A Critique of the Methodology on the Book The Human Body in Islamic Art Past Heritage and Post-Islamic Developments
No full textWhile the study of Islamic art is not very rich in the study of the human image, Eva Beer’s book "The Human Body in the Islamic Art of the Past Heritage and Post-Islamic Developments" is one of the only books in this field. In this book, the author examines the human image in the art of Arabs, Iranians, Gurkhas, and Ottomans. He has been a lecturer at the Museum of Islamic Art for many years and wrote the book in 2004. Although the author's efforts to collect research data are commendable, there are criticisms of the way research and methodological issues in the book are handled. Deficiencies in book methodology have led to the breakdown of communication between the book and the reader, despite the novelty of the research. The present article attempts to examine and explain the shortcomings of the methodology of the book and provide suggestions for their solution
Potential of soil amendments (Biochar and Gypsum) in increasing water use efficiency of Abelmoschus esculentus L. Moench
No full textWater being an essential component for plant growth and development, its scarcity poses serious threat to crops around the world. Climate changes and global warming are increasing the temperature of earth hence becoming an ultimate cause of water scarcity. It is need of the day to use potential soil amendments that could increase the plants resistance under such situations. Biochar and gypsum were used in the present study to improve the water use efficiency (WUE) and growth of Abelmoschus esculentus L. Moench (Ladys Finger). A 6 weeks experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions. Stress treatments were applied after 30 days of sowing. Plant height, leaf area, photosynthesis, transpiration rate (Tr), stomatal conductance and WUE were determined weekly under stressed [60% field capacity (F.C.)] and non-stressed (100% F.C.) conditions. Stomatal conductance and Tr decreased and reached near to zero in stressed plants. Stressed plants also showed resistance to water stress upto 5 weeks and gradually perished at sixth week. On the other hand, WUE improved in stressed plants containing biochar and gypsum as compared to untreated plants. Biochar alone is a better strategy to promote plant growth and WUE specifically of A. esculentus, compared to its application in combination with gypsum

Further, this research explores the issue of identity in the short story presented by the author. In the modern world, with the increase in immigrant numbers and the constitution of countries with different cultural diversities, identity issues arise. The researchers discuss the issue of identity in the postcolonial world and how the theorists viewed and presented their ideas about constructing identity in immigrants from these countries who suffered from facing the Diasporas and the dilemma of the difficulty of growing their identity. Furthermore, the paper investigates postcolonial novelists, especially in the novel "Dark They Were and Golden-Eyed ."As postcolonial theorists considered the issue of identity as one of its essential discussions, novelists also exposed the conditions of identity crises that emerged in the postcolonial period. Therefore, the method undertakes to apply postcolonial theories to the above novel, Dark They Were and Golden-Eyed. Different aspects and elements of Post Colonialism have been described in the research to explore the Post Colonialism presented in the novel, like ambivalence, racism, otherness, and hybridity

Admission criteria and academic performance in medical school.
No full textDifferent variables have been used to predict the academic performance of students in medical schools. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of demographics, admission system, and high-school background on the academic performance of medical students. We conducted this longitudinal cohort study on 808 students admitted to the Faculty of. Medicine at the University of Jordan (Amman, Jordan), in the years 2012 and 2013. Admission pathway, and academic performance data were collected and analyzed. A total of 808 students [i.e., 426 (52.7%) females, and 382(47.3%) males] were identified. Admitted students were holding 17 different types of high school degrees, and were accepted through 6 different quota pathways (open competition [National unified admission], underprivileged ["Makrumah"], parallel, children of university staff, international students, and others). Students admitted through the open competition and the underprivileged quota(Makrumah) were more likely to graduate on time and had higher graduation grades while students admitted through the parallel, international and others quota were more likely to fail and had lower graduation grades. Regarding highs school degrees, the students that were more likely to graduate were those with IB and the Jordanian high school degrees. The highest graduation GPA was for IB students followed by SAT, IGCSE as well as Jordanian and Syrian high school degrees respectively. IB, Jordanian, Kuwaiti and IGSC high school grades were significantly correlated with the graduation GPA. Admission criteria such as type of high school degree and grades as well as admission pathways can predict the likelihood to graduate and the graduation GPA of medical students. Open competition and underprivileged admission pathways as well as IB, IGCSE and Jordanian high school degrees seem to be better predictors of student performance in the medical school
Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) Order among Terminally Ill Patients with Cancer: A Position Statement
No full textEnd-of-life (EOL) care takes an important place in critical care settings. Of it, one of the most serious and arguable decision is the Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) order. The DNR is a legal order written by a licensed physician in consultation with the patients or their surrogate decision makers, in which the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is withhold at the time of cardiac or respiratory arrest. Many studies reported that many inpatient deaths had a DNR order. The purpose of this position statement paper is to present proponents and opponents’ viewpoints regarding the DNR orders for terminally ill patients with cancer. Proponents of the DNR order reported that it is a form of treatment that protects patients’ rights, and allows the terminally ill cancer patients to die peacefully without undergoing futile resuscitation attempts. Opponents of the DNR order are concerned with the protection and preservation of life of the terminally ill cancer patients. The current author is against the DNR order based on the patients’ right for sanctity of life, and the Islamic views of human life.
