnus Universit

The object of the present article is Kaltinėnai region which at the end of the fourteenth through early fifteenth century was one of the six or eight major territorial units of Žemaitija (Samogitia), i.e. Western Lithuania. The underlying aim of the article is to generalize the data from various sources concerning the Teutonic Order crusades against Kaltinėnai region in the late fourteenth century, to identify their accurate dates and circumstances of the said military campaigns. In addition, it attempts to identify the date when Kaltinėnai small town (Šilalė District) was first mentioned in sources as well as to discuss routes and duration of the Teutonic military campaign. The text is based on the known sources, which ‘have not been used to their full extent’: Wigand’s von Marburg Chronica nova Prutenica, Die livlandische Chronik by Hermann von Wartberge, descriptions of Teutonic war raids to Lithuania (die littauischen Wegeberichte) and others. It has been found that the statement well-established in encyclopaedias that Kaltinėnai ‘were mentioned in the thirteenth – fourteenth centuries in Teutonic chronicles’ is in fact incorrect. The place-name Kaltinėnai (Kalctene) was for the first time mentioned in the chronicle by Wigand von Marburg, in the description of the military campaign of the Teutonic Order against Samogitia. According to the data available from the chronicle by Hermann von Wartberge and other sources, the event in question should not be dated back to 1370 as it has been believed, but rather to 1371. That is the date when Kaltinėnai were first mentioned in written sources. The second Teutonic attack against Kaltinėnai region was launched in 1375. The chronicle by Wigand von Marburg contains some information about this raid, but it is highly likely that the crusade of the Teutonic Order against Vaikiai region described in the chronicle by Hermann von Wartberge and other chronicles is the same unsuccessful military operation. The raid of 1377 was characterized by its large scope and participation of Austrian knight Albrecht III in addition to other allies. The fourth known campaign was launched in 1398. It is quite plausible that the location of Nyntegeten was attacked during that particular campaign, though in the chronicle by Wigand von Marburg it is described as a different operation. In 1400 the Teutonic Order arranged one more large-scale military campaign where the Lithuanian army was involved as well. Descriptions of this raid in the Meco chronicle mention the location Caldee which almost definitely is Kaltinėnai. Twelve routes of military campaigns launched by the Teutonic Order in the late fourteenth century were directed to Kaltinėnai and neighbouring areas. Scouts suggested reaching this region mainly by four routes: through Bareikos, through Kūtymai, through Pūtvė or through Aukaimis. It would take 3–4 days for Teutonic knights to march from Ragainė or Klaipėda areas to Kaltinėnai region

The present text generalizes the data on the boiars (nobles) who lived in Kaltinėnai region i(valsčius – a local administrative unit) in late fourteenth – early fifteenth centuries. At first they are referred to in the treaty of 1390 between Žemaitija (Samogitia) and the Teutonic Order, then in the book of Marienburg treasurer for 1399–1409 and then in the list of the Samogitian delegation who handed a protest to arbiter Benediktas Makra in 1413. Some data can also be found in the donation deed issued by Grand duke vytautas in Kaunas in 1415 and in letters of the Order’s marshal sent in 1419. It was found that the above sources mention 30 nobles who resided in Kaltinėnai region, namely Činiūra, Daukša, Dirkintas, Eimundas, Gaudiktas, Gėlutis, Ginkus, Kaitenis, Kaitenis (homonym), Kantminas, Kęstautas, Knipas, Mažeikis, Meirė, Mingaila, Nausutis, Nigaila, Pokimas, Ragelis, Saviginas, Skučas, Skvaibutas, Spudutis, Tylenis, Tulys, Valačius, Visaginas, Vismilas, Vizbaras and Žygas. Comparative research of a more serious nature has not been conducted, but it seems that a number of boiars lived in Kaltinėnai regions if compared to other administrative units of Žemaitija. Several of them such as Jokūbas Mingaila, Petras Nigaila and Petras Vizbaras were close to the Grand duke and held various responsible positions. Meirė can be distinguished among other boiars referred to in the sources by his social position, and Visaginas (a person of a very special fate) died in exile to Prussia. An abundant stratum of boiars confirms and to some extent explains the significance of Kaltinėnai region in the internal political structure of Žemaitija in the period in question

Reikšminiai žodžiai: Medininkai; Vokiečių Ordinas (Teutonic Order; Kryžiuočių ordinas); Karai; Crusaders; WarThe object of the paper is the southern part (formerly a separate administrative unit of the Laukuva territory of the Medininkai land formed in the early 14th c ) . The study has been made in the aspect of historical geography. The main source of information was the descriptions of Crusaders' military roads to Lithuania, dating to the years 1384-1402. The study showed-that in the late 14th с the southern part of the Medininkai land (the former Laukuva territory) had been an important target of the Crusaders' feats of arms. The descriptions of their routes mention several rivers, castle sites, settlements of the Medininkai land. The summarized information contained in the Crusaders' Wegeberichts allowed to delineate the southern and southwestern boundaries of the Medininkai land

Medingėnų piliakalnio ieškota tikslingai, įsigilinus į XIII a. vidurio rašytinius šaltinius, pirmiausia į 1253 m. surašytą aktą, kuriuo Kuršo vyskupas Henrikas ir Vokiečių ordino didžiojo magistro atstovas Livonijoje Eberhardas fon Zainas (von Seyne) dalijosi planais nukariauti 5 pietines kuršių žemes, tarp jų ir Ceklį (Liv-, Esth- un Curländisches Urkundenbuch. Reval, 1853, Band I, S. 327–329, 249). Tai patvirtina XIII a. šaltinių patikimumą, anksčiau tyrinėtojų keltas hipotezes apie kuršių žemių struktūrą. [...]The 1253 act dividing the Curonian land of Ceklis mentions 44 locations, the majority of which coincide with known hillforts. The Medingė (Nedinge, Nederingen) locality (now Medingėnai, Rietavas Municipality) did not have a hillfort, which prompted a search for it in the vicinity of the church-owned village. On 8 April 2017, it was found on the left bank of the Minija, about 2.1 km to the NE of the centre of Medingėnai. An enclosure created on a 73x28 m promontory with a small stream was defended from the main land mass by a heavily ploughed, 50 cm high bank and a 50 cm deep ditch dug beyond it. The cultural layer in the enclosure has survived near the bank while the settlement at its foot was found in roughly 5 ha of the fields beside it. The hillfort dates to the 1st millennium-13th century

    Šiauduva XIV a. – XV a. pradžioje

This article explores the early history of Šiauduva, a small settlement, which is one of the oldest in the ethnic region of Samogitia. A small rural district (valsčius) of Samogitian eldership (seniūnija) of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania was also named after it. The circumstances under which Šiauduva arose near Laukuva, the older center of the area, are analysed. At the same time, the article addresses another important task – to determine the date of the first mention of Šiauduva in written sources. The settlement’s status in the 14th century and in the beginning of the 15th century and the formation of Šiauduva rural district are discussed as well. The research employed analysis and synthesis, comparative, geographical and retrogressive chronological methods. It showed that Šiauduva took over the role of the centre of the local area from Laukuva in the 14th century. Šiauduva was a centre of a small self-government unit in the end of the 14th century and in the beginning of the 15th century. It can be stated with very high probability that the act issued by the German Order in 1339 to a fugitive, Rusteika, includes Šiauduva’s first known mention in written historical sources.Šis straipsnis skiriamas ankstyvajai Šiauduvos istorijai. Jį rengiant taikyti analizės, sintezės, lyginamasis, geografinis ir retrogresyvinis chronologinis metodai. Tyrimo objektas nėra atsitiktinis, tai viena iš seniausių etninės Žemaitijos gyvenviečių, kurios vardu buvo vadinamas LDK Žemaičių seniūnijos administracinis padalinys – Šiauduvos valsčius. Straipsnyje nagrinėjamos gyvenvietės iškilimo šalia senesnio apylinkės centro – Laukuvos – aplinkybės. Kartu sprendžiamas svarbus lokalinei istorijai uždavinys – siekiama nustatyti pirmojo Šiauduvos paminėjimo rašytiniuose šaltiniuose datą. Taip pat aptariamas gyvenvietės statusas XIV a. – XV a. pradžioje. Svarbiausi tyrimo rezultatai pateikti išvadose, kuriose konstatuojama, kad XIV a. iš Laukuvos apylinkės centro vaidmenį XIV a. perėmė Šiauduva. Labai didelė tikimybė, kad ši gyvenvietė pirmą kartą minima Vokiečių ordino akte, išduotame 1339 m. bėgliui iš Lietuvos Rusteikai. XIV a. pabaigoje – XV a. pradžioje Šiauduva buvo nedidelio savivaldos vieneto – kraštelio (valsčiuko) – centras

Teutonic Order crusades against Kaltanėnai region

Kaltinėnų kraštas (valsčius) kryžiuočių taikiniu tapo XIV a. 8 dešimtmetyje - labai sunkiu Lietuvos valstybei laikotarpiu. Having breached the defensive system of Jūra in 1330 and later Nemunas in 1365, the German Order continued with more dangerous marches and attacked more remote eastern regions of the state, even the capital Vilnius. Germans already devastated almost all south-western Žemaitija – the major part of Karšuva and Kaltinėnai ended up next to the “front ” line marked with wooden gates. However, they were of little help. The place name Kaltinėnai (Kalctenė) was first mentioned in the chronicle by Wigand of Marburg, the description of the military campaign of the German Order to Žemaitija. The year 1371 is the date of the first mention of the name of Kaltinėnai in written sources. The second attack on Kaltinėnai region mentioned in the chronicle by Wigand of Marburg took place in 1375. The Order attacked the region in 1377 and 1389. In 1400, the German Order organised another large scale military campaign, which also involved Lithuanian armed forces. A total of 12 military campaigns of the German Order were targeted to Kaltinėnai and their environs. Scouts offered to invade the region from four directions: through Bareikas, through Kūtymai, through Pūtvė and through Aukaimis. Straipsnyje siekiama apibendrinti duomenis apie XIV a. pabaigoje - XV a. pradžioje Kaltinėnų krašte gyvenusius bajorus.
